CAKE ‘s “Mustache Man” contest kicks off today in support of Movember’s prostate cancer awareness movement. In celebration, the band is releasing an online postcard that allows fans to insert a photo of themselves into a template and send a special greeting to a friend or loved one. So far, 300 people and counting have signed up to join CAKE’s mustache-growing competition. The “Mustache Man” contest, named after CAKE’s song of the same name from their latest album, Showroom of Compassion, will be hosted in conjunction with Movember, a global charity event where men grow mustaches during the month of November. In the U.S., funds raised by Movember benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG, The Lance Armstrong Foundation. “Last year, Movember became a truly global movement,” said Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder of Movember. “Through the power of the moustache, almost half a million Movember participants raised $174 M, making us the largest non-government funder of prostate cancer research in the world. This success was made possible by the individual efforts of each supporter, and we are honored to have the members of CAKE on board to help us change the face of men’s health.” Lisa Potter, Director of Communications for Movember, adds, “with their ‘Mustache Man’ song, they will be the perfect ambassador of Movember and the mustache.”
CAKE has created their own Movember team and several band members, including Gabriel Nelson, Xan McCurdy and Paulo Baldi, will be joining in on the fun and growing mustaches alongside their fans. Additionally, CAKE is challenging their fans to compete against each other in the “Mustache Man” contest. Participants can submit photos of their mustaches in one of the following categories: “The Largest,” “The Most Nostalgic,” or “The Most Dangerous.” Submissions will be accepted through December 3, and the winners in each category will be chosen by the band and announced on December 6.
One grand prize winner will receive a pair of tickets to CAKE’s New Year’s Eve concert at The Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA, round trip airfare for two, hotel accommodations for two nights at an Atlanta hotel, special seating during the show, an on-stage introduction by the band, and a meet and greet with CAKE after the show.
CAKE frontman John McCrea says “It’s time for the mustache to become a force for positive change. For many years it was just the opposite, but life is so unpredictable.”
CAKE’s recent album, Showroom of Compassion, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 upon its release earlier this year. The album continues to receive acclaim with recent appearances on NPR’s “All Things Considered” as well as two appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and performances on Conan, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Lopez Tonight and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. In June, the band performed a show-stopping set on CBS Interactive Music Group’s popular concert webcast series, Live on Letterman, followed by a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
