OCEANIA is the forthcoming album by THE SMASHING PUMPKINS. Intended to recapture the album experience, all 13 songs on OCEANIA will be premiered simultaneously to fans, radio, press and the online world. Forgoing the standard industry launch, the group purposely planned no single or video to be released prior to the full album.

Starting now, Monday, June 11, OCEANIA will be streamed for free in its entirety for one week exclusively on the iTunes Store (http://www.itunes.com/). Fans will be able to pre-order the album all week leading up to the June 19 in-store date. OCEANIA was specially mastered to optimize digital sound quality for iTunes Store customers. The release comes via the band’s own Martha’s Music/EMI Label Services/Caroline Distribution. Listen to OCEANIA here: www.iTunes.com/SmashingPumpkins

Having his own label through EMI afforded PUMPKINS leader BILLY CORGAN the opportunity to try something different. It is a launch scenario that goes against industry standards by allowing the album to be heard as it was meant to be. The group’s release plan was in no way intended to slight radio stations, video channels, press or online outlets. Instead, it represents the artistic vision of a band who, says CORGAN, “was dead set on making an album where every song was just as valuable as any other, ignoring the typical claptrap you hear about needing a single. The only way to make the case that every song on Oceania is worth hearing is to put your heart into the sequence as a cohesive whole.”

OCEANIA was recorded at the group’s studio in Chicago with CORGAN’s bandmates: guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist/vocalist NICOLE FIORENTINO. The powerful 13-song collection (see track listing below) was produced by Corgan and Bjorn Thorsrud and mixed by David Bottrill (Muse, Tool, King Crimson, etc). Marking THE SMASHING PUMPKINS’ 7th studio record, it is “an album within an album,” part of their 44-song work-in-progress TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE.

“I’ve been adamant in stressing that as a group, first and foremost, we are here to make new music together,” says CORGAN. “I’m proud to say that on Oceania I feel we’ve cut our own path forward. Jeff, Mike, and Nicole have all made significant contributions to the tone and texture of Oceania, which is an album that is unlike any I’ve ever made. Yet at the same time I believe it upholds the same musical values I’ve always pushed for with The Pumpkins, be they progressive, emotional, epic, or restless.”

Here’s the OCEANIA track listing:

Quasar
Panopticon
The Celestials
Violet Rays
My Love is Winter
One Diamond, One Heart
Pinwheels
Oceania
Pale Horse
The Chimera
Glissandra
Inkless
Wildflower

Entertainment Weekly awarded Vows an “A,” Rolling Stone gave the album 3 ½ stars, saying “Vows gives R&B a wacky art-rock spin, with a cappella vocal chorales mutating into sumptuous funk pop,” and Glamour gushed, “Vows is at all times thrilling and theatrical, filled with wall-of-sound orchestration and nearly-schizoid arrangements, all kept afloat with ease by Kimbra’s elastic voice.”

Originating from Hamilton, New Zealand, Kimbra has been performing her jazz-inflected pop since she was 14. She worked on her debut album, Vows, for over three years, finally releasing it Australia in August 2011 to critical and chart success. Vows is certified platinum in Australia and New Zealand.

For the US edition of Vows, Kimbra recorded additional tracks in Los Angeles, CA with such producers and songwriters as Mike Elizondo and Greg Kurstin. The day before Against Me! supported The Cult at Terminal 5, singer Laura Jane Grace tweeted “Anyone thinking that the Terminal 5 show in NYC tomorrow might not be worth it I PROMISE that you are mistaken. Do not miss this show!” She wasn’t kidding.

For anyone living under a rock, in a recent issue of Rolling Stone, Laura (formerly Tom Gabel) revealed that she had been struggling with transgender dysphoria his entire life, and would now begin to embrace who she really was. I’m pleased to report that hormone therapy has not affected her singing in the slightest. The band delivered a 40 minute set filled with older material, while also playing several songs from their upcoming album. They kicked the night off with two new songs – ‘True Trans Soul Rebel’ and ‘Transgender Dysphoria Blues’ which the crowd loved.

Next up was an older song, ‘Don’t Lose Touch’, and from that point it was easy to spot which members of the audience came to see Against Me! and which came to see The Cult. Fans started to jump up and down, push towards the front, and at several points, small but energetic mosh pits broke out in the crowd. Standouts from their excellent last album White Crosses followed including the singles ‘I Was a Teenage Anarchist’ and ‘White Crosses’. A couple of other new songs popped up in the set respectively entitled ‘Dead Friends’ and ‘Black Me Out’.

‘Black Me Out’ in particular stood out among the new songs. It started off slow, with just a soft guitar and Laura’s vocals, before the entire band joined in amid lyrics about chopping rings off ‘fat fucking fingers’ and pissing on walls of houses. It was classic Against Me! in the best way possible.

Towards the end of the set however, is when the true highlight of the set revealed itself. Laura welcomed the legendary Joan Jett to the stage and together they performed a cover of The Replacement’s ‘Androgynous’. Additionally, ‘The Ocean’ got a rapturous applause when Laura sang the lyrics “If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman; my mother once told me she would have named me Laura”. Towards the end of their set, classics such as ‘Pints of Guinness Make You Strong’ and ‘Sink, Florida, Sink’ sparked waves of crowd surfers before the band thanked the crowd one last time and walked off stage.
