Essential Records’ two time GRAMMY-nominated hard rock outfit RED packs a potent sonic punch on its third project, Until We Have Faces, a record that leaps out of the speakers with a ferocity and complexity reflecting the band’s growth and intensity. The new album releases February 1, 2011.

From the opening seconds of “Feed The Machine” through the final, contemplative moments of “Hymn For The Missing,” the four-man unit of vocalist Michael Barnes, guitarist Anthony Armstrong, bassist Randy Armstrong and drummer Joe Rickard shows both maturity and abandon can coexist within the various dimensions of rock Red inhabits.

The new album’s overarching theme is a search for true identity, inspired by a number of sources, including author C.S. Lewis’ book of similar title, Till We Have Faces. The band itself is working through its own new identity – as a four-piece with the addition of drummer Rickard.

Until We Have Faces takes listeners down the path of recognizing the hollowness of life until finding their true identity (revealed on “Faceless”), the idea of creative destruction unveiled in the midst of new life (found on “Let It Burn”), and simultaneously presenting the positive energy found even “in a world so cold” (explored on the infectious, melodic ballad “Not Alone”).

Paired again with award-winning producer Rob Graves, Until We Have Faces features Red in its most musically intense place to date – “a combination of our first two records, but on steroids,” Michael Barnes notes – daring both Red and its fans to catapult into new rock territories.

The band’s first single, “Faceless” goes for adds at Rock formats on Dec. 31, continuing Red’s powerful presence at radio.

One of the bands we’re looking most forward to seeing live in 2011 is Dynamite Walls. Having dominated the San Diego rock scene for the past year, the alternative-indie rock band is ready to explode outside of the 619 area code. We had a chance to speak with Dynamite Walls’s frontman Tom Pritchard recently. Get to know him and the band better below:

Where does the band’s name Dynamite Walls come from?

The original bass player (Doug Evans) and I started writing music in a studio I built down in North Park (San Diego) in 2003. We sent off the songs to our friend at Epic, he chose a few for us to hone down. We dove in at that point, and formed a band around it. We needed a name, and Doug was a big Hayden fan. Dynamite Walls was a favorite song of his – we thought it had a nice sound to it, tho it seemed to have meaning that maybe was beyond us… and still is… plus it was better than the names I was coming up with

Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters recorded a song with the band on your album. How did that get set up? Any chance that your band will join Chris and The Foo Fighters on tour next year?
Our song “That Girl” had layers of guitars, I thought too many… Our A&R man thought it needed more, and I was perplexed. Our producer knew Chris, and of course I was definitely into meeting him and hearing his take on the song. He added a great touch to the song, and did it without over layering the song into guitarmageddon… Since then we have played with Chris at the Bro-Am and would love to do more with him or the Foo Fighters.

With the band being based out of San Diego, is it safe to assume that you guys surf?
Yes and No…. Alex, Eric, and I surf. Tho we rarely go out anymore. I live a block from the beach and just stare at it. Alex has been going out a lot lately, not sure why Im not, it has been good lately…

You had a deal with Epic a few years ago that fell through. Now, you’re signed to Universal Republic. What inspired you to keep going considering that not many bands get a second chance?
It is very true that it is rare to get a second chance.. Yeah was in the back of our heads but we remained true to the cause. Playing music is more than just a success/failure machine. Our lives center around playing out, seeing friends in different places, writing new material, getting better as a band etc. We figured we just had to write better songs and the opportunity would present itself…

The band’s been compared to a lot of famous artists from The Killers to INXS. Has anyone compared you to a band that you didn’t agree with or understand the comparison?
I would say both of those bands, though you saying that gave me the vapors….
There always has to be bands that have the same style, sound, energy and its always interesting to hear what people come up with. Probably the weirdest was that we sound like a modern day Rod Stewart – didnt get that one…

You recorded your album with Paul Fox. What was it like working with him?
Working with Paul Fox was great. He’s produced some great bands (10,000 Maniacs, XTC, Sugarcubes) and has a way of getting at the core of a song. His wife, Franne Golde, was instrumental in the process as well. She’s written songs that we all know, and is damn good at it. We were able to learn so much from them before we recorded the album that by the time we were in the studio, we were confident we had made something good…

Your songs are very rock radio friendly. Who are the band’s influences?
Our influences range as the guys all listen to different shit… I’d say as an entity our influences are.. ( in no particular order!)

Van Morrison
Peter Gabriel
The Strokes
Bob Dylan/Marley
Broken Social Scene
shit… cant think of all of them now!

Dynamite Walls’s major label debut on Universal Republic Records is due out in the spring of 2011. Go to dynamitewalls.com to listen to their single “Keep Spinning Around” and sign up for their mailing list for the latest news on the band.

“Gadhia and the rest of his dynamic and soul-searching band (guitarist Jacob Tilley, guitarist Eric Cannata, bassist Payam Doostzadeh and drummer Francois Comtois) find a way to get us lost in the late summer doldrums – tired of going to the pool or the pond every day and knowing that we don’t want what we’re doing/this leisure lifestyle of carefree excess to come to a close, but we’re also burnt out on it. We keep jumping into that water, but every splash makes us feel less and less.”

January 19 Providence, RI @ The Met

January 20 New York, NY @ Mercury Lounge

The band, originally from Newport Beach, CA, has recently hit the road with bands like Minus the Bear, Neon Trees, Marina and the Diamonds, and The Futureheads.
