Them boys are up to something again! This past month Das Racist organized the New York Times-approved MinorityFest in their hometown of Brooklyn. The night consisted of a panel discussion on race moderated by Das Racist, comedy sets from six up-and-coming comedians including Ali Wong and Kumail Nanjiani, and performances by the boys themselves amongst others. Earfarm.com called the night “a good time – and different. Think college dorm party meets intellectual salon.”

Fresh off the heels of that project Das Racist is putting the immigrant work ethic they’ve inherited to good use and pressing onward with a busy winter. This past week they premiered their video for “Rainbow in the Dark,” directed by frequent collaborator Jordan Fish (http://www.jordan-fish.com), on Pitchfork Media. They also recently launched their website, http://www.dasracist.net, which was designed by Fish.

Prefix Mag recently stated “Now we just need an album from the band in 2010.” Ask and ye shall receive! This coming January Das Racist is poised to release their debut EP, Sit Down, Man on their own imprint Greedhead Records. Along with five other joints, the EP will include their inescapable hit “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell,” which was MTV News’ 10th Best Song of 2009. Greedhead Records will also collaborate with Portland, Oregon-based Lasercave (http://www.lasercave.biz/) to put out the debut EP from SAFE (http://www.myspace.com/safesafesafesafesafe) in the form of mp3s, cassette tapes, and custom made VHS’ by the artist.

As if that wasn’t enough, the boys will be playing shows across New York, including:

January 19 at Highline Ballroom (431 W. 16th Street, NYC) with Gordon Voidwell, Tanlines and Mickey Factz

January 23 at Glasslands (289 Kent Ave, Brooklyn) with Chicago’s BBU (Bin Laden Blowin’ Up)

and they will make their way to their alma mater Wesleyan University for a February 12 date. Come March, you can see them at SXSW and by then they’ll have even more tunes for you to rock to on the train with their Shut Up, Dude Mixtape set to release prior to then.

Don’t miss the act Art Forum recently called “critical-race-theory prankstas”. For more information on Das Racist you can visit http://www.dasracist.net or hit them up on Twitter at www.twitter.com/dasracist. Not enough? Check out their blog: http://gordongartrelle.blogspot.com.

Vince Scheuerman of Army of Me just sent out an email message to his mailing list talking about some new music that he’s writing/recording and playing SXSW. Check it out:

    “Hey there!

Over the last several months, we’ve been home working on new music. I’ve been writing and demoing new songs acoustically, and playing a bunch of shows in a stripped down, acoustic setting. Because of the amazing reaction i’ve been getting, it feels really natural to release something along those lines in the very near future. So stay tuned (soon) for a upcoming EP/record, on which I’m currently putting the finishing touches on. It will have a stripped down, acoustic vibe, and explore some more of the intimate side of songwriting and music. Very excited about this..

A couple of shows coming up this week – in College Station, TX & Lancaster, PA..

    * Wed, March 18 @ Texas A&M in College Station, TX @ St. Mary’s Center, FREE show

    * Sat, March 21 @ Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA”

NPR’s always been a friend to the music community. Last year, they worked with five member stations to broadcast 14 concerts from SXSW. NPR’s committed to maintaining its presence at SXSW as this year they will be webcasting and broadcasting concerts, artists interviews and other performances.

From the press release:
On the opening night of the festival, Wednesday, March 18 at 10PM (CT), NPR Music will present a SXSW showcase headlined by The Decemberists at Stubbs Bar-B-Q. The Portland-based band will give the first live performance of its new album, The Hazards of Love, which the band will play in sequence, in its entirety. Joining all five members of The Decemberists on stage will be Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden, who lend leading vocals to the album. Opening bands are North Carolina
trio The Avett Brothers, set to debut songs from its forthcoming album produced by Rick Rubin, and bluesy rockers Heartless Bastards, riding the success of its third record, The Mountain. A SXSW badge is required for this official showcase.

On Thursday, March 19, NPR Music is hosting a daytime concert at The Parish, open to the public, with six acts worth lining up for. Kicking off at 12:30PM (CT), “Music for the Right Brain” will feature roots-pop duo Blind Pilot; BLK JKS, the art-rock band from Johannesburg; Brooklyn’s Dirty Projectors; Somali-born rapper K’NAAN; and songstress Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Downs. Headlining the concert is Blitzen Trapper, whose 2008 release Furr was an NPR listener favorite.

Both concerts will be anchored by Bob Boilen, host and creator of the popular show All Songs Considered and its Live in Concertseries. Joining Boilen will be NPR Music blogger Carrie Brownstein and David Brown, host of Texas Music Matterson KUT in Austin”
