Born 20 years ago out of punk rock will and unbridled passion, Lollapalooza—founded by Perry Farrell, festival visionary and lead singer of Jane’s Addiction–has rocked through the parks, amphitheaters and fairgrounds of North America before becoming an acclaimed destination festival in Chicago every summer, leaving countless memorable musical moments in its wake. Next year, the festival will once again touch down in South America with the second edition of Lollapalooza Chile in O’Higgins Park in Santiago, March 31 – April 1, 2012, and will venture across the continent for the first-ever Lollapalooza Brazil at the Jockey Club in São Paulo, April 7-8, 2012.

In a feat of cultural exchange last April, Lollapalooza Chile captured the eyes, ears and imagination of South America. In 2012 the continent will experience a double dose of this Lollapalooza magic when the festival makes back-to-back weekend stops in Chile and Brazil. The two festivals will share some–but not all acts–on their bills. Lollapalooza Chile and Lollapalooza Brazil will both welcome the Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, MGMT, TV On The Radio, Bassnectar, Band of Horses, Thievery Corporation, Peaches, Cage the Elephant, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Friendly Fires, Foster the People and Tinie Tempah.

Fresh from triumphing over the elements with this year’s Lollapalooza U.S. headline set of a lifetime, Foo Fighters are sure to turn equally dynamic main stage closing sets in both Brazil and Chile– performances that will mark the Foos’ first trip ever in Chile as well as their first Brazilian appearance in over a decade.

Festivalgoers in Chile will experience rare treats with Bjork and Avicii, as well as an eclectic collection of bands including progressive rockers Los Jaivas, the socially conscious Juana Fe, punk rock giant BBS Paranoicos, and the Chilean revelation of rockorgánico, Camila Moreno.

Lollapalooza Brazil will host the triumphant return of Jane’s Addiction and a special blend of iconic indie rockers from every region of the country, including Plebe Rude from Brasília, Wander Wildner from Porto Alegre and Cascadura from Salvador. “The people of Sao Paulo have been very active–twittering me whom they want to see in the 2012 Lolla lineup,” states Farrell. “Judging by all the requests, they are going to erupt. We really delivered for them. Now, I want them to show me how you party in Brasil!”

Both of these two-day music extravaganzas will take place in a gorgeous urban setting, with multiple music stages, an electronic tent, amazing local fare, and a Kidzapalooza area for the little rockers.

Lollapalooza Chile will return to O’Higgins Park in Santiago on March 31 – April 1, 2012. Discounted two-day passes are on-sale now, while supplies last. After that, tickets will be available at the regular price at www.lollapaloozacl.com

MORE TO BE ANNOUNCED!

Lollapalooza: Lollapalooza was born two decades ago when Perry Farrell, lead singer of fabled alternative rockers Jane’s Addiction, started planning a farewell tour for the group. His idea morphed into a larger-than-life musical roadshow that would bring music, culture and community to fans across North America, before finding a permanent home in Chicago’s historic Grant Park in 2005.

Lollapalooza was reborn as a summer destination festival, delivering an ever-more diverse array of 130+ artists from all genres on eight states. Widely considered one of the premier festivals in the world, Lollapalooza continues to thrive in the Windy City getting bigger and better with every year. This year’s gathering was headlined by Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, MUSE, My Morning Jacket, DeadMau5, Cold War Kids, and A Perfect Circle.

Perry Farrell is one of the most influential and original musical figures in recent history. Dubbed as the “Godfather of Alternative Rock,” Farrell fronts Jane’s Addiction which formed in 1985. Creating a new genre and musical movement, Farrell and Jane’s Addiction changed the music scene and paved the way for bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and STP. In 1993, Perry created Porno for Pyros, a daring evolution to his diversity and growth. As well as being a groundbreaking musician, he is the creator and founder of Lollapalooza. Launched in 1991, SPIN magazine listed Lollapalooza as the #1 tour that changed the world. Known for its musical diversity, Lollapalooza was instrumental in exposing alternative music formats to the masses and establishing a sense of commonality across a fragmented demographic. The first of its kind, Lollapalooza quickly established itself as a lifestyle festival, pushing the envelope and exposing concert goers to a subculture of ‘alternative’ living and art, and provided a platform for numerous environmental and human-rights causes as well. As a constant creative force, Farrell continues to push his own artistic horizon as a music producer, electronic music performer and visual artist, as well as a rock icon. In November 2011, he was honored at the annual Billboard Touring Conference & Awards with the “Apple Award.” Perry is the first-ever recipient of this award, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of legendary promoter Bill Graham’s death. Perry received this honor because Billboard recognized that Perry has always given fans special experiences, as Graham did before him (the “Apple Award” is so named because Bill Graham gave out apples to fans leaving Fillmore West shows).

Bass Island

Saturday night the bass freaks descended on southern Manhattan’s Governor’s Island for what promised to be one of the most exclusive and memorable events of the summer. Boasting some of the most unique and spectacular views in all of New York City, the 172 acre island’s main concert field was almost too perfect a setting for the days festivities. Similar to the famed regional Bass Center events, Bassnectar along with an eclectic lineup of supporting acts including Lupe Fiasco and others made their last NYC stop of 2011 really count. The island served as sanctuary to the bass loving masses of the eastern seaboard while their brethren on the West Coast enjoyed Outside Lands Festival. 10,000 amped up circus freaks isolated on a prime piece of NYC real estate made Bass Island an overwhelming success. The island was jam packed with art installations, and fans got well over 6 hours of crunchy tunes. I’d be surprised if there was a more worth while ticket sold in NYC all summer. Beautiful weather, a great crowd, and a great sequence of acts on one of New York’s most coveted venues…..

