Jonah Smith has a new album coming out on August 18th called Lights On. What makes the release of this upcoming album (via Smith’s Voluptuary Records) so unique is that it was entirely fan funded. Smith left his previous label two years seeking the independence of creating an album without outside interference. “Not having to seek approval for my songs or my direction as an artist became too tempting for me. It was great to work with people who were so passionate about my music, but I needed to forge my own path. For me, it has become about creating a tribe and building a deeper connection with my audience.” For our loyal readers, we have a free mp3 download of the single “Love Gets Lost.” You can pull it down (legally!) here. Everyone’s been raving about the new Eels record “Hombre Lobo” lately. It’s pretty kick ass, even David Letterman thinks so! Hombre Lobo: 12 Songs of Desire, out on Vagrant Records, has been featured on NPR’s “Fresh Air” by reviewer Ken Tucker. Here’s he what he had to say about lead singer Mark Oliver Everett: “Whether he sings in a growl meant to be heard over loud guitars or a high-tenor croon with more gently-strummed instruments, E is a sensitive soul, unafraid to sound yearning.” The New York Times also named Hombre Lobo a “Critic’s Choice” and Huffington Post has described the record as “so sharply executed that it’s hard to compliment without outright fawning.” Check out the Eels on Kimmel tonight and buy it on iTunes here.

“Critic’s Choice”—The New York Times

“Moody rock music with rough edges and tuneful melodies.”—NPR “Weekend Edition”

“Vividly sketched, with the EELS delivering muddy roadhouse rockers. The ballads really shine.”—Rolling Stone

“Like much of E’s work, the album is complicated. It’s both sad and uplifting, dark and humorous, and always worth picking up.”—Associated Press

“Mark Oliver Everett takes his latest album title quite seriously, unleashing predatory howls over distortion-ridden stompers.”—SPIN

“Lean and timeless”
★★★★—MOJO

“There are few songwriters who could handle this material better than E—actually, perhaps there aren’t any.”
★★★★—The Sunday Times

“So sharply executed that it’s hard to compliment without outright fawning.”—Huffington Post

Steel Panther are not a gentle band. They won’t be singing about sunshine, candy and rainbows or making cartoon videos. Instead, the masters of excess have a NSFW video for their single “Community Property.” It’s outrageous, hilarious and awesome. Check it out below:

One of the common mistakes in this music industry is that bands just don’t pay any attention to their fans. Such is definitely not the case with Pop Evil. Not only are these guys some of the most congenial rockers to their fans, they let their fans choose their next single via an online widget. “Breathe” is the follow-up to Pop Evil’s smash hit “100 in a 55.” It’s harder than anything you’ve heard from Pop Evil before and you can hear it now on their MySpace at www.myspace.com/popevil and on their tour with Judas Priest. Check it out now!
