The Low Anthem announce headline tour, dates w/The Avett Brothers, playing Letterman 1/14

The Low Anthem LOFI4

Rhode Island trio The Low Anthem will embrace an exciting new decade by headlining their first North American tour in March and April and making their US television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman this Thursday, January 14th. They will also spend much of February supporting The Avett Brothers on the road.

2009 was a benchmark year for The Low Anthem: they toured for the larger part of it behind their Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, which was named Magnet’s #1 Album of 2009, UNCUT’s “Americana Album of the Year,” and Boston Music Awards’ “Album of the Year.” The record figured prominently on year-end lists in Paste, MOJO, Q Magazine, and Uncut. It was also a New York Times Critic’s Pick, and NPR’s Bob Boilen coined the song “Charlie Darwin” one of the best of the year. The nearly ceaseless tour included stints with Ray Lamontagne, Elvis Perkins, and Josh Ritter, as well as festival stops at Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Newport Folk, among others.

On a short break from the road, the band has been busy working on the follow-up to Charlie Darwin, holing up in an abandoned pasta sauce factory in Central Falls, RI. The band is no stranger to recording in unique spaces, having ferried 27+ instruments over to Block Island, RI in January 2008 for the recording of Darwin. You can follow their updates at the band’s website. On January 31st, The Low Anthem will also premiere their new weekly radio show on WOXY called the “Trala-Lala Radio Hour w/ The Low Anthem.” The show will be at 10am ET on Sundays, 8pm ET Mondays. They will keep up their radio streak with a performance on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” when they’ come through LA on tour.

In keeping with their forward momentum, Ben Knox Miller also recently collaborated on Anais Mitchell’s upcoming album, Hadestown, alongside Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Greg Brown. Ani DiFranco and the Haden Triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). The band’s gorgeous stop-motion video for “Charlie Darwin” was also premiered by Stereogum, whose write-up said, “If you’re unfamiliar with the group, fans of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes should take note. Fans of Low, too.”
