San Francisco rock band the Stone Foxes are pretty bad ass. Not only do they play some of the dirtiest, bluesy rock that you’ll hear on the other side of the Mississippi, but NOTHING can stop them from touring! Need proof? The band’s drummer Shannon Koehler had heart surgery (literally) last week but they will STILL MAKE IT TO AUSTIN FOR SXSW! On the right, you can see a photo of Shannon rocking out on his drumset. If you scroll down, you can see him kicking ass in the hospital (we weren’t kidding about the surgery!)

Shannon was cool to give us a list of the top ten things he’ll need for the road. Check it out below:

Top 10 Road Essentials

1) 20 boxes of gauze for excessive bleeding

2) 1 extra tricuspid heart valve (KEEP ON ICE)

3) 2 super hot lady nurses (just in case I need “medical” attention)

4) 1 pacemaker friendly microwave

5) 3 bottles of vicodin

6) 2 packets of Icy Hot (recommended for sore muscles by Shaquille O’Neal)

7) 1 portable IV drip

8) 1 echocardiogram machine

9) 2 more super hot lady nurses

10) 1 partridge in a pair tree

You can catch the Stone Foxes at SXSW

It may be one week before the entire music industry traipses to Austin for SXSW, but Pittsburgh duo Nic Snyder and Josh Sickels of 1,2,3 just unveiled a performance video from last year’s CMJ Festival that is sure to attract some temporary Austinites to one of the band’s six shows next week. Filmed and edited by director Drew Norton (who also directed Phantogram’s “Mouthful of Diamonds” video), Green Screening is an in-studio session in which bands play in front of a green screen, only to have Norton work his magic in the post-production, adding background scenes and effects behind them. 1,2,3’s Green Screening performance of the song “Confetti” (which will be on their debut LP coming later this year from Frenchkiss), adds even more trickery with the addition of a second Nic Snyder, playing keys while the other Nic sings and plays guitar. And all the while, with a raging storm going on. Check it out at the link below, and the video will also be added to the home page of Green Screening with behind-the-scenes footage later this week.

Watch 1,2,3 perform “Confetti” for Green Screening:

Head over to www.123land.net or the band’s Facebook page to grab two songs from the upcoming record – the previously released “Riding Coach” and the slow and sexy “Heat Lightnin’”. And if you’ll be in Austin next week, be sure to check out one of 1,2,3’s many performances down there (full schedule below). If you won’t, tune in to Livestream.com on Saturday afternoon to catch a live stream of the band playing the New Shapes Party at The Music Gym!

Los Angeles based four-piece Family Of The Year had a busy 2010. They self-released the EP Through The Trees as a follow up to their debut album Songbook, and were elated to find themselves on a tour with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros supporting their album. In Europe and the UK, developments were even more extraordinary as they fostered a quickly growing fan base with their first label release Our Songbook (Volvox Records), a full-length comprised of songs from their self-released full-length and EPs.

This past February they embarked upon their first major tour of Europe, playing to sold out crowds in London and Paris, and making visits to national radio outlets like the BBC and Radio Nova in France, where their song “Psyche or Like Scope” was the #1 single for two months. As on air guests, BBC6 invited them to record a beautiful acoustic rendition of their song “Summer Girl” – View Here

With a breakout year in Europe in 2010, Family Of The Year look to translate that success to their homeland in 2011, following the reverse cross Atlantic path many other great American bands have taken in the recent past. This past winter was spent recording their new album with accomplished producer Wally Gagel (Eels, Norah Jones, Old 97s). At SXSW 2011 the band will showcase their new material in anticipation of the album’s release later this year. Show Schedule Below.

Although based in LA, the members of Family Of The Year come from all corners of the country. The band was formed in 2009 around brothers Joe and Sebastian Keefe, who were born in Wales and grew up living year round on Martha’s Vineyard. James Buckey hails from Jacksonville, FL, and Christina Schroeter from Orange County, California.

“Their sprawling debut album, last year’s Songbook, is filled with summery Americana. But the slick, synthy, nocturnal song “Psyche or Like Scope” is a noted exception, and one of the album’s best tunes.” -Spin.com

If you’ve been to CMJ and SXSW this past year, surely you’ve heard of the band Vanaprasta. Or maybe you saw them play packed shows in Southern California at venues like Spaceland, Cinespace and The Roxy. Perhaps, you saw them headline the Sunset Strip Music Festival at The Viper Room. If you haven’t seen them, we feel sorry for you. The good news is that the Silverlake alternative rockers are going to make their biggest splash yet at this year’s SXSW festival. They’ll be playing EIGHT shows. If you miss them, we seriously question your taste in music and decision making skills. Guitarist Cameron Dmytryk checked in with us recently to tell us a little bit more about the band. Check it out:

If you were to create a mixtape to describe your sound, which songs would you choose?

Cameron: It’s tough. I want to put a bunch of songs that we all love but I’ll try to answer more with songs of our own that put off the same vibe as these songs.

Muse – “The Small Print” from Origin of Symmetry
Frightened Rabbit – “Poke” from Midnight Organ Fight
Led Zeppelin – “Dazed and Confused”
John Lennon – “Oh Yoko!”
Phoenix – “Love Like A Sunset”
Yo La Tengo – “Pass The Hatchet, I think I’m Goodkind”

How are you preparing differently for this year’s SXSW compared to last year?

