Shilpa Ray And Her Happy Hookers are excited for the coming release of their 7″ single “Venus Shaver”, available in mid-October 2010. The single and b-side “Natural Selection” serve as a precursor to their forthcoming full-length Teenage and Torture, set for release January 18th, 2011 on Knitting Factory Records, home of the recently resurgent Fela Kuti catalog. As a preview of the new material they are making “Venus Shaver” available for free download at the link below.
“Venus Shaver” provides a promising look at what lays in store for listeners anticipating the full-length’s release next year, living up to the effusive praise Shilpa Ray And The Happy Hookers have steadily amassed since their debut 2009 full-length A Fish Hook, An Open Eye. That album wrote The New Yorker, saw Shilpa Ray “further showcasing her seemingly indestructible vocal chords. She screams, growls, and snarls her way through the screeching muck of oil-stained garage rock and backwoods blues, cresting just above the waves of a sonic tumult that threatens to consume her minuscule frame. This tenuous command of a raucous sound makes for a volatile breed of rock and roll.”
In the coming months Shilpa Ray And Her Happy Hookers will be playing dates showcasing the new material found on Teenage and Torture, including performances at CMJ 2011.
September held many firsts for singer-songwriter Brendan James – his self-titled sophomore album debuted at number one on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart (it remains in the Billboard Hot 100), and this past weekend he made his national television debut performing single “The Fall” on the CBS segment Second Cup Cafe. Brendan’s song “Your Beating Heart” can also be heard at the end of this Tuesday’s episode of One Tree Hill.

Welsh rock trio The Joy Formidable announce the premier of their new video “I Don’t Want To See You Like This,” available today on the band’s website www.thejoyformidable.com. Fans will be able to pre-order a 7″ picture disc from the band’s site starting today, and both the digital version of the single and the 7″ will be available to purchase on October 12.
The video was shot in the Gower Peninsula of Wales, during the worst rains the area had seen in over a decade. “It’s rugged terrain to begin with, and in normal conditions it would be a difficult shoot,” says the band’s guitarist and singer, Ritzy Bryan. “But add the torrential rain and electrical storms — let’s just say we were tested in every possible way. But I’m so happy we did it there, because it’s where the song was written.” The band went to the Gower Peninsula earlier this year to do some recording. “I had been there when I was a child with my parents,” Bryan explains. “And returning evoked a flood of memories that inspired me to write the song.”
“I Don’t Want To See You Like This” was produced by the band and mixed by Rich Costey, known for his work with Muse, Foo Fighters, Weezer, and Glasvegas. The track will be included on the band’s debut album, The Big Roar, which will be released on Canvasback/Atlantic in early 2011.
The Joy Formidable begins their next North American tour starting November 3rd in Toronto, Ontario. Prior to this, the band will headline the Emerge NME Radar tour in September and October. Tour dates are listed below.
