Back in December, Chevelle released their latest record ‘Hats Off to the Bull’ to overwhelmingly positive critical reception. On February 29th, they brought the ‘Hats Off to the Bull tour’ to New York’s legendary (and intimate) Irving Plaza to deliver an energetic 90 minute set to a sold out crowd that touched upon nearly every release in the band’s 13 year discography.

Directly supporting Chevelle on this tour are the Californian rock band known at Middle Class Rut, and they did an excellent job at warming up the crowd. For those unfamiliar, Middle Class Rut is a duo consisting of vocalist and guitarist Zack Lopez and vocalist and drummer Sean Stockham. They played an eight song set which was compromised almost entirely of tracks from their 2010 full length album ‘No Name No Color’. The band frequently interacted with the crowd, at one point Lopez noted that the band found a lyric book in the venue and asked if it belonged to anyone there. Of course no fewer than 50 people raised their hands to which Lopez responded “Oh you all carry lyrics books on you huh?” and Stockham quipped that they would have it at their merch table and someone would have to recite one of the poems from the book in order to claim it. Lopez then joked around that maybe they would sell it for $100 at the merch table instead. The band closed their set with two of my favorite tracks from their album – ‘Busy Bein’ Born’ and ‘USA’ which was introduced as a song about “another USA, so don’t get offended”.

After a 30 minute wait, Chevelle took the stage next to play 17 heavy hitting songs that encompassed all their albums except for their debut. While hearing their albums is an enjoyable experience on its own, it’s hard to put into words just how impressive it is to see a three people recreate the massive sound that is Chevelle live. Credit should be given to bassist Dean Bernardini, drummer Sam Loeffler and especially guitarist and vocalist Pete Loeffler, whose voice sounds as great as it ever has, for putting out as much noise as they do between the three of them.

While the band is touring in support of the aforementioned ‘Hats Off to the Bull’, they should also be given credit for not forcing it down the audience’s throat. Instead, they played 4 choice cuts from the album including singles “Face to the Floor” and the title track and kept to their tried and true hits. Standouts included all the songs that are to be expected such as ‘Another Know It All’, ‘Jars’, ‘Send The Pain Below’, ‘The Clincher’, and ‘The Red’. Indeed, it’s hard to even list standouts from the night because every song was great and the crowd ate it all up. Pete kept the banter to a minimum throughout the night in order to play as many songs as possible in their 90 minute slot, though he frequently noted how happy he was to be in New York. Several times throughout their set, he noticed that the crowd looked hot and sweaty and asked if anyone wanted water before tossing an open bottle into the crowd to cool them off.
Despite Chevelle not being in the forefront of rock like they used to be (in no small part thanks to the complete non-existence of rock radio in New York), the band continues to make great music and put on a killer live show. As a consequence of this, the band are able to play more intimate venues than before, something that even a minor fan of their work should take advantage of.

JANUS – singer David Scotney, guitarist Mike Tyranski, bassist Alan Quitman and drummer Johnny Salazar – experienced great success with their 2009 debut album, Red Right Return, but the band’s new album, NOX AERIS, reveals how far they’ve come.

That musical revelation is the self-produced NOX AERIS, which drops March 27 on REALID Records (through Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group). The first single, “Stains,” is already getting spins at WIIL (Chicago), KPNT (St. Louis), WBUZ (Nashville), WJJO (Madison), WWBN (Flint), KHTQ (Spokane), as well as SiriusXM’s “Octane” and “Hard Drive XL.” Early feedback includes Zigz at WBUZ (Nashville), who says, “If ‘Stains’ is a taste of things to come… then 2012 is going to be a great year for Janus. They’ve hit a new level with ‘Stains’…this track is righteous.”

“Stains” explores what can happen when you don’t follow your heart, the marks left on your spirit when you become someone you’re not. “It embodies what I was trying to say on the record,” says singer David Scotney, “it’s a dark point of view, but represents a cathartic process of self-healing.”

