Sometimes the best way to deal with a break-up is to write a batch of great songs about it, turn up the amplifiers and just rock out. Relient K prove this with their new album Forget And Not Slow Down, out October 6th on their Mono vs. Stereo label. The band pushes boundaries, carrying the break-up album into the 21st century, tweaking it with clear-eyed songwriting and a four-to-the-floor optimism that is positively refreshing. As lead singer and songwriter Matt Thiessen sings on the rousing title track, “I’d rather forget and not slow down than gather regret for the things I can’t change now.”

Forget And Not Slow Down marks a major achievement for the band, who has been making the real thing since 1997, when Thiessen and Hoopes formed the band in high school. In the decade since, they’ve released five full-length albums (three are certified Gold), five EPs and a Christmas record, toured the globe, and more. The Los Angeles Times has praised Relient K for “its smart blend of punk pop and power pop, weaving together influences as diverse as the Beach Boys, Blink-182 and Fountains of Wayne” while Spin noted, “Few bands play punk-influenced modern rock as proficiently.”

With anticipation high from fans the world over and upcoming tour dates, the band’s hopes for Forget And Not Slow Down are simple. “The songs that tend to be the fan favorites in the past are the ones about making mistakes but ultimately moving past them,” guitarist Matt Hoopes says. “And this record has a lot of that feeling. No matter what trials you encounter in your life, it doesn’t have to be the end of your story. You can move on and be happy and experience joy.”

There’s an interesting article over at WSJ.com by Ethan Smith about how Ticketmaster tried to set up a deal with the biggest ticket scalpers/brokers, AEG Live and MSG Entertainment where they would control the secondary market for tickets and share the scalpers revenue with the artists and venues in order to thwart Live Nation’s entry into the ticketing market. These plans, of course, were in discussion prior to Ticketmaster and Live Nation merging earlier this year.

In the summer of 2007, then Frontline Entertainment CEO Irving Azoff (current head of Ticketmaster Entertainment) had arranged a meeting with the country’s six largest ticket brokers (Ace Ticket, Barry’s Tickets Service, Total Tickets, Gold Coast Tickets, Elite Ticket Service, Alliance Tickets) and several senior officials from AEG Live, MSG Entertainment (owns Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall). If the plan were carried out, Ticketmaster would’ve bought out the six brokers for up to $25 million each and the brokers’ execs would get seats on the board at the new company. Mr. Azoff and the other executives emphasized “how big it was going to be, how it was going to crush Live Nation,” recalls a person who attended. “We’d go forward and make lots and lots of money.”

There was even a trial run in the fall of 2007 where hundreds of the best seats 20 concerts by Van Halen (managed by Azoff) were pulled from Ticketmaster and given to the brokers being considered for acquisition to sell. The math would’ve worked out to the brokers keeping 30% of the marked up ticket price and the rest being divided between Ticketmaster, the band and “its handlers.” Van Halen allegedly made an extra million dollars from it. (Those bastards!). Anyways, according to the article, the reason why this all fell through is that no one trusted each other (no surprise). Check out the full article here

The best unreleased live concert, Nirvana at the Reading Festival in 1992, will finally be released on November 3rd. For those of you in your mid to late 20s like me, Nirvana was the band of your childhood.. unless you liked shitty pop music. If you really loved Nirvana, you not only had the In Utero poster and that smiley t-shirt but also bootlegs of the shows (2-22-94 Roma’s my favorite). Although it’ll be nice to have a higher quality official version of Nirvana at Reading, I’d much rather have official bootlegs of other Nirvana concerts like the Roseland show in July of 93 or at Maxwells. Anyways, here’s the official press release below.

“Nirvana headlining at Reading in 1992 was something you had to see, and if you didn’t see it then it was something you pretended you saw.”

– Kerrang (October 2003)

“The staggering energy and intensity radiating from the stage never let up… Cobain’s ravaged pop songs coming off like some dream marriage of the Sex Pistols and the Beatles, borne on bracing waves of distorted guitar noise.”

– Rolling Stone (October 29, 1992)

Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine’s “100 Gigs That Shook The World” and voted as “Nirvana’s #1 Greatest Moment” by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana’s historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK’s Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock’n'roll. Now, fans will have an opportunity to own a pristine copy of that entire performance — color-corrected video from the original film with audio sourced from the original multi-track masters. Nirvana Live At Reading will be issued in a limited edition CD+DVD Deluxe Edition as well as DVD-only, CD-only configurations on November 3, 2009, followed by a 2 LP version on November 17, 2009.

While the show’s centerpiece was a performance of nearly the entire Nevermind tracklist, also noteworthy were early performances of three as yet unrecorded songs which wouldn’t be released until 2 years later on In Utero: “All Apologies,” “Dumb,” and in its first ever public performance, “tourette’s.” The career-spanning setlist also reached back to the band’s 1989 Sub Pop debut album, Bleach, for “Blew,” “About A Girl,” “School,” “Negative Creep” and first single “Love Buzz,” and even further back to the mid-’80s for “Spank Thru.” Other songs from the Reading set would appear in studio form on the Incesticide compilation later in the year: “Aneurysm,” “Been A Son” and “Sliver.” Additionally, the band played a pair of beloved covers by two bands that helped shape the formative Nirvana sound — “The Money Will Roll Right In” by Fang and “D-7″ by The Wipers.

Only 2 of the 25 performances on the DVD have ever been released before.

On Monday August 31st THE USED will rock the Twitter-sphere with the FIRST EVER 24-hour tweet-for-ticket album listening party for fans. The admission? ONE TWEET GETS YOU IN. Built by Culture Jam Labs and Warner Bros Records, the virtual listening party for Artwork, the new album from The Used, will give fans the chance to stream the entire album in exchange for one tweet on the release date. The listening party will be hosted exclusively on http://twitter.theused.net.

Fans can enter this exclusive album listening party by turning their social Twitter updates into digital currency – essentially purchasing a ticket to the event with one tweet by tweeting the suggested message “You can listen to the new @wearetheused album #Artwork today for 24 hours only at http://twitter.theused.net. ONE TWEET GETS YOU IN.”

Once inside the listening party, fans can stream Artwork in its entirety, see other fans participating in the listening party, and be some of the first to purchase the album on itunes, Rhapsody or TheUsed.net. As a special bonus, fans will also be able to stream two B-sides, “On The Cross” (Save Yourself Mix), and “In A Needle” along with the album.

Artwork is the fourth studio album from Reprise Records artists The Used. Early critical acclaim for the Matt Squire-produced Artwork has been effusive. Outburn (which the band currently graces the cover of) praised its “humbling ability to sound scrappy and raw while being perfectly polished and huge,” while Alternative Press states “The Used have delivered not only the definitive album of their career but arguably one of the best records you’ll hear in 2009. 4 ½ stars.”