Cameron: We only had three shows last year, two on Wednesday and one on Friday. It was a little more laid back. This year we have about seven or eight as of now. So, definitely not partying like we did last year. By the time we were done Wednesday night, we didn’t have another show till Friday afternoon. It was a crazy free for all. We did a lot of press but there were a lot of open bars and long nights in Austin. This year it’s a bit more truckin’ around. We also want to see a lot more acts this year since we have an official showcase and we’ll have wristbands.

We’ll probably change up the set a couple of times, especially on Wednesday. We have four shows on Wednesday. We wouldn’t want to play the same set everytime. We might play some older songs that we don’t do or even try some of the new material that we’re looking to premiere at SXSW.

Which artists do you want to see at SXSW?

Cameron: Definitely on a national scale, we want to see the Strokes. I wanna see Odd Future really bad. James Blake, our bass player Tayler really wants to see James Blake. He’s playing in that church, it should be incredible. The Naked & Famous, Gobble Gobble, The Antlers who are playing some new material. We have friends that we want to see like White Arrows, Hands, Voxhaul Broadcast.

Which song have you always wanted to cover?

Cameron: Me and our bass player Taylor have always wanted to do an epic rock version of “Oh Comely” by Neutral Milk Hotel. It’s 8 minutes long and real slow and progressive. It’s just a gorgeous song.

Which song of yours would you like for someone else to cover and who would you want to do it?

Cameron: I would say the Section Quartet. I saw them the first time at Coachella in 2006. They’re this string quartet that covers rock songs like by Led Zeppelin and like Muse. I would want them to do our song “Three Thirty Three”

If you could put on your own SXSW showcase, where would it be and with which bands?

Cameron: Definitely the Belmont where we played for you guys last year. It was just fuckin incredible. We played at night when the sun went down. I remember seeing all the buildings on 6th street and you could look up in the sky and see stars. I haven’t seen stars in the city – I’m from LA- in a long time. With whom, that’s a whole can of worms. I’d have to think about that a lot more. For brevity’s sake, let’s just say the Belmont with a bunch of bad ass bands.

What do you have coming up next?

Cameron: For SXSW, we’re really promoting hard. We’re really excited about it. We’re gonna get in the studio for a couple of weeks right after SXSW to work on some new material. Then we’re hitting the road the first week of April doing the RUMBLE tour going from Seattle, Portland, San fRancisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Las Vegas, LA and the whole west coast.

The Lonely Forest unveil a new song, “Coyote,” as the KEXP Song of the Day today. The song is taken from their forthcoming Trans Records label debut Arrows, in stores March 22. Critical acclaim for Arrows in advance of the release includes praise from NYLON, which posts, “We are in love with The Lonely Forest. Listen to them now!” and Alternative Press, which calls Arrows “the band’s most self-assured album yet.” Meanwhile, NPR’s Song of the Day hails the band’s previous single, saying “‘Turn Off This Song’ serves as a catchy call to arms, not to mention one of the best and most honest slices of pop music around.”

The band is embarking on an extensive North American tour supporting The Joy Formidable, which also includes a stop at South By Southwest next week. (Dates below)

Trans Records is the new label headed by Chris Walla, guitarist and producer for Grammy-nominated rock band Death Cab for Cutie, who found The Lonely Forest’s music so compelling he made the band his label’s very first signing. Walla produced and engineered Arrows at Sound City studio in Los Angeles, Tiny Telephone in San Francisco and his own, Portland-based studio, Alberta Court. He also mixed three tracks—“Be Everything,” “Turn Off This Song And Go Outside” and “I Don’t Want To Live There.” The balance of the album was mixed by John Goodmanson (Girls, Nada Surf, Weezer).

“The Lonely Forest proves to me,” says Walla, “In a time full of throwbacks and references and meta-references, that nothing can beat a focused, bulletproof guitar rock band with amazing songs. I didn’t start a label for nothing.”

From the outset The Lonely Forest—singer/guitarist/keyboardist John Van Deusen, guitarist Tony Ruland, drummer Braydn Krueger and bassist Eric Sturgeon— has been about inclusion. Having made their mark as a regional favorite with three prior records, the band never imagined a swift and organic rise to national distinction.

Singer-songwriter David Berkeley is ready to embark on his third trip to SXSW. What makes this trip different is that David’s bringing a full band. He also has a new record coming out but we’ll let you get to know David a little bit better below:

“Berkeley’s a sixties-esque troubadour with songs to swoon by and a voice sweeter than incense and peppermints.
… He’s a double fantasy of Nick Drake and Donovan.”
- Robin Aigner, Rolling Stone.com

If you were to make a mixtape to describe your band’s sound using songs by other bands, which would they be?

Jeff Tweedy – “Not For The Season”
Nick Drake – “From The Morning”
Beck – “Lost Cause”
Grant Lee Phillips – “See America”
Beth Orton – “Concrete Sky”

What’s something must always bring on tour?

Tabasco sauce

What are you currently promoting

My new record Some Kind Of Cure and a new book called 140 Goats and a Guitar which tells 13 stories, one behind each song on the record. The book comes with the download code for the record so you go through both together. You read the story, listen to the corresponding song and keep moving through the book and the record.
