Fun Fun Fun Fest Review and Photos

November 13, 2012 The Audio Perv 2

DAY 1

Reverend Run doesn’t just ask anyone how their doing, and when he asks a crowd as big as the on awaiting his performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest how they’re doing, your response better be “real good.” More than 10 years after the still unsolved murder of their DJ “Jam-Master”Jay Mizell, Fun Fun Fun Fest was thanked on stage by Run for bringing back together the dynamic stylings of Run-DMC, …

Okkervil River Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 1

November 27, 2011 drainu182 0

By Jennifer Murtha

With downtown serving as a scenic backdrop, Okkervil River brought a serious rock show to the banks of Auditorium Shores. The rather large band fronted by Will Sheff recently released I Am Very Far and have been touring since its release in May. Not a stranger to Fun Fun Fun Fest (Okkervil River played in 2007), Sheff took charge of the stage thrashing about and swinging around his acoustic guitar. He was so into it at one …

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 1

November 20, 2011 drainu182 0

by Jennifer Murtha

It was no surprise that hometown rockers Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears would be playing the main stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest. A wonderful mix of rock, blues and soul, the band truly stands out as something different than a lot of bands out there today. This year, their album Scandalous was released and the band embarked on an extensive tour schedule including large festivals like Bonnaroo, Outside Lands Music and Art Festival and Coachella …

YACHT Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 1

Taking the stage by storm YACHT was the first band we caught at Fun Fun Fun Fest and man did they set the bar high. Starting off as a solo project for Jona Bechtolt, YACHT now also includes Claire L. Evans and a few touring musicians. Evans took the stage in an all-white ensemble bringing a surge of energy that could be felt immediately. The rest of her bandmates followed and we were all …

Baths Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 3

November 20, 2011 drainu182 0

By Jennifer Murtha

Will Wiesenfeld better known Baths brought his layered sounds to Fun Fun Fun Fest. Adding vocals on top of a weird mixed of samples and sound effects, Wiesenfeld seemed almost excited to be at the show as the people at the barricade. Often compared to Toro Y Moi, he recorded his debut album in his bedroom. Furiously moving from his Apple laptop to the mic then dipping up and down from the table creating one of the …

Architecture in Helsinki Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 3

Australia synth-rockers Architecture in Helsinki quickly danced their way into one of my new bands I became a fan of after discovering at Fun Fun Fun Fest this year. Lead by the talented and energetic Cameron Bird got everyone in the crowd even in the photo pit moving to the music. Coming back after line-up shuffle to record Moment Bends, the band has been touring since it’s release in the US in May.

Austra Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 3

An unexpected musical discovery came from Austra on Sunday. Katie Stelmanis voice is amazingly strong and smooth guiding you through each melody. Sharing the stage with two other vocalists, they created a soothing ambiance. The theatrics and costumes of all women added to the intensity of each song creating a strong yet emotional trance…you just could not look away. Packed in the photo pit for only one song it would have been nice to shoot longer but …

Blonde Redhead Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 3

Blonde Redhead ended the weekend for me at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Falling in love with them a few years back at the Austin City Limits Music festival, I’d been looking forward to photographing them all weekend. Kazu Makino smoothy shuffled across the stage as she sang, barely making contact with the crowd. Twins Amedeo and Simone Pace constantly share glances on the darkly lit stage. Sounding amazing, they launched into a few personal favorites from 23 …

Hum Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 3

November 20, 2011 drainu182 0

Midwest rockers Hum played a headlining spot on the last night of Fun Fun Fun Fest. Occasionally reuniting since officially breaking up in 2000, the band’s lineup has changed over the years but their sound remains solid. Described as noise rock or space rock they haven’t released an album since 1998 but their fan base is still strong.

Ra Ra Riot Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 2

New York indie rockers and one of my personal favs, Ra Ra Riot reminded all of us that sometimes rock music can use a little cello and violin. Vocalist Wes Miles always blows me away live with the quality and perfection that matches the vocals he recorded on both their albums. Playing a great mix of favorites from their first album The Rhumb Line to newer tracks from the Orchard, the energy of the whole band is …
