OK Go will premiere their brand new single, “The Greatest Song I Ever Heard,” today on RollingStone.com
The GRAMMY®-winning band will perform the track on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Thursday, April 28th. OK Go wrote “The Greatest Song I Ever Heard” at the behest of Oscar-nominated director Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me). It serves as the theme song for Spurlock’s latest film, POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, a documentary that explores the world of product placement, marketing and advertising. Hailed as “ingenious and devilishly clever” by Entertainment Weekly, the Sony Pictures Classic release had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and opens in select cities on April 22nd. The paradoxical hook of the film is that it was fully financed through awkward product placements in the film itself, a process that the viewer watches from Spulock’s first pitch meetings all the way to the ads sardonically inserted into the narrative. OK Go appears in the movie, discussing the success they’ve had in funding corporate sponsors for their music videos as a means of financing their work in a post-major label world.
“It was such an incredible coup to get OK Go to create the theme song for the movie. They are the most innovative and original band working today and I was so lucky that they were on board from the very first preview cut I showed them,” says Morgan Spurlock. “I couldn’t have imagined a more poignant track in the film. It’s perfect. It really is The Greatest Song I Ever Heard.”
The commercial single of “The Greatest Song I Ever Heard” will be released tomorrow, April 5th, and will be available at http://amzn.to/h29f9E and http://bit.ly/TheGreatestSongIEverHeard. OK Go’s collaboration with Spurlock is the latest a series of innovative partnerships the band has forged. In the past year, they’ve teamed up with such companies as State Farm, Samsung, Flip Camera and Range Rover in order to finance an inventive series of embeddable videos based on songs from their latest album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, which was produced by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT) and debuted in the Top 40 of The Billboard 200.
The band’supcoming U.K. tour, which launches June 29th, will include two dates with The Flaming Lips: June 30th at The Eden Project in Cornwall and a sold-out show at Jodrell Bank in Manchester on July 2nd. OK Go will also be playing numerous festivals this summer. See below for itinerary.
OK Go will release a live album on June 21st on Paracadute, the independent label founded by the band last year. Entitled 180/365 – a reference to the number of shows the band played in 2010 – the collection will include 19 tracks recorded live on a multi-track system during their fall tour. Produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann, the CD will be the first ever to feature a “Tronpak” (http://www.tronpak.com) case, a unique and environmentally friendly packaging from Norway.
The video for “White Knuckles” has been tapped for the new nintendogsâ„¢ + cats game on the Nintendo 3DSâ„¢ system. Users who perform a system update get access to a special 3D version of the single-take music video, which features an assortment of rescue dogs (and one goat). The original version of the video has been viewed more than 9.3 million times on YouTube.
OK Go – comprising Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Dan Konopka and Andy Ross – is the most downloaded band ever. Their videos have won numerous honors, including a GRAMMY® for “Here It Goes Again” (a.k.a. “the treadmill video”), a Webby “Special Achievement Award” and two UK Video Music Awards for “This Too Shall Pass (Rube Goldberg Machine version).” The latter, is a Rube Goldberg machine created by OK Go and Syyn Labs engineers, it is the #1 Top Rated (All Time) music video on YouTube.