In 2012 touring news, the band’s first round of tour dates will be with Chevelle and Middle Class Rut starting February 24 in Grand Rapids, MI. Additional dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

The record’s title, which is Latin for “night air,” comes from the 14th Century, a period where a third of the European population was killed off by the plague. Then, people believed going outdoors at night would cause them to succumb to the Black Death. While writing NOX AERIS, JANUS found this idea to be an apt metaphor for their own journey, preconceived notions of their own being flipped around as they became a bigger, more established band since the release of Red Right Return. NOX AERIS reveals who JANUS is and what they’ve gone through.

Red Right Return came out in September 2009 on REALID Records and spawned the Top 10 Active Rock hit, “Eyesore.” They spent months on the road touring with Chevelle, Sick Puppies, Sevendust, Pop Evil, Halestorm, Five Finger Death Punch, and Alice In Chains. JANUS also sold-out numerous headlining shows of their own, appeared on MTV’s “Headbangers Ball” and performed in the biggest rock festivals in the U.S., including Rock On The Range. raved about the album: “There are a few bands, given the opportunity, could take the radio by storm. JANUS is a perfect example of this type of band. If they were given the chance, and played on some larger radio stations alongside all of our alternative ‘favorites’ (sound-alikes), they could earn themselves hordes of fans.” While hailed in a 9 out of 10 album review: “Brilliant on many levels and impeccably engineered and produced to perfection.”

CHEVELLE–PETE LOEFFLER (Guitars, Vocals), SAM LOEFFLER (Drums) and DEAN BERNARDINI (Bass, Vocals)—recently released their new album HATS OFF TO THE BULL (Epic Records) which debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #19 and is being hailed as one of their finest albums. Its success is being propelled by the explosive first single “Face To The Floor.” With its hypnotic and grinding riff, the song rails against the corporate corruption of Bernie Madoff and Wall Street and is a testament to the band’s songwriting prowess and eternal knack for a hit. “Face To The Floor” continues its reign at the #1 spot at Active Rock radio and is also Top 10 at Modern Rock.

CHEVELLE exclusively premiered the video for “Face To The Floor” last month (12/23) on The striking performance-based video–directed by P.R. Brown (Mötley Crüe, Smashing Pumpkins, Slipknot)–mirrors the chaotic and economic state currently facing millions of Americans. Watch the clip here:

Chicago alternative hard rock trio CHEVELLE is celebrating the release of their sixth album HATS OFF TO THE BULL, today, Tuesday, December 6 via Epic Records. HATS OFF TO THE BULL is charging full-speed ahead and garnering early critical acclaim (see soundbites below). The album’s first single “Face To The Floor” continues its ascent at radio nationwide reaching #1 at Active Rock and Top 10 at Altternative Rock radio. BILLBOARD magazine stated, “’Face To The Floor’ delivers nearly four minutes of the cathartic alt-metal fans have come to expect from Chevelle. This time, though, the band wants to stir their minds, not just tempers.” (11/19/11)

Check out more critical soundbites for CHEVELLE:

“On their sixth album Hats Off To The Bull, Chicago’s thrash ‘n’ burn trio Chevelle gets high marks for the track ‘Face To The Floor,’ a powerhouse head-banger that would make the Occupy Wall Street protesters mosh without pepper-spray. The tune’s loopy melody has a very Metallica feel, while the lyrics spit in the face of Wall Street greed, corporate corruption and power-hungry robber barons ready to stomp the little guy. The rich may get richer, but the poor get to rock out.”

–Dan Aquilante, NEW YORK POST, 12/6/11

“On their sixth full-length album, ‘hard alternative’ band Chevelle continue in the vein they always have: taut, intelligent, multi-layered rock led by Pete Loeffler’s trenchant vocals. On Hats Off To The Bull, however, The Chicago trio swings for the fences in more ways than one. Loeffler’s sense of outrage on this album is incandescent at times. First single ‘Face to the Floor’ is an anti-corruption anthem fueled in particular by the Madoff scandal and other Wall Street shenanigans. ‘Clones,’ an even more incensed track, flat out rocks and could easily have been the first single.”

–Bob Doershuk, DRUM!, January 2012

“Hats Off To The Bull is pure genius, and possibly their most ambitious work to date. Lead singer Pete Loeffler’s dark and deep lyrics are brilliant; each song is so personal, almost as if he is sharing his weaknesses, and exposing the demons that he wrestles with on a daily basis to the world. Musically, Chevelle has taken a grand leap forward with this album. They experiment with instruments and traverse sonic landscapes that they have never traveled before… This album brilliantly combines the sound that has earned Chevelle not only plenty of radio play, but also a massive fanbase, and new and unexplored sounds that are sure to impress even the most hard nosed critics. With Hats Off To The Bull, Chevelle have once again proven that they are the kings of hard rock.”

