While on tour in Norway this summer, playing in Them Crooked Vultures, Alain Johannes did an impromptu performance of “Endless Eyes,†the powerful opening track off his solo debut, Spark. Fortunately TCV/Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme (whose label Rekords Rekords released Johannes’ album) was on hand to film the moving performance. If you didn’t catch it when it premiered on Ultimate-Guitar, click HERE to watch the video. The footage was filmed next to the Hove Festival, where Johannes and Homme performed an hour later.
Sparkis an ode to Natasha Shneider, Johannes’ late wife and creative partner who passed away in 2008. From beginning to end, the albumshowcases the remarkable technical precision and versatility that has made Johannes such an in-demand guitar player. It also reveals him to be far more than a rock guitarist, with elements of classical, flamenco, and Indian music displayed throughout. Tying it all together is his ability to craft melodies ripe with nuance, which is what truly makes each of the eight tracks captivating and emotionally resonant.
Johannes will be heading out on tour next month in support of Fistful of Mercy (the new band featuring Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur, and George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison). Don’t miss your chance see him live!
