Sully Erna’s latest masterpiece, Avalon, was released today on Universal Records. The album features an array of eclectic compositions unlike anything he has ever written in the past, an epic body of work that has taken him over 2 years to compose, record and finally release, utilizing the hypnotic sounds of tribal rhythms, melodic pianos and cellos, and haunting vocals. Avalon also features the accompanying vocals of Lisa Guyer, as well as the hand percussion of Niall Gregory from renowned band Dead Can Dance. The first single off the record, “Sinner’s Prayer,” showcases his evolution in music and firmly defines his unique, new sound. Make sure to grab the album in stores everywhere or on iTunes now!

Sully is best known as the lead singer and main songwriter of the acclaimed rock band Godsmack, whose self-titled 1998 debut went quadruple-platinum, while five of the band’s albums and EPs have achieved gold or platinum status in the U.S. and Canada. Godsmack’s latest single, “Cryin’ Like a Bitch,” recently positioned itself at #1 for 9 weeks straight, and is the group’s sixth #1 track to land on Active Rock radio charts, as well as the band’s 18th Top 10 single overall — more than any other band in Active Rock history.

We had the chance to chat with Sully recently about his solo album. Check it out below and at the end, read on about how you can win the new CD Avalon signed by Sully!

Why after all these years did it seem like the proper time to release a solo album?
Sully Erna

What’s the meaning of the album title Avalon?
Sully Erna

There’s a little bit of a Middle Eastern feel on your solo album Avalon. Was there anything that you were listening to or reading that influenced the unique sound?

Sully Erna

Were there any new instruments that were difficult for you to learn for this new album?
Sully Erna

Do you think that the style of Avalon will work its way into future Godsmack albums?
Sully Erna

What was your band’s reaction to the news that you were making a solo album?
Sully Erna

Although this record is just coming out, Godsmack has a tour for this fall. Will you be playing an solo shows behind this album?
Sully Erna

It’s a shame you don’t have any immediate plans to perform your solo album live. It’d be really cool to see something so different from you.
Sully Erna

Beyond the scheduled fall tour dates, what are Godsmack’s future plans? Will you be heading back into the studio soon or stay out on the road next year?
Sully Erna

We know that you’re a big Alice in Chains fan. Which album of theirs is your favorite?

As a follow-up to 2008′s critically acclaimed debut The Day is Brave, singer-songwriter Brendan James has released his self-titled second album today. Recorded in James’ new hometown of Los Angeles (where he relocated permanently after seven years in New York City), the album is as layered in personality as the artist who made it. Brendan and producer Warren Huart (The Fray) added a number of musical textures to the album, but kept the focus on his expressive piano-playing and emotive lyrics. “My lyrical style is unmovable I’ve found,” he says. “I have tried to write a little more abstractly, but I just can’t. You are what you are and my heart is on my sleeve. I am a romantic as well as an optimist…I think my songs have this heaviness meets romance meets positivity.”

To experience Brendan for yourself, watch his music video for first single “The Fall” and a live performance of the track “The Lucky Ones,” which is featured in the trailer for the upcoming film How Do You Know. He is on tour now in support of the record – find tour dates and ticket information, as well as Brendan’s latest blog posts, at BrendanJames.com. The album is available now, in stores and on iTunes.

Pocket Vinyl is an aspiring piano-based rock band coming out of western New York. Centered around the unique piano slamming of Eric Stevenson, Pocket Vinyl has had a rotating cast of members over the years. Eric has been playing piano since he was a small child, curiously exploring the instrument from a young age. Starting in 2004, he found Pocket Vinyl and has spent hours upon hours in the studio with friends recording many hours worth of material. His craft has been fine tuned and continues to grow in fascinating directions. He’s been gathering influences from all over the place, taking hints from Ben Folds Five to Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes to Tom Waits. Whether Pocket Vinyl is a full band or a solo act, the stage is always filled with passionate yelps, miles of energy, and a man pressing his fingers down on a piano much harder than he probably should. Another very intriguing characteristic about Pocket Vinyl is their 2010 live show, which features a live on-stage artist, Elizabeth Jancewicz, creating a painting while the music is being played. The anticipated sophomore release “Protagonist” was released on June 15, 2010, and is sure to open the eyes of many to a fresh and unique sound in the musical landscape.

Legendary rock icons The Steve Miller Band have released have released a brand new studio album. A true return to Miller’s roots, BINGO! echoes his early years in the Chicago music scene and features carefully chosen and crafted tracks performed in distinctive Steve Miller Band fashion.

Co-produced by Steve Miller and engineer Andy Johns (Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix), BINGO! is the first of two albums recorded at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch. The sessions introduced new band member Sonny Charles, a veteran vocalist of the Checkmates, who will also be on the road this summer with Miller. These were the final sessions by harmonica player and vocalist Norton Buffalo, Miller’s “partner in harmony” for 33 years, who died of cancer in October 2009.

BINGO! is now available in 2 formats from both Amazon
and iTunes: a 10-track digipack CD and a special edition with 4 bonus tracks and expanded artwork. The album’s artwork is a creation of Storm Thorgerson whose album packages for Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd are the gold standard in artistic design. BINGO! is a fully realized mature work of a master craftsman, and in a sense, the album Steve Miller has been waiting to make all his life.

Rolling Stone – “Steve Miller returns to his blues roots and gives BINGO! the slick party-pop vibe of classic Miller like The Joker and Fly Like An Eagle.

In support of the band’s release, Steve Miller will be the featured guest on the nationally syndicated radio show ROCKLINE with host Bob Coburn on Wednesday June 16 at 8:30pm PT / 11:30pm ET. Want to get in on the action? Be sure to call to speak with Steve toll free at 1-800-344-ROCK (7625). We’re just starting a new feature over here on The Audio Perv called Unsigned Spotlight where we’ll try to let you know about an up and coming band or artist who’s ready to explode or they just make some really cool music. Today, we focus on Scarlet Grey. Learn about Scarlet Grey below:

Pieced together from the states of California, New York and Washington, pop-rockers Scarlet Grey now collectively hail from Los Angeles. Members Benjamin Grey (lead vocals/guitar), Keith Cooper (drums/vocals/production), Pete Emperador (bass/vocals), and Cole Martin (lead guitar/vocals) released their debut album “Black” in US and Japan in 2008, but are now gearing up for the release of their newest product, “Fancy Blood.” Boasting the same signature classic songwriting, larger-than-life melodies and pop resonance as its predecessor, “Fancy Blood” embodies all that has made Scarlet Grey a southern California powerhouse, and an online global commodity. Not only does the new record feature guest appearances by AFI’s Davey Havok and production work by Jade Puget, but the four-piece have been supporting AFI on tour in preparation for the summer release of “Fancy Blood.” Having previously played with the likes of Saosin, Yellowcard, Rooney, After Midnight Project and others, Scarlet Grey are no strangers to the stage, and are poised to win over all who lend them an ear.

Pick up Fancy Blood on iTunes, Amazon MP3, or buy the CD at any Scarlet Grey show or at their merch store
