Mumford & Sons 10/21 White Rabbit CMJ

October 26, 2009 drainu182 0

One of the best parts about CMJ are these pop-up/makeshift shows. Glassnote Records set up a pop-up performance for Mumford & Sons at the bar White Rabbit but it was in one of the lounge rooms, not in the bar area. These guys are amazingly good. We don’t like folk rock but we love Mumford & Sons. It’s rare that we like these types of love songs from England but we love this band. Check out a few photos …

Clare and The Reasons 10/20 Mercury Lounge CMJ

October 25, 2009 drainu182 0

It’s hard not to fall in love with Clare Manchon. She looks like a beautiful housewife who stepped away from cleaning to sing a few songs for everyone before going back to her chores. Perhaps it’s because she’s written most of the songs with her husband Olivier. Together (with the help of Bob Hart and Jon Cottle), they comprise the Brooklyn indie rock quartet Clare and The Reasons. They played Mercury Lounge with labelmate Josh Mease on …

Care Bears On Fire Bowery Ballroom CMJ 10/20

October 25, 2009 drainu182 0

Care Bears On Fire played the first night of CMJ at Bowery Ballroom. Though the girls have a lot of pop, there’s just not enough punch. I’m not sure if they’ll ever be taken seriously as a pop/punk/rock band or just as a kiddie band. I mean, they did make it onto Letterman recently. And they’re a hell of a lot better than Kittie ever was (Sorry Spiewak). Anyways, here’s a couple of photos below (thanks to Meimi Yeung).

Julia Haltigan & The Hooligans @The Living Room Paste Magazine CMJ 10/20

October 25, 2009 drainu182 0

Any evidence that Paste Magazine is in trouble was not present at their really chill CMJ showcases this week at The Living Room. Free beer, cocktails, snacks (thank you!) accompanied all the great music. On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of catching Julia Haltigan. This girl has a huge voice, reminiscent of Loretta Lynne (and that’s not even our favorite type of music but we loved Julia!). Unfortunately, due to this being one of the first official CMJ performances of …

The Temper Trap Music Hall of Williamsburg 10/22 CMJ

October 24, 2009 drainu182 0

The Temper Trap have been all over the place this week. They played Thursday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Mumford & Sons (MUST SEE BAND). This is our first time catching The Temper Trap and we’re impressed. They’re kind of a softer/less dancier version of Bloc Party. Their best song is “Sweet Disposition” and it’s one of those songs that you know that you’ll hear in a movie or tv show during a character’s love scene. The Australian …

Toronto-based group Little Girls (Josh McIntyre and co.) are releasing the two songs that bookend their debut full-length, Concepts, as they make a pit stop at CMJ on their North American tour with Japandroids, Monotonix, You Say Party! We Say Die! Wavves, and Nurses among others. The first is a haunting and painstakingly hand-colored video for intro track, “Youth Tunes“, directed by Felix Kalmenson, and the second is a free mp3 download of the last track “Growing,” a …

SAINT MOTEL, an emerging, indie-pop band from Los Angeles, CA, discovered their van had been robbed Sunday afternoon, October 18, 2009 between 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM while on tour in Chicago, IL. The thieves smashed one of the van’s windows and stole an electric bass, an acoustic guitar, iPods, a laptop, food and one of the member’s dirty laundry, while the band was taping an in-studio performance at JBTV.

Fortunately, this isn’t a major setback for Saint Motel …
