GRAMMY®-winning musician and songwriter Ben Harper has selected his favorite ballads for a career-spanning retrospective titled By My Side, to be released October 16 by Virgin/EMI. The collection, available in CD and digital formats, features 12 of Harper’s most unforgettable songs, including “Forever,” “Diamonds On The Inside,” and “Waiting On An Angel,” and also introduces a new ballad, “Crazy Amazing,” which is exclusive to this release. By My Side also includes a rare studio version of “Not Fire Not Ice,” previously unreleased in the U.S., which until now was available only on the international single for “Ground On Down.”

Harper will headline his first-ever solo acoustic tour this fall, beginning September 26 in Ann Arbor, MI and continuing to several other major cities across North America before heading to New Zealand and Australia. Billed as “An Acoustic Evening with Ben Harper,” the tour will include Harper’s first headline performance at New York City’s Carnegie Hall on October 10. Ever since his acclaimed acoustic performance at the inaugural Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2002, Harper has been besieged by fan requests for this kind of intimate outing. He will perform songs from throughout his career – from his 1994 debut, Welcome to the Cruel World, to his latest album, 2011′s critically acclaimed Give Till It’s Gone.

A musician, songwriter, producer, and activist, Ben Harper has released 10 acclaimed studio albums and three live records since 1994. These albums, combined with an unceasing commitment to international touring, have helped him grow a fan base that now spans several continents. Whether the soul of southern Gospel, ’70s funk, blues, reggae, or straightforward rock and roll, Harper and his trademark Weissenborn guitar continue to stun audiences with incendiary live performances and timeless songwriting. A collaborator by nature, Harper has recorded and performed with a long list of artists including Ringo Starr, Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, Charlie Musselwhite, Tom Morello, Rickie Lee Jones, Taj Mahal, Jack Johnson and Vanessa De Matta. His album with the Blind Boys of Alabama, There Will Be A Light, earned two GRAMMY® Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.

Give Till It’s Gone, Ben Harper’s 10th studio album and first solo record since 2006’s Both Sides of the Gun, is out today on Virgin Records. Harper will perform the collection’s first single, “Rock N’ Roll Is Free,” on “Late Show with David Letterman” tomorrow, May 18. After the taping, he’ll play a live multi-platform concert at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater as part of CBS Interactive Music Group’s leading concert webcast series, LIVE ON LETTERMAN, presented by AT&T. It will be webcast live and on-demand through CBS Properties and Vevo. Further details are available here.

Harper will also appear on “The Early Show” (May 19), “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (May 24) and “Conan” (May 25). He’ll play a series of international festivals this summer and launch a North American headlining tour on August 25 in San Francisco. See below for itinerary or visit www.BenHarper.com.

In a three-and-a-half star review, Rolling Stone called Give Till It’s Gone “a great record…his most searingly personal album.” “Harper finally sounds as weathered and tortured as his songs have always aspired to be. The heartbreak on Give Till It’s Gone is savage and genuine,” said Entertainment Weekly, awarding the album an “A-.” Spin praised the “fuzz-funky ‘Spilling Faith’” and the “soul-punk blast” “Clearly Severely” while NoDepression.com observed: “the songs punch along with purpose, alternating between searing stadium anthems and Harper’s devastatingly heartrending ballads.”

Harper will give a special free performance at the Apple Store, Soho, on Wednesday, May 18th.

After playing a series of international festivals this summer, Virgin Records recording artist Ben Harper will launch a North American headlining tour. The run will kick off on August 25 at The Warfield in San Francisco, CA and include a show at Terminal 5 in New York City (October 1) and a two-night stand at Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club (October 4 and 5). See below for itinerary or visit his official site.

Harper will celebrate the May 17 release of his new album, Give Till It’s Gone, with a series of national television appearances. He’ll perform the collection’s first single, “Rock N’ Roll Is Free,” on “Late Show with David Letterman” on May 18 and follow the taping with a live multi-platform concert at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater. The event is part of CBS Interactive Music Group’s leading concert webcast series, LIVE ON LETTERMAN, presented by AT&T. The concert will be webcast live and on-demand through CBS Properties and VEVO. Additional details here.

Give Till It’s Gone is Harper’s first solo record since 2006’s Both Sides of the Gun. He recorded most of the album at the Los Angeles studio of Jackson Browne, who harmonizes with him on the wistful ”Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn.” The album also features two tracks written and performed with Ringo Starr – the psychedelic-tinged “Spilling Faith” and the improvisational “Get There From Here.” The video for “Rock N’ Roll Is Free,” which was directed by Liam Harrison, recently premiered on Amazon.com. All of the late night TV shows do a pretty solid job of booking a wide variety of guests and exposing a bunch of new music to everyone. One thing that the Late Show with David Letterman does better than anyone is host these special “Live on Letterman” sessions that are webcast live and available to be streamed to everyone afterward. From TV On The Radio to Foo Fighters, Live on Letterman showcases some really cool artist and the best part: it’s always more than one song (usually about an hour, if not more!). Wednesday May 18th, Ben Harper will stop by for one of these performances. Ben will be playing new music from his album Give Till It’s Gone (out May 17th). If you wanna go, email us theaudioperv@gmail.com (with the subject:I WANNA SEE BEN HARPER ON LETTERMAN!) with your name and we’ll email you back by Monday afternoon if you win! (Winner must be at least 18 years of age with valid ID)

Please note: You’d only be winning entry for you and one guest to the Live on Letterman performance at 8PM on Wednesday May 18th, not to the actual Late Show with David Letterman taping earlier in the day. The performance will be at the Ed Sullivan Theater located at 1697 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. If you can’t make it to the show, do not enter the giveaway!

Ben Harper premiered his animated video for “Rock N’ Roll Is Free,” watch it here!

Give Till It’s Gone, due out on May 17th on Virgin Records, was recently spotlighted in Rolling Stone’s Spring Music Preview.

The songs on Give Till It’s Gone – Harper’s first solo record since 2006’s Both Sides of the Gun – are nothing less than a revelation, expressing one man’s struggle, confusion and, ultimately, redemption. Harper has never been afraid to dig deep into his emotions for his songs, but there’s a sense of maturity and experience on Give Till It’s Gone that add new weight to his efforts. Most of the album was recorded at the Los Angeles studio of Jackson Browne, who harmonizes with him on the wistful ”Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn.” The album also features Ringo Starr on two tracks. “Spilling Faith” and “Get There From Here” were co- written in the studio with the legendary drummer. The pre-order for Give Till It’s Gone is underway now at iTunes.
