Family Of The Year @ Crash Mansion 10/20 CMJ

November 4, 2009 drainu182 1

Family Of The Year is an indie pop rock band out of Silverlake, California. They played opening night of CMJ at Crash Mansion on 10/20. The band has sort of a Mamas and the Papas feel to them. Frontwoman Vanessa Jeanne Long was enchanting and playful and the band was pretty solid. We would’ve caught more of their set if they hadn’t taken the stage over 45 minutes after their set time. Also regrettable, the MC who tried doing some …

Surfer Blood Santos Party House CMJ 10/20

October 31, 2009 drainu182 1

Going to a show at Santos Party House during CMJ is only worthwhile if you’re going to stay the whole night there or if you’re going to see something amazing. Since Santos isn’t near the real scene of shows (Arlene’s, Piano’s, Living Room, Crash Mansion), it’s annoying to head over there but we still made the trek out to catch Surfer Blood. We were “treated” to a twenty minute set of mumbled uninspired music. If you wanted to see a …

Lights Resolve Bowery Ballroom CMJ 10/20 Review/Photos

October 31, 2009 drainu182 0

Lights Resolve played the first night of CMJ at the Bowery Ballroom on 10/21. They were filling in for The Black And White Years from Austin (who couldn’t make the trip, sucks!). The lineup originally also had Hockey but you know how these CMJ shows change all the time. Anyways, despite being added on 12 hours before the show (we know this because we were reminded a few times by the band), Lights Resolve amazed the somewhat sparse crowd. Few …

Invade Rome @ Crash Mansion 10/20 CMJ Photos

October 29, 2009 drainu182 0

We officially kicked off CMJ by hitting up Crash Mansion last Tuesday to catch an indie rock band from Milwaukee called Invade Rome. Invade Rome kind of reminded us of Queens Of The Stone Age but not nearly as good. The music’s not quite hypnotizing but it’s experimental enough to keep you interested (especially if you’re high and no, we weren’t). Check out some photos below and go to more on the band.

Pete and J 10/22 Paste Magazine Party Living Room CMJ

October 27, 2009 drainu182 0

Paste Magazine has been sponsoring free day shows all week at the Living Room. On this day, they featured local indie rock band Pete and J. They remind us a little of Simon and Garfunkel but a little funnier. Enjoy the photos courtesy of Meimi Yeung.

Mumford & Sons 10/21 White Rabbit CMJ

October 26, 2009 drainu182 0

One of the best parts about CMJ are these pop-up/makeshift shows. Glassnote Records set up a pop-up performance for Mumford & Sons at the bar White Rabbit but it was in one of the lounge rooms, not in the bar area. These guys are amazingly good. We don’t like folk rock but we love Mumford & Sons. It’s rare that we like these types of love songs from England but we love this band. Check out a few photos …

Clare and The Reasons 10/20 Mercury Lounge CMJ

October 25, 2009 drainu182 0

It’s hard not to fall in love with Clare Manchon. She looks like a beautiful housewife who stepped away from cleaning to sing a few songs for everyone before going back to her chores. Perhaps it’s because she’s written most of the songs with her husband Olivier. Together (with the help of Bob Hart and Jon Cottle), they comprise the Brooklyn indie rock quartet Clare and The Reasons. They played Mercury Lounge with labelmate Josh Mease on …

Care Bears On Fire Bowery Ballroom CMJ 10/20

October 25, 2009 drainu182 0

Care Bears On Fire played the first night of CMJ at Bowery Ballroom. Though the girls have a lot of pop, there’s just not enough punch. I’m not sure if they’ll ever be taken seriously as a pop/punk/rock band or just as a kiddie band. I mean, they did make it onto Letterman recently. And they’re a hell of a lot better than Kittie ever was (Sorry Spiewak). Anyways, here’s a couple of photos below (thanks to Meimi Yeung).