– Caleb Hicks, AUDIOPINIONS.NET, 12/1/11

“…this new album has made a place for itself on my list of top 10 best rock albums of the year…Hats Off to the Bull is easily Chevelle’s best work to date…It puts audiences straight on their feet at the start of the album with its anthemic song about the corporate greed of Wall Street and Bernie Madoff, ‘Face to the Floor’, and proceeds to take them on a full throttle adrenaline rush from then on.”

– Phillip Sayblack, WNCT, 12/5/11

“Chevelle are a band that feels organic and honed where other bands feel stagnant and dragged down. It’s the heaviness that fuels Chevelle… reaching a fist-to-face intensity…’The Meddler’ is one of the best on the album. Its siren-like guitar climbs are backed by a powerful stomp of a beat, with Sam Loeffler keep the pace with a colossal motion and some of the most pounding drumlines ever heard in the band’s extensive catalog…What makes the lyrical content in Hats Off to the Bull so poignant is that they’ve made anger beautiful. They’ve made the crunch of guitars and fissure strikes of drum beats into something portrait-esque and well worth listening to… brings back why the band has been so memorable over the years… a fine throwback to one of modern radio rock’s most iconic groups.”

Chicago alternative hard rock trio CHEVELLE is getting ready to release their sixth album HATS OFF TO THE BULL, Tuesday, December 6 via Epic Records. In anticipation of the LP, CHEVELLE–PETE LOEFFLER (Guitars, Vocals), SAM LOEFFLER (Drums) and DEAN BERNARDINI (Bass, Vocals)–has announced a new string of dates (see them below)

On Thursday, Dec. 8 CHEVELLE will perform live on ABC TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (12 ET/PT/11pmCT). On Saturday, Dec. 10 the group will join Blink-182, Incubus, Bush, Social Distortion, New Found Glory, 311 and Young the Giant for the sold-out 22nd annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas show. They’ll follow up the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas gig with a stop by the nationally syndicated radio show Rockline on Monday, Dec. 12.

HATS OFF TO THE BULL is charging full-speed ahead with the release of the album’s first single “Face To The Floor” which continues its ascent at radio nationwide. As soon as the explosive track hit airwaves, it became the #1 most added record at Active and Alternative Rock radio, a testament to the band’s songwriting prowess and eternal knack for a hit. Billboard magazine singled out the song which currently sits atop the Active Rock chart at #1,

“Over a chugging, post-grunge guitar riff, singer Pete Loeffler proclaims, ‘To Pick up the tip doesn’t mean a lot/Fiddle inside your drawers/If we own the night then spread it out/Or pack up without a clue.’ A succinct survey of how most of the nation is smarting from hard economic times–complete with a Bernie Madoff reference in the lyrics–‘Floor’ delivers nearly four minutes of the cathartic alt-metal fans have come to expect from Chevelle. This time, though, the band wants to stir their minds, not just their tempers.” –Michael B. Depland

Most artists with over 12 years in the music industry lose their initial fire, but CHEVELLE burn brighter than ever on HATS OFF TO THE BULL. Rather than simply subscribing to a tried-and-true formula, they–alongside producer Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Coheed and Cambria)–made a conscious effort to incorporate new sounds and textures into their patented airtight anthems. As a result, the group composed its most infectious, intriguing, and impressive offering to date.

“We’re evolving,” declares PETE LOEFFLER. “The album is different, and it’s going to take some people by surprise.” “Face to the Floor”–a song that taps right into the current state of the public’s growing mistrust of economic systems–is emblematic of the band’s progression. A grinding riff snakes through a hypnotic haze as PETE rails against the corporate corruption of Bernie Madoff on one of the most explosive hooks of the band’s career.

Fans can also pre-order the album via their website at or iTunes at Those that purchase on iTunes also get an extra, exclusive track titled “Indifference.” Signed limited edition laminates and album downloads are also available via the band’s official store:
