In another part of a move to bolster promotion and awareness of their new album “No Line On The Horizon”, U2 will be performing as the music guests on Late Night with David Letterman every night for a full week March 2nd through March 6th. Their new album comes out that Tuesday, the 4th. This will be the first time ever any band/artist has performed on Letterman’s show for the entire week. This will also be U2’s first performance on the show since 2001.
Will this really work for them though? They opened the Grammys performing their single “Get On Your Boots”. They’ll be performing on the Brit Awards next week. In his latest newsletter, music industry “expert” Bob Lefsetz is already questioning the effect that this TV residency will have on U2.
“As for U2… Hate to tell them, their audience is fortysomething. The women watch “Today” and Ellen. Many are home with the kids, they’ve got the tube on in the background. As for their hubbies? They’re exhausted by 11:30, if they’ve still got jobs. And if they don’t, they can’t afford any U2 tickets/merchandise. The target audience is littered with kids, they’re not addicted to late night TV.”
Hate to say but he’s right. Someone I know recently had their artist on Carson Daly. He told me that being on there Daly doesn’t sell shit. “When he was on Ellen, the single skyrocketed on ITunes”.
