Vonnegutt is a band that draws inspiration from several musical genres. And as a result of being co-signed to Big Boi and Manchester Orchestra’s record labels, they are constantly surrounded by different sounds and styles of music. Vonnegutt’s upcoming mixtape, Free.99, gives fans a little taste of what a day in the life of Vonnegutt sounds like and is sure to surprise many along the way. It wouldn’t be any fun if we gave away ALL the guest appearances and collaborations quite yet, but a couple of friends that will be on Free.99 are Big Boi, Will Pugh (of Cartel), Cutty Cartel, Aleon Craft, Sugar Tongue Slim, Tony Williams, Shanell, and Andy Hull (of Manchester Orchestra). Free.99 will be all new collaborations and three new original Vonnegutt songs, including “Going Home,” which is available via the link below. Vonnegutt released their debut EP, The Appetizer EP, two months ago with their debut LP, Falling Up The Stairs, to see release in 2011.

Runner Runner, a dynamic young band hailing from punk mecca Huntington Beach, CA, have just been signed to the new partnership of EMI Music’s Capitol Records, Clear Entertainment/C.E. Music (a new label formed by late night host, David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants Inc.), and Jack Ponti’s MRV label. The band, frontman Ryan Ogren, guitarist Nick Bailey, guitarist Peter Munters, bassist Jon Berry and drummer James Ulrich, have over eight-million plays on their MySpace, were named a 2009 Band to Watch by Alternative Press, and have played shows with the likes of Angels & Airwaves, Fall Out Boy and All Time Low.

Veterans to the music industry, bassist Berry was a founding member of the SoCal pop-punk band, Rufio, Ogren was the vocalist/guitarist for New Jersey’s Don’t Look Down, and Munters, Bailey & Ulrich were members of OC’s Over It. They all came together in 2008 to create what is now Runner Runner. The five members are a combination of skillful songwriting and musicianship, punk-infused intensity and songs with humongous hooks with tremendous potential.

The band is currently recording their self-titled debut album in Los Angeles with producer Dave Darling (Stray Cats, Brian Setzer, Soulive), and plan to tour extensively after their album drops later this summer. Their first single, “So Obvious,” will be released to radio on June 15th, and you can take a listen right here. Get to know Runner Runner a little better by checking out their YouTube, Facebook or official site, and to see a list of their tour dates, head to their MySpace.

If you’ve ever attended a full show at School of Rock, you know that you’re walking into a suana. Making your way through a bunch of kids that aren’t old enough to drive yet, you also become somewhat resentful of the venue’s lack of a bar. Regardless, October 24th would be a momentous occasion as it marked Cartel‘s return to the School of Rock in South Hackensack, NJ where the band had last played four years earlier when the venue opened. Currently promoting their new album Cycles, Cartel would play to a nearly sold out crowd mixed with teens, their moms, a few industry execs and this reviewer. Opening with “Let’s Go”, the first single off of Cycles, Cartel were ferocious and energetic despite frontman Will Pugh seemingly slightly ill. The band seemed to be completely rejuvenated and recovered from the under-appreciated self-titled album they recorded in the MTV/Dr Pepper bubble-dome in 2007. In fact, nearly all of Cartel‘s setlist (see below) was comprised of songs off of the new album as well as the band’s debut, Chroma. The audience seemed most accepting of the opening song, “Faster Ride” and “27 Steps” from Cycles which easily could’ve been songs leftover from the Chroma sessions. Despite the return to its traditional sound on those songs, the rest of Cartel‘s new material seemed to fall flat on the audience. Even the supercharged rollercoaster “Deep South” didn’t seem to move the young crowd despite it being the song the band rocked out the hardest to. Maybe the audience was anxious that the band might not play their biggest hit to date, “Honestly.” Luckily for them, Cartel saved it for the encore.

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hanging out with the guys from Cartel before their show at the School of Rock in South Hackensack, NJ. Check out our interview with them below as we discussed the whole Dr. Pepper/bubble event, being on a new label, their love of Nascar, and much much more. Everyone was around for the interview except Nic who was working on his guitar for most of it but returned near the end. You’ll probably hear Kevin the most on here. Anyways, listen below:

1. You guys were on Epic for your first two full albums. Now you’re on Wind-Up. Why the change?

2. Any backlash to being on the same label as Creed?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/cartelinterview2.mp3[/mp3]

6. Any unusual musical guilty pleasures? Would you ever work with any of them?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/cartelinterview6.mp3[/mp3]

7. Having been a band for almost forever, do you guys ever get annoyed or bored with each other?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/cartelinterview7.mp3[/mp3]

8. Pull pranks on each other on the bus?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/cartelinterview8.mp3[/mp3]

9. Halloween’s coming up (this was done before Halloween). What age were you when you stopped trick or treating?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/cartelinterview9.mp3[/mp3]

10. Any newer bands you’re into?
