Hailing from Slough, UK, A&M / Octone Recording artist BROTHER releases their first single, “Darling Buds of May,” digitally today January 26th, 2011. The self- proclaimed purveyors of “gritpop,” BROTHER has taken England by storm. After playing some dates on One eskimO’s tour in October, Los Angeles band HoneyChild joined Portugal. the Man for three dates on their national tour this fall with White Denim. If you’ve missed the band so far, it’s time to jump on the HoneyChild wagon. Their album Nearer the Earth is available for free at hellohoneychild.com and they’re headed to the Great White North of Vancouver to start recording for their upcoming album.

Here’s some more info about the band:

“HoneyChild was made in Los Angeles, but born all over the world.”

A plane ticket brought Tobias Jesso (Guitars & Vocals), formerly of The Sessions, to Los Angeles by way of Vancouver. Armed with his bass and new material, Tobias set off to start a band better suited to his freshly written tracks, and so began HoneyChild and their journey to recording Nearer The Earth.

MP3 for “The Father”

“The formation of the band was a total whirlwind” says Noah Gersh (Guitars, Banjo, Mandolin, & Vocals). The band is currently comprised of Jesso, Gersh, Erik Donley (Vocals & Guitar), Jamie Schefman (Bass & Vocals), Lance Piebenga (Keys), and Rheese Detrow (Drums). Large and diverse, HoneyChild is group of musicians from all walks of life, hence, Detrow, who they found at some bar in Hell’s Kitchen playing R&B covers. As Gersh puts it, “We’re all very different, and all have incredibly unique things to bring to the table.”

Nearer The Earth began taking shape at a house in Reseda, CA and with the help of just two microphones and a laptop. It is this informal approach to recording that gives Nearer The Earth’s eight tracks their most endearing qualities. A feeling of freshness and immediacy is evident on the Simon and Garfunkel meets Calexico opener, “The Father,” and the sun-drenched California twang of “Driving Song.” Whereas “Tijuana” highlights HoneyChild’s influences, drawing inspiration from Neil Young’s Harvest with the pounding train like snare drumbeats. This coupled with compressed banjo melodies and harmonized vocals; give “Tijuana” a vintage yet modern edge.

The varied nature of the songs has enabled HoneyChild to open up for everyone from Alberta Cross, Portugal. The Man to OneEskimo and White Denim, which is just how they prefer it. Sharing the road with the likes of these artists has allowed the band to be stylistically flexible; combining their own tastes, yet still broadening their musical horizons. Erik Donley says “When you find yourself drinking whiskey and singing John Prine songs with Dead Confederate, you start to reevaluate the way you judge things.”

This is reflected in HoneyChild’s live performances; loose, jangley and downright bluesy, the group showcases their maturing sound and direction, as Gersh describes it, “the beard on our music is getting gruffer and longer.”

When Jack Dishel was a tot, he realized he couldn’t live without music. He went through a childhood metalhead phase (which prompted him to start playing the drums) and an adolescent hip-hop phase (which launched his successful jaunt writing graffiti on trains and running from cops).

After discovering the world of indie rock in college, Jack picked up a guitar, formed a band, played all over NYC, impressed Adam Green and Kimya Dawson and before he knew it, he was wearing a tiara and a mini-skirt as the guitarist for The Moldy Peaches.

He’s now making super smart, catchy music under the name Only Son. He’s opened for Regina Spektor and former bandmate Adam Green a ton, and now he’s releasing Only Son’s second record, Searchlight on Jan 18th.

The first song on the album is “Magic” which you can download below. It’s a beautiful song with some pretty wonderful lyrics, and just a hint of the Beach Boys (and maybe even The Beatles.)

DOWNLOAD “MAGIC” HERE

The video for “Magic” was directed by Adria Petty (Kings Of Leon, Regina Spektor, Beyonce.) It’s a little bit Clockwork Orange and a lot of awesome.

Though Chapter 14 features two members of recently departed metal-core unit Destroy Th e Runner, 14 was in the works long before their tenure in Runner. Vocalist Chad Ackerman (who has also spent time as a guitarist in As I Lay Dying and vocalist in Austrian Death Machine) says “Me and Tanner [Sparks] were doing Chapter 14 full time before we were asked to join Destroy The Runner in 2006.” The original Chapter 14 also included future members of Confide, Chiodos and In Fear And Faith. Ackerman reveals “We did two full U.S. tours on our own, which I actually booked through MySpace and opened up for As I Lay Dying a number of times. The band had a following but we never got a chance to record so towards the end of Runner we were into recording these songs and touching them up with some of our newer influences.”

The result is the forthcoming EP Like Trees In November which has Sparks taking on the role of guitarist, bassist and drummer recorded in his own Sparks Studios. Ackerman who is known for his soaring melodic vocals has delivered his best work here with a confident and powerful range. The music is technical with a post-hardcore attack and at times metallic drums pushing it forward but make no mistake this is vulnerable and emotional rock. Ackerman reveals “Chapter 14 is actually the most poignant chapter in my favorite book, Watership Down.” Watership Down is a popular novel written by English author Richard Adams about a group of rabbits who encounter death and destruction from all around them while searching for a safe home.

