Freelance Whales’ song “Generator First Floor”, from their debut LP Weathervanes on Mom + Pop / Frenchkiss Records, is featured in the new Starbucks espresso commercial now airing nationally. The commercial is part of Starbucks new ad campaign to celebrate their 40th Anniversary and the debut of their new logo.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, iTunes is offering a free download of the track at www.itunes.com/freelancewhales. The track will be free on iTunes until March 29th.

While this is not the first use of Freelance Whales’ music in a commercial, it’s certainly their highest profile to date. They are one of 2010’s breakout indie acts and have had music featured previously on Grey’s Anatomy, Bored To Death, Chuck, My Life As Liz, among others. Their debut album, Weathervanes, has received press accolades from NME, Paste, Stereogum & Spin Magazine etc.

Freelance Whales are releasing an extended edition deluxe version of Weathervanes exclusively on iTunes on April 5th. They will also be on a national tour with Foals and The Naked & Famous April 10th through May 8th.

Green Label Sound today releases, “Day Off,” its second exclusive single by New York City’s Freelance Whales. “Day Off” is the companion to the band’s previous single “Enzymes” – both of which head down the path of the band’s new, more mature and introspective direction. The band refers to the tracks as “twin siblings that don’t look too much alike.” Keyboardist/vocalist, Chuck Chris, who penned “Day Off,” describes them as “sounding a lot bigger and more live” than previous works. Lead singer Judah Dadone says that “Day Off” and “Enzymes” are “a deliberate reaction to road life. It’s about wanting to come home. It’s about trying to reclaim your own possessions and trying to reclaim the people in your life that you love.”

As with “Enzymes,” “Day Off” was recorded at Emery Dobyns’ intimate studio in Weehauken, NJ. Freelance Whales were originally attracted to Dobyns as a producer because of his excellent work with Battles and Antony And The Johnsons. The band describes Dobyns as “talented and hugely versatile.” Both singles are available for free download at GreenLabelSound.com now.

Green Label Sound, Mountain Dew’s exclusive singles label, is a record label designed to elevate and empower independent artists. To date, Green Label Sound has released singles by Wavves, Neon Indian, Matt and Kim, Holy Ghost!, Chromeo, The Cool Kids, Solid Gold, U-N-I, Flosstradamus and Caroline Polachek, Solid Gold, Theophilus London and Kuroma.

Green Label Sound today releases the music video for “Enzymes” by Freelance Whales. “Enzymes” is also available as a free download exclusively at http://www.greenlabelsound.com.

The track, ‘is a little more abstract lyrically than what we’ve done and so the video kind of matches that’, notes Judah Dadone of Freelance Whales who also adds that this is the only time in his life he’ll ever be wearing a cat suit. Chuck Criss, Doris Cellar, Kevin Read and Jake Hyman join in the split performance/narrative video.

Chunwoo Kae and Ryan Demler of Neue Films directed the video for “Enzymes.” Known for their work with Surfer Blood, amongst others, the band was attracted to their unique style. Chunwoo used black as a transition element to seamlessly cut between the performance and the narrative storyline, thus creating a surreal, dream-like experience. Hyman adds it is, “definitely [their] fanciest video to date”.
