There’s one tour that everyone around my age have been buzzing about this summer. Is it Warped? No! Is it Coldplay? Nope! Is it a collection of five bands that we listened to in high school? HELL YES! For one summer only, Lit, Everclear, Gin Blossoms, Marcy Playground and Sugar Ray are all playing together on the Summerland Tour. Even better, Lit released a new album “The View From The Bottom” featuring the single “C’mon” (listen below).

We know that you’re curious to see if these bands still sound as good as they did when you were younger. We’ll let you be the judge. We’re giving away tickets to see the Summerland Tour on Wednesday July 18th at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City!

We know that you’re dying to go to the show so we’re going to make you work a little bit for it. Send us an email (tapcontests at gmail dot com) with your name and tell us about your favorite summer concert you went to while you were in high school.

Take a listen to “C’mon” from Lit below and head over to litband.com to hear more from the new album.

Ed Kowalczyk, legendary lead singer and songwriter of the multi-Platinum rock band Live, is proud to announce the release of his first solo album, Alive, set to be released through RED on July 6. The album was recorded in Austin, TX at Wire Recording Studios with producer CJ Eiriksson (U2, Blue October, Matchbox Twenty) and Kowalczyk’s new band – Ramy Antoun on drums, James Gabbie on lead guitar and Chris Heerlein on bass.

“During the last two years, I found myself at a new level of personal inspiration and creativity. I am so excited that my long time fans, as well as new ones, are about to experience the fruit of my labor of love! This album is a gigantic achievement for me and I couldn’t be more thrilled at the prospect of finally sharing it with the world,” he says.

The 12-song album features Ed Kowalczyk at his best – ferocious yet passionate, while retaining the anthemic and spiritual songwriting he’s always been known for. Fans both old and new will be immediately drawn to the first single “Grace” – a soaring, hard-hitting song destined to be a rock radio staple. Alive also features a songwriting collaboration with friend Chris Daughtry on the driving rock track “Drink (Everlasting Love).”

Along with friends Art Alexakis of Everclear and Leigh Nash of Sixpence None The Richer, Kowalczyk recently completed a series of dates as “Open Wings, Broken Strings,” a tour that he both produced and created. Stripped down, storyteller-like acoustic versions of their music offered the audience a unique, compelling and intimate way to experience the songs they know and love and hear the stories behind them.

Ed Kowalczyk built an impressive résumé with LIVE that includes eight full-length albums, total CD sales exceeding 20 million, a huge international fan base and extensive touring all over the world. LIVE has been one of the most successful and enduring alternative rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s.

A U.S. tour is currently being scheduled and will be announced shortly.

Art Alexakis: father/rocker/political activist/author/screenwriter? Yep! We spoke with Art recently during the middle of Everclear’s winter west coast tour. We talked to Art about Everclear’s new album In A Different Light (iTunes /, Amazon MP3 / CD) which features new renditions of Everclear classics, the band’s changing fanbase, Art developing movie scripts and a book he’s working on (and no, it’s not what you would think!). Check it out below and make sure to go to EverclearOnline.com for more on Art Alexakis and Everclear.

1. In A Different Light features new versions of Everclear songs. Which song has the most significant transformation.
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear1.mp3[/mp3]

2. On this tour, have you been performing these newer arrangements?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear2.mp3[/mp3]

3. Fans reaction to the record been positive?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear3.mp3[/mp3]

4. How has your fanbase changed? Do you think that fans from the mid-late 90s still follow you now?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear4.mp3[/mp3]

5. You’ve had two major lineup changes in the past six years (2003) and this year. Did you feel that with In A
Different Light and the upcoming new studio album that you needed to change who you played with?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear5.mp3[/mp3]

6. Since the version of the band with you and Greg and Craig is the one that’s associated most as Everclear, do you ever think that the three of you will be on stage together again? Art asked us if we had ever been married (NO), if we had an ex-girlfriend that we’d never ever date again (YES).
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear6.mp3[/mp3]

7. What can you tell us about your upcoming studio album next year?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear7.mp3[/mp3]

8. You’ve never been timid with your views on politics whether it be testifying in Congress, representing your city and state at the Democratic National Convention or with your songs like “Jesus Was A Democrat.” Though you’re a busy musician, would you ever consider running for a position in an upcoming election?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear8.mp3[/mp3]

9. You were a late bloomer in terms of getting signed to a major label and having commercial success while also dealing with your own personal turmoil. Was Everclear and making music more about being successful or it being a lifeline because it was what you knew best and how you wanted to make a living?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear9.mp3[/mp3]

10. You’re pretty familiar in film having studied it as a student, done some acting and even directing some music videos. Have you thought about doing a short film for an upcoming Everclear music video or something beyond that?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear10.mp3[/mp3]

11. So writing scripts and pitching them is like part of a new passion for you, almost like when you were writing songs and trying to get signed.
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear11.mp3[/mp3]

12. Has your daughter ever thought about starting a band?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear12.mp3[/mp3]

13. If she did ever decide that she wanted to go into music or the industry, would you encourage or discourage her from doing so?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear13.mp3[/mp3]

