The band is touring in support of its new RIAA-certified Platinum record, Mylo Xyloto, which has scored the most No. 1 rankings of any album this year worldwide, topping the charts in 34 countries to date. Mylo Xyloto’s first two singles have received GRAMMY nominations – “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song, and the Gold-certified “Paradise” for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Coldplay is nominated for a People’s Choice Award in the Favorite Band category.

“Coldplay understands how to make a shared moment from a song…their respect for their fans is obvious,” said The Times of London in a review of the band’s Glastonbury set. Coldplay’s headline appearance at Lollapalooza before the release of Mylo Xyloto prompted Time Out Chicago to observe: “I’ve never seen a band’s unheard material go over so well” while USA Today noted: “Standouts included Charlie Brown with Jonny Buckland’s sticky, uplifting guitar work, and the soft, romantic Us Against The World, which featured drummer Will Champion on piano and backing vocals.”

“Charlie Brown,” Coldplay’s next single, will go to radio later this month. You can check out the band performing “Charlie Brown” at summer festivals in this new live video, directed by Mat Whitecross and Mark Rowbotham:

“Austin City Limits,” the world’s longest-running live music television series, will ring in the New Year with a performance by Coldplay. Mylo Xyloto (Capitol Records) is Coldplay’s third consecutive studio album to debut atop both The Billboard 200 and the U.K. album chart. It also hit the No. 1 spot in all 35 iTunes stores around the world, breaking the record for the highest number of download sales in one week – a milestone Coldplay first achieved with the release of Viva La Vida, which was the No. 1 selling album worldwide of 2008, according to IFPI.

Coldplay – comprising Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Chris Martin – has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and won numerous awards, including seven GRAMMY® Awards, six Brit Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards.

On September 20th, Coldplay brought their colorful stage setup to New York to perform a special Live on Letterman webcast show from the Ed Sullivan Theater, and a few hundred lucky fans were able to attend the show. Kicking things off with two new and unreleased songs from upcoming album “Mylo Xyloto” (“Mylo Xyloto” and “Hurts Like Heaven”) as they did is a risky move for any band, but the audience enjoyed it, and it also allowed for the band show off their dazzling lights and technicolor lasers. These lasers and rainbow lights quickly made way for bright yellow lights to bathe the entire stage as the band went into mega-hit “Yellow” from their debut album “Parachutes”. Continuing the old hits was the stomping “In My Place” from 2002s “A Rush Of Blood To The Head”, which singer Chris Martin asked for a bit of help from the audience to sing the booming “YEAH” of the chorus. As he usually does during this song (most likely because of it’s collaborative nature), singer Martin brought guitarist Jonny Buckland to the center of the stage, calling him his “best friend”.

At this point in the show, Martin commented on how the crowd shouldn’t be nervous about being shown on the live stream, ensuring them that the camera made everyone look skinnier and that it also makes all haircuts look planned. Martin, pointing to his own head, added that “even this receding thing” looked good on the camera. The band then went into two more songs from the upcoming album – Major Minus and the newest single Paradise. The latter’s sweeping anthem of a chorus “Para-Para-Paradise” and the numerous “Woah-Oh-Oh”‘s had the audience quickly singing along at the top of their lungs, even if they hadn’t heard the song before. Drummer Will Champion then took his spot behind the timpani and church bell, signifying the start of crowd favorite “Viva La Vida”, much to the crowd’s delight. Arguably the best storytelling that Martin has ever written, the audience clapped and danced as Martin ran all over the stage.

Another new song, “Charlie Brown” continued the high energy of the set with it’s upbeat rock tempo. Personal favorite, “The Scientist” brought the pace down, but increased the emotion as a perfect showcase of Martin’s skills not only as a pianist but as a lyricist as well. The unmistakable opening notes of “Clocks brought a rapturous applause from the audience, causing Martin to beam with delight as the crowd jumped up and down the best they could in the area in front of their seats. The painfully gorgeous “Fix You” with it’s deep organ notes would be next, quieting the crowd who still maintained deep interest. This song shines in showcasing Martin’s ability to convey emotion that everyone can relate to through his music, with many in the crowd looking like they were on the verge of tears.

Closing the main set was the lead single from “Mylo Xyloto”, “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”. The keyboard driven upbeat song had the crowd bouncing on their feet and Martin spinning and dancing on stage, that is until he tripped over Buckland’s pedal board and fell. An expert showman, he didn’t miss a single beat as this happened, and didn’t let it affect the performance at all. At the close of the song, the band came together for a bow and quickly slipped off the stage, though it was clear that the crowd would not let them leave without an encore.

Eventually, Martin returned to the stage and apologized for “flugging things up” (he didn’t want to curse on the live stream) explaining that the band hadn’t planned on doing an encore as they had anticipated a much “colder audience” and that they would need 30 seconds to “get their shit together”. When Martin returned with his guitar, it became clear that the amplification wasn’t working on it, and he quickly forgot about not cursing on the live stream. When an audience member suggested that he go off the microphone, Martin obliged, unplugging his guitar and sitting down at the front of the stage to perform an unplugged version of “Us Against The World”, a song which he said he wrote about his band. The band joined in the song about halfway through, with Champion’s singing and the audience applause causing Martin to laugh and pause the song momentarily. A rare moment like this was a real treat for all the fans in attendance, and by the time the song was over, the band had more than delivered on Martin’s earlier promise to have “a connection between band and the audience” by the end of the night.
