Through both his solo work and as a frontman for the legendary Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould pioneered a signature wall of guitar sound and unmistakable vocal style that has imprinted a defining influence on more than one generation-impacting artists including Dave Grohl, Ryan Adams and Britt Daniel of Spoon, all of whom paid homage to Mould by performing songs from all stages of his career at a tribute show last year at L.A.’s Disney Hall. In the three decades encompassing his career thus far, however, Bob Mould saw his greatest success during his stint as lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for iconic early ’90s trio Sugar.

Mould broke onto the rock scene in the early 1980s as front man of the hardcore band Hüsker Dü. Hüsker Dü packed decades of creative evolution into the barely five years between the release of its first and final records, blowing eardrums and minds in equal measure while progressing from the primal breakneck caterwaul of Everything Falls Apart to the double-vinyl conceptual opus Zen Arcade to bona fide initial pop rock inroads with Candy Apple Grey before disintegrating in 1987. Mould re-emerged in 1989 as a sober and formidable singer/songwriter with his landmark solo debut Workbook, and continued working as a solo artist through the following year’s Black Sheets Of Rain.

Mould returned to a three-man band format with the 1992 debut of Sugar. With Mould on guitar and vocals, David Barbe on bass and vocals, and Malcolm Travis on drums, Sugar harnessed the sonic chaos of Hüsker Dü into a more focused pop/rock framework with increased emphasis on the songs’ exciting melodies and irresistible hooks as well as the increasingly accomplished musicianship behind them. Critics and audiences alike warmed to Sugar’s fresh and innovative balance of punishing volume and pop sparkle, with many regarding this phase as their favorite of Mould’s entire career.

Sugar’s 1992 debut album Copper Blue sold over 250,000 units upon its original release and received overwhelming praise. Rolling Stone christened it “thunderous”; Vogue dubbed it “smashing”. NME would ultimately name it their 1992 Album of the Year. Currently, Mould has been commemorating Copper Blue’s 20th anniversary by playing the record in its entirety with his current band of Jason Narducy (bass) and Jon Wurster (drums).

Recorded and mixed during the same intense sessions that produced Copper Blue, the Beaster EP was originally released in April 1993. Notably darker in tone than the widescreen power-pop of Copper Blue, Beaster nevertheless boasts some of Mould’s most powerful songwriting.

File Under: Easy Listening a/k/a F.U.E.L. — the third and final album by this short-lived but brilliant trio — was originally released in September 1994, featuring songs such as “Your Favorite Thing” that endure as mainstays of Mould’s solo performances to this day.

Mac McCaughan of Superchunk & Merge wrote of the reissues:
When word went around that Bob Mould had new band, not only a “band” band (as opposed to hired band to play his solo albums on tour) but also a trio, of course anyone raised from teenhood on punk rock and Husker Du in particular (like myself) went into high expectation mode. Copper Blue turned out to be a distillation of Bob’s pop mode and roaring guitar mode into one tightly wound explosion of sound. There was space enough for the songs to breathe, but a driving urgency & energy in the rhythm section of Barbe & Travis that gives the whole album a barely-harnessed feel. Sonically, on songs like “The Act We Act” (Copper Blue), “JC Auto” (Beaster) & “Gee Angel” (F.U.E.L.) Sugar took Husker Du’s aesthetic widescreen, the center held steady by Bob’s focused songwriting. It’s kind of incredible what Sugar did within such a small discography; there’s no wasted space and the flow of great songs is a surprising, exciting listen 20 years later.

Atlantic recording group Matchbox Twenty has announced the release of their hugely-anticipated new album scheduled to arrive everywhere on September 4th.

“NORTH” marks Matchbox Twenty’s fourth full-length studio recording and first all-new album in a decade. “The title refers to us finding our way,” says Matchbox Twenty’s Paul Doucette. “We went into this record with a lot of material. Many different songs that could have taken us in many different directions. It sort of overwhelmed us for a bit. But, at a certain point, we figured it out. We figured out where North was.” The album’s electrifying first single, “She’s So Mean,” is slated to be unveiled in June.