14. Are there any newer bands that you like or respect?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear14.mp3[/mp3]

15. What’s the last concert that you went to?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear15.mp3[/mp3]

16. It’s interesting how Guns N Roses exists now.
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear16.mp3[/mp3]

17. You’ve experienced a lot as a person and a musician. Have you ever thought about writing a book about your life?
[mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/everclear17.mp3[/mp3]

18. Even if you don’t write an autobiography, your story comes out in your songs, memoirs, scripts, etc.

The word is out: EVERCLEAR is back, better than ever, and ready to re-connect with their audience. Frontman Art Alexakis has gone back to basics: recruiting a new band, releasing In A Different Light, a new album that reinterprets the Everclear songbook with some fresh surprises, and finally returning to the road, to the delight of fans nationwide.

Alexakis says, “It’s so amazing to see the enthusiasm and intensity of our fans…..not to mention the diversity in age…they range from 15 to 50…it’s great to see kids who were in middle school singing all the words to every song!”

In A Different Light is the band’s first release on record label 429 Records, and, in celebration, finds the band revisiting their past work with refreshed, stripped-down arrangements of some of their best songs. Classics such as “Everything to Everyone,” “Santa Monica,” and “Father of Mine” stand comfortably alongside new tracks “At the End of The Day” and “Here Comes the Darkness.” Like many rock greats before them, Everclear revisits their back pages with ease, intrigue, and a more mature perspective, making for an album that is a listening experience in itself.

With new members, bassist Freddy Herrera, guitarist Johnny Hawthorn, keyboardist Sasha Smith and drummer Jordan Plosky, Alexakis has been performing a slew of intimate tour dates with a rejuvenated Everclear, packing clubs and reconnecting with longtime fans around the country – proving that the band is as vital and needed today as ever before. They’ve also reached out to their audience in a radical move: allowing fans to vote for the tour’s opening bands city-by-city on the internet. The band just completed a successful October run through the East Coast, and will be returning to the West Coast this month with special guest Clayton Senne for a series of dates alongside the fan-selected openers.

Refreshed, revamped, and reinterpreted, Everclear is ringing in a new era in their already storied history, and making strides with both older and newer generations of fans around the country. Don’t miss your chance to see this already legendary re-emergence of an old favorite in a new shape.

Art Alexalis is a pretty cool dude. He might look like a dick but he’s been writing poppy songs about heroin girls and living in Santa Monica for a while so it’s ok when he gets political every once in a while. Here’s Art talking about his controversial song “Jesus Was A Democrat” on his myspace blog:
jesus was a democrat

hey everybody
i just wanted to let you all know that our new single
“jesus was a democrat” will be available here tomorrow
as well as a link to a page on everclearonline.com where you can download the song for free

i am also enclosing the lyrics here on this blog

i just wanted to tell you a little bit about the song…..

i have been wanting to write this song for a long time,
ever since the right wing in this country tried to make the word liberal
a thing of shame and tried to convince america that only conservative “christians”
could make the claim that they had the sole right and ownership of the term”family values”….it made me think of the story of jesus and how his words and ideals snd lessons sounded much more like me and my lefty friends then the right cretins i saw on sunday morning tv……i think if jesus would have been born today….he would be considered a radical a.c.l.u liberal, which in this country,…that means democrat or green party or something left of the dial…..anything BUT a republican

some other reasons i wrote this song

i hate the fact that a lot of conservative people who consider themselves christian
do no act like christians whereas a lot of people who are not christians….do

i am a christian…and i resent the fact that most people who re not christians are afraid of or angry at the perception of what a “christian” is because of the intolerance, hypocrisy, racism, ignorance and hatred of the stereo typical right wing christian…..sarah palin much?

look, if this song offends you….then dont listen to it

if you think i am wrong in my convictions…..and this upsets you
then please dont come to the page

if you do not believe that everclear is the proper forum for political opinons,
then you havent been paying attention
i have been writing political songs from the very beginning…..check out the songs we are putting on the player tomorrow

but if you do believe that i,like you have the right to speak my mind
and respect what i think regardless if you agree or not(which incidentally IS what being an AMERICAN IS ALL ABOUT!!!)….then i urge you to read the lyrics and listen to the song with an open mind….and write me with your feelings about it

we have a video coming out in a couple of weeks…which we will post here
and will be available for down load everywhere

Art Alexalis of Everclear has always been vocal about his stance on politics. With 2008 being an election year, he decided to put out a new song called “Jesus Was A Democrat”. You know you wanna hear it.. or at least pretend that you want to. Download it for free here.

As an aside here, The Audio Perv used to LOVE Everclear. Especially “Sparkle and Fade” and “So Much For The Afterglow”. The late 90s were a good time for The Perv and Everclear. Unfortunately, Art didn’t write as many hits on the next few albums and the bassist and drummer left. The Perv still has a South Park type tshirt of the band. Oh wait, here it is. The thing is, the band was never super great live. And unfortunately, they sound worse now. The Perv saw the band play WMMR’s 40th Anniversary show in Camden/Philly and they were dreadful. Gotta go look for that shirt now.