The wobble began on the ferry over and continued into the wee hours of Saturday night and probably through Sunday for some. The energy at events like this is always the best part. People live for this stuff.

By 4 o’clock sharp, Joro Boro was on stage and loving it. I’m pretty sure most people didn’t anticipate music to actually start so early, and if they had I’m sure the island would’ve filled up much earlier. Throughout Joro Boro’s set as well as Dave Nada who followed, the island slowly but surely began to get fill up with people, energy, and anticipation. Dubby, mellow, perfect daytime music. By the time Virtual Boy took the stage, the concert field was loaded and people started getting rowdy. Prefuse 73 was the runt of the litter providing more like what sounded like ambient background music to a crowd of fire breathing glow stick wielding bass dragons. Some of their sounds were interesting, but they were clearly somewhat out of place amongst the hip hop bass crowd. Lesson learned. Its got to be tough for the early acts sometimes because the fans are getting situated and are not typically paying a tremendous amount of attention to music yet. Even still, the early music was great overall. It wasn’t until DJ Ztrip took the stage that people really started to pay attention and throw down in true bass head fashion. A combination of crowd-pleasing old school rap samples and drum heavy rock n roll provided the first substantial performance of the night. Let’s be honest, we all know its no real challenge to mash buttons on stage, but I have to give props to ZTrip for his transitions and song choices. Many would compare his style to Girl Talk who I personally can’t stand. ZTrip actually allowed the fans to enjoy more than 5 seconds of continuous music rather than throwing clips past your head at light speed before you could even acknowledge what your hearing. Highlights included a few Rage Against the Machine tracks, and the Beastie Boys energetic mega hit ‘Sabatoge’ which was my personal favorite. I worked up a solid sweat during that one. I thought it was great, and I’m a far more harsh critic than most.

Before Bass Island, I’d heard very little of Lupe Fiasco’s music and had certainly never seen him live so I wasn’t sure what to think. When a close friend handed me an all access pass right before his set, I knew I’d soon have an up close look. Needless to say, I loved it. Although the shredding guitar riffs may have been slightly overwhelming to some of his vocal tracks, I thought it meshed very well with the other artists, especially Bassnectar with whom he later performed.

By quarter of 10, Bassnectar was on the stage giving his usual shpiel while getting ready to unleash his self coined brand of “omnitempo maximalism” in the form of electromagnetic shock waves through the faces of everyone within a three quarter mile radius. Throughout his whole set, the energy was intense as usual. Meshing mostly hip hop samples these days with some of the most earth shattering bass cannon explosions known to man, Bassnectar once again demonstrates just why he has created one of the most loyal fan bases in the game. His shows are just as much about the experience as they are about the music itself, and this strategy has proven highly effective for over a decade. With the recent bass craze expanding from 14 year olds just experimenting with music (and other things) through hipster late-twenties professionals, Bassnectar has proven that his unique genre of musical style is going to be around for quite some time to come.

Of all the NYC events so far this summer, Bass Island may have been among the most worthwhile tickets to have. Drinks were reasonable and abundant, food was great, and even the event staff and security were more jolly and loose than usual. I think there’s something in the air on Governor’s Island. If you’ve yet to experience an event here, I’d strongly suggest putting it into your immediate plans. Big thanks to everyone that made it happen including the Bassnectar team, the staff, and of course the fans who are always representing in fine style. A job well done everyone, and A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL.

In its two years, the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival has set the standard for live music in Northern California. The 2010 lineup will once again bring unmatched creative programming that showcases the top artists in a large variety of scenes, including rock, pop, world music, soul, hip-hop and electronic. Like the first two years, major national headliners such as Kings of Leon, Furthur Featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, The Strokes, My Morning Jacket, Phoenix, Social Distortion, Levon Helm and Al Green, will perform alongside the best emerging artists in the world, including Gogol Bordello, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Janelle Monáe, Tokyo Police Club, The Temper Trap, Pretty Lights, Dawes and more. The complete announced lineup is listed below. More acts will be announced soon.

Saturday’s headliners Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, both members of the Grateful Dead, played Golden Gate Park frequently in the late 60′s and early 70′s. Furthur’s headlining slot will mark the first time that Phil Lesh and Bob Weir will perform together again in the Park since Bill Graham’s memorial tribute, ‘Love, Laughter and Music’ in 1991. After three years of non-stop touring off their latest and hugely successful album, Grammy Award-winning band Kings of Leon will play on Sunday evening in Golden Gate Park for the first time ever.

From its inception, Outside Lands has celebrated the four pillars of Bay Area culture – music, food, wine and technology. There is no other festival that honors its home city to such an extent, making it one of the most unique and enjoyable events in the country. The eclectic nature of the music programming extends to the approach festival organizers take to bringing under one “roof” the best in wine and food the region has to offer. At no other festival can you dine on the delicacies of the city’s most famous top-tiered restaurants while sampling some of the best wine in the world.