“NORTH” sees Matchbox Twenty driving their pop-rock sound further forward; magnifying the indelible melodies, crafty lyricism, and glorious hooks that have always defined their multi-platinum body of work. The band—Rob Thomas, Paul Doucette, Kyle Cook and Brian Yale,– lived together last Summer in a house in Nashville where they all collaborated on the new material before once again joining forces with the Grammy Award-winning producer Matt Serletic at his Emblem Studios in Calabasas, California. The result of their labors stands among Matchbox Twenty’s finest, with songs like “Overjoyed” and “Put Your Hands Up” marked by the band’s instantly identifiable sonic approach and unadulterated high spirits.

“NORTH” follows Matchbox Twenty’s most recent release, 2007’s RIAA gold certified “EXILE ON MAINSTREAM.” In addition to compiling such classic hits as “Push,” “Bent,” and “Unwell,” the album featured six new tracks, including still another smash single, the Steve Lillywhite-produced “How Far We’ve Come,” which is the band’s biggest selling single to date. The group also did a SRO global tour in support of “EXILE ON MAINSTREAM” playing in front of their largest crowds ever in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Matchbox Twenty immediately established themselves as one of modern pop-rock’s most popular and talented new bands with the arrival of their blockbuster debut album, 1996’s “YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU.” The album generated five extraordinary hit singles – including “Long Day,” “Back 2 Good,” and “3 am” – on its way to RIAA Diamond Award certification for total U.S. sales now exceeding 12 million. Two further multi-platinum albums followed, with 2000’s “MAD SEASON” and 2002’s “MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE” each spawning a steady stream of hugely successful singles, including such chart-topping favorites as “If You’re Gone,” “Disease,” and “Bright Lights.”

In addition to more than 30 million records sold worldwide, Matchbox Twenty has also earned countless accolades, including five Grammy nominations, four American Music Award nods, and the 2004 People’s Choice Award for “Favorite Musical Group.” What’s more, Rob Thomas has proven one of the most highly decorated artists of recent years, receiving three Grammy Awards, 11 BMI Awards, and two Billboard “Songwriter of the Year” honors for both his chart-topping solo work as well as collaborations with such legends as Santana, Mick Jagger, and Willie Nelson. Thomas’ collaboration with Carlos Santana on “Smooth” was also named the #2 Most Popular Song Ever on Billboard’s List of the 100 Most Popular songs behind “The Twist.” He was also named to Billboard’s Top 20 List of Hot 100 Songwriters 2000-2011 at #5 and was the top ranking artist/songwriter on the list.

On June 12, Manchester Orchestra frontman Andy Hull will release “The Church of the Good Thief,” the third album in the trilogy of his solo project, Right Away, Great Captain! This new chapter completes the tale Hull began on 2006′s “The Bitter End” and 2008′s “The Eventually Home” of a sailor who, upon discovering his wife cheating on him with his brother, runs away to sea and gradually descends into a vengeful rage.

“The Church of the Good Thief” will be released via all major digital retailers, and will also be available, along with “The Bitter End” and “The Eventually Home,” in a four-LP vinyl box set. Additionally, the deluxe pre-order package for the vinyl box set will include “The Lost Sea,” a collection of unreleased songs, demos and outtakes, as well as a handmade lyric book and keychain, and a photo print by Ryan Russell, all hand-numbered and signed by Hull. The album pre-order begins today at http://rightawaygreatcaptain.bandcamp.com/

Hull will support the album with a brief Midwest and East Coast solo tour in July, hitting markets including Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New York; see below for a complete list of dates. Tickets are available to fans now via a Ducat King presale at http://rightawaygreatcaptain.ducatking.com/ and go on sale to the general public on Thursday, May 24 at 12:00 PM local time.

Hull began the Right Away, Great Captain! project in 2006 as a writing exercise. “I had the storyline for the first album in my head,” he explains, “and started to write it in this other characters body. It was really rewarding as a writer to put yourself in someone else’s position and give yourself some walls that you could not break. I had always wanted to embark on something like a trilogy and from the beginning, I felt like three albums could sum up the story. If I didn’t set out for it to be a trilogy, I could have extended this story and it would have gotten stale and I don’t know if I ever would have finished it. What I could not have ever expected was the amount of growth that I went through personally from ages 19 to 25, because you don’t really think about that when you’re 19. As I began to grow, the character grew, and when the character grew, the story grew too.”

“The Eventually Home” ended with our protagonist returning home from three years at sea and standing over his wife and brother asleep in bed, trying to decide whether to murder her. As “The Church of the Good Thief” commences with the song “Blame,” we’re just 30 minutes later in the storyline, as he chooses to kill his brother instead, while his wife watches in terror. His children witness the slaying, neighbors hear the commotion, and the sailor is quickly arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. The remainder of this final album finds him alone in his prison cell, reflecting on his tragic life, communicating with the ghost of his captain and mentor from the first album, and attempting to make peace with his family and his God before his execution.

Hull intentionally created an album to close out this trilogy that sounds and feels as solitary as the conflicted emotions that the character is experiencing. “Both of the previous albums contained a lot of different settings, but my hope on this record was to have it sound like a man in a jail cell with just a guitar and a piano,” he says. “I wanted my voice to be used as a narrative during his isolation.” Hull spent last winter recording during his breaks from touring, and as with the first two Right Away, Great Captain! records (and the entire Manchester Orchestra catalog), teamed up with his longtime producer/collaborator Dan Hannon. The album was recorded in Hannon’s living room studio in Atlanta, and mixed by Hannon, Hull, another longtime studio collaborator, Brad Fisher; and Manchester Orchestra guitarist Robert McDowell at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC.

Brooklyn’s beloved guitar-anthem optimists Fang Island premiere the first track, “Asunder,” from their forthcoming sophomore album today at Pitchfork.

Fang Island announce their return with an album befitting its title: Major. In anticipation of the album’s summer release, the band has posted teaser videos. Watch them below:

Like the painstakingly chiseled marble of the album artwork, Major is hefty, solid, monolithic and regal. Whereas Fang Island described their celebrated 2010 self-titled Sargent House debut as, “everyone high-fiving everyone,” Major is evermore confident, triumphant and brimming with infectious enthusiasm. Its warm harmonies are given proper berth with more expansive dynamics and focused pop song craft.

“One of our core ideas has always been that our songs would be all of your favorite parts of the song that other bands make you wait 8 minutes to get to,” explains guitarist/vocalist Jason Bartell. “We wanted to be the band that’s nothing but your favorite hooks back to back.” Major shows Fang Island deftly achieving that aim.

Kicking off with the overlapping neoclassical piano pirouette and chiming harmonized guitars of album opener “Kindergarten”, Fang Island makes it clear from the outset that this is an album of musical and sonic growth, while at the same time a chorus of voices repeat the mantra, “all I know/ I learned in / kindergarten.” It’s that same unabashed embracing of childlike wonder filtered through visionary artistic sophistication that gives Fang Island its unique charm and sets the tone for this (ahem) major step forward for Bartell, guitarist/vocalist Chris Georges and drummer Marc St. Sauveur. Without a moment’s rest, the definitive summer pop jam “Sisterly” launches the album skyward, led by the thick hook of a wah-wah pedal “chunka-chunka-chunka” riff that’s guaranteed to have listeners busting out their air guitar moves. “Never Understand” revisits the classic Fang Island guitar harmony dog pile while what sounds like a cheery mob repeatedly intones, “I hope I never understand.” Elsewhere, the rollicking anthem “Asunder” quickly builds momentum like a rolling snowball that eventually careens into a summertime BBQ — the explosive payoff as the elements collide is pure pop bliss.

Throughout, Major highlights the band’s endeavor to elevate positivity as an art form. “It’s kind of similar to writing songs about being sad,” Bartell says. “It can come across as simplistic, or easy. Positive songs often run the risk of sounding shallow, but we feel there are a lot of shades and depths to positivity that can be explored.” That exploration becomes clear from the first notes of Major.

However, Georges sums up the album’s bold steps best in this short sampling of the band’s nearly 1,000 bullet point explanation of the album title:

“Some reasons we called the album Major:
- Major key (the first song is minor though!)
- Valley girl colloquialism
- Because we are on an independent label
- Because the rank under Sargent (House) is major
- It sounds like a constellation
- Steely Dan’s “Any Major Dude” was in rotation a lot during the sessions
- The record is packaged to look like stone because it’s ROCK. I really wanted people to hold a piece of rock when they picked up the record.”

Major will be available everywhere on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on July 24th, 2012.