“Chapter 14 [of Watership Down] is actually titled “Like Trees In November” and it’s in this chapter that the main rabbits go to persuade their friends to leave the rabbit farm where they live and warn them that the farmer who runs it will destroy them. However none of the rabbits on the farm believe the main characters and think that they are lying. The main characters have to leave their friends behind knowing it is their doom. While the songs on the EP aren’t entirely about Watership Down, relationships including the types that the rabbit shared are a central topic.”

Producer Brian Grider recorded vocals and handled mixing and mastering on the EP at his own SCM Recordings. Long time friend Matt Geise of Lower Definition adds guest vocals to the song “Moth And Rust.”

Penrose is Thomas Murphy, Patrick Murphy, and Daniel Murphy, three brothers from Philadelphia. The origins of the band date back to their grade school days taking piano lessons together, but in the Spring of 2009 they played their first show in a warehouse in North Philadelphia. Since then the brothers have worked to create an original, hard hitting sound that combines the delta blues spirit of John Lee Hooker and R.L. Burnside with the hard rock of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, while allowing the innovation of Pink Floyd and Radiohead to flow throughout.

“From their amazing sound to their endless amount of energy, Penrose has created a great indie band that certainly knows how to Rock and entertain the masses.” -Isaac Davis Jr. (Juniorscave.com)

They have made their mark in Philadelphia, entertaining large crowds at the North Star Bar, Doc Watson’s, The Khyber, and more, and made their debut on the Trocadero Main stage in August. In New York they’ve played packed shows at Webster Hall, The Mercury Lounge, and Arlene’s Grocery, along with an epic show opening for MGMT at Fordham University. Their debut album, “Devil’s Grip”, will be released in December, followed by release parties in both Philadelphia and New York City.

Penrose is also preparing for its CMJ debut with two OFFICIAL CMJ SHOWCASES in New York with No Pulp Music and RethinkPopMusic/TheAudioPerv on October 19th and 22nd.

2010 has already been a crazy year for 23-year-old Thomas Fiss, former member of the popular boy band Varsity Fanclub, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. He’s played shows with Emily Osment and Demi Lovato, completed a summer tour in over 30 cities, started a clothing line, Adisson Apparel, and somehow found time to record his second, self-titled EP, due out October 26th.

Leading up to the release, Thomas is premiering a new song and lyric video each week on his website, ThomasFissMusic.com, as part of a recently launced preorder campaign. “My fans are amazing and have been supportive every step of the way. Fans can select from a variety of options: anything from buying the digital album to receiving a super deluxe version, which includes a personalized video from Thomas himself. Empyr have made it here, and there’s nothing they can’t do. The French five piece – Benoit Poher, Frédéric Duquesne, Benoit Juliard, Florian Dubois and Jocelyn Moza – will release their new album, Unicorn, November 15. Produced by Ken Andrews (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, NIN, Beck), Unicorn came together like a puzzle with each member of the group bringing their own pieces to the table. The band expanded on these fragmented parts and rebuilt the whole with a profound sense of cohesion and confidence. The opening track, “It’s Gonna Be,” gets the record off to a soaring start. It’s anthemic, bold and bright, an appeal to instant bliss, so much so that it was featured in the trailer for the new season of CSI:NY, one of the largest television franchises. “It’s Gonna Be” is also available from Empyr’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/empyrmusic.

Funeral Party, a five-piece alternative rock band from the East L.A. suburb of Whittier, are fresh off a UK tour that included stops at the Reading and Leeds Festivals as well as their home city of Los Angeles. Now Funeral Party are pleased to announce January 25, 2011 as the new U.S. release date for their debut album Golden Age Of Knowhere.

Rising out of the East L.A. party scene, Funeral Party has made their presence known worldwide, earning a spot on NME’s 50 Best New Bands of 2010, a spotlight feature in UK’s famed Q Magazine and added to BBC Radio Zane Lowe’s “Hottest Record in the World” playlist. The Los Angeles Times also proclaims that lead singer Chad Elliot “…[makes] a good case for being the best male vocalist in local rock right now.”

Soon after signing with RCA Records, Funeral Party, whose name was inspired by a Cure song of the same title, finished recording tracks for their full-length debut, Golden Age of Knowhere. The album was produced by Lars Stalfors (Matt & Kim, The Mars Volta) and mixed by Dave Sardy (Band of Horses, LCD Soundsystem, Oasis).

The first three songs on Golden Age of Knowhere – “New York City Moves to the Sound of L.A.,” “Carwars,” and first U.S. single, “Finale” – establish Funeral Party’s up-tempo onslaught. The recently released video for their UK hit “Just Because,” directed by Mike Relm, was praised by BBC’s Chart Blog, calling it “one hell of a pop song.”

Funeral Party’s energetic live act led to opening slots alongside the likes of Yelle, Trail of Dead, and Julian Casablancas, as well as appearances at South By Southwest and Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. This fall, the band will take their danceable art punk on the road again, this time with Irish trio Two Door Cinema Club (US) and Jared Leto-led Thirty Seconds To Mars (UK).
