Hollywood Records has announced a Greatest Hits collection titled Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin from their multi-platinum rock band BREAKING BENJAMIN to be released on August 16, 2011. The two-disc release will feature the band’s chart-topping hits including “Breath,” “So Cold,” “Sooner Or Later,” “The Diary of Jane” and “I Will Not Bow,” as well as an entire disc of rare recordings including never-before-released songs, live performances, rare acoustic recordings and remixes.
A remixed version of “Blow Me Away,” the lead track from the two-disc set, features the soaring vocals of Syd Duran of the band Valora and is already heating up the rock radio charts. The song is available for fans on iTunes now.
The songs on Shallow Bay are culled from the band’s catalog: 2002’s Saturate, 2004’s We Are Not Alone, 2006’s Phobia, and 2009’s Dear Agony. The second two—We Are Not Alone and Phobia—yielded spectacular results with each being certified Platinum. We Are Not Alone spawned a pair of No. 1 radio hits (“So Cold” and “Sooner Or Later”) and sold 2.3 million units (albums and digital tracks). Phobia debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200, hit No. 1 on the Rock Album Chart and was one of the top 50 selling rock albums of 2006. It featured one No. 1 and two Top Five rock radio hits (“Breath,” “Diary of Jane” and “Until The End”) and sold 2.8 million units (albums and digital tracks). 2009’s Dear Agony debuted #4 on the Billboard Top 200 chart on one of the busiest release days of the year and #1 on the iTunes Rock Album Chart. Dear Agony also spun off a #1 song at Active Rock with “I Will Not Bow” where it stayed #1 for five weeks straight.
Over the past decade Breaking Benjamin has amassed a sizeable and loyal diehard fan base both through their music as well as their electrifying live performances. For those fans, old and new alike, Shallow Bay will be a must-have collection. It’s a beautiful spring day outside the Utica Memorial Auditorium and there is already a line at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon. Why you ask? Well for the Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle concert. You could almost cut the anticipation and excitement in the air, at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Breaking Benjamin made their return in this massive four month long tour all over the U.S with Chevelle, Red and Thousand Foot Krutch. The two opening bands, Thousand Foot Krutch and Red were entertaining but lacking. Perhaps the lack of rock radio stations playing new music was the source of a lot of empty stares and beer runs during both openers’s sets.
Chevelle took the stage with such intensity that you can’t help instantly feel your heart race to the music. The lead singer, Pete Loeffler sings as if he’s baring his whole soul to you but without the emoness or harshness of some other bands. He knows how to work a crowd, getting them to jump and mosh around, even going as far as calling a girl out in a playful matter, “Why are you yawning at a rock concert!? looks like you need to wake up, here’s some water!” The crowd was at its loudest when the band played old favorites such as “The Red†and “The Clincher.†You can tell how much they have matured into the music without taking the fun out of it. Chevelle formed in 1995 in Grayslake, Illinois, originally with three brothers, Pete, Sam and Joe Loeffler. Later, Joe was replaced by brother in law Dean Bernardini, still keeping it in the family. With several hit singles from four studio albums (Wonder What’s Next, This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In), Vena Sera and Sci-Fi Crimes), Chevelle played a much too short but sweet set.
As the lead guitarist, Aaron Fink is the first to walk on stage and immediately starts playing as the rest of Breaking Benjamin comes out. The crowd roars as if a local championship sports team took the stage. Frontman Ben Burnley takes the mic and it just blows you away. The passion and intensity that Breaking Benjamin presents on their albums is only exceeded by their amazing live performance. You can see the pure, raw emotion in Burnley’s face, one that seems possessed by the devil, with the howls and roars. In actuality, Burnley just wants his music to mean something and connect with his audience; he succeeds. The set was filled with touching video tribute montages to great music heroes of the past and the people of the armed forces. Mixed in a sea of lighters and cell phones in the air, Breaking Benjamin’s fans are relentless singing along to every lyric, keeping in tow with the band and never slowing down. The band even rewarded their loudest fans by giving out free tee shirts. The bond between band and fan may not be stronger than Breaking Benjamin and their following. The band dedicated “Polyamorous†a single from their first studio album Saturate, to all the fans who have been with them for the past ten years. Having played across the country countless times over the past decade, that’s a lot of fans.

Their hit songs “So Cold†and “Sooner or Later†off 2004’s We Are Not Alone album both soared to number 2 on the U.S. Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in Billboard Magazine, and their next album Phobia produced another number 2 song in “The Diary of Jane†and a much-coveted number one spot with “Breath.†Now with the new album Dear Agony, they’re set to attack the charts again. Guitarist Ben Burnley notes, “We’ve been together 8 years, which is like 20 years these days. We’ve honed our sound and focus. Being on the road, you become a better musician, and the more music you listen to and the more experiences and people you’re exposed to, the more complicated you become, the more complicated your music can become.†Breaking Benjamin consists of Burnley, guitarist Aaron Fink, bassist Mark James, and drummer Chad Szeliga.

Dear Agony, produced by David Bendeth (who also produced the band’s last two albums), sold 134,489 copies in its first week (a first week career high for the band) and was the #1 album on iTunes.
