Willamette Week is thrilled to announce the lineup for MusicfestNW 2012, now in its 12th year of showcasing the finest in national and regional music in one of the most compelling urban areas in the country.

MusicfestNW is once again returning to the historic Pioneer Courthouse Square—Portland’s civic living room—for three picturesque outdoor headlining performances at Levi’s Pioneer Stage headlined by shoegazing alternative rockers Silversun Pickups (Sunday, Sept. 9), mashup superstar Girl Talk (Saturday, Sept. 8), and the world music-tinged indie folk of Beirut (Friday, Sept. 7).

Beyond the Square, MusicfestNW will once again take over the city of Portland for five days, with 150 bands playing at 16 clubs all over the city. On Wednesday, Sept. 5, electropop upstarts Passion Pit headline the Crystal Ballroom (the band also plays the next night) and reunited post-hardcore titans Hot Snakes play the Roseland Theater. Critics’ darlings Ceremony, Julia Holter, Lightning Bolt, The Men, Trust, and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart will all be performing special sets of over the September weekend. The festival also features alt-country act Old 97’s playing their seminal record Too Far to Care front-to-back, the beautiful folk tunes of The Tallest Man on Earth, local atmospheric rockers The Helio Sequence, rising hip-hop phenoms Danny Brown and Yelawolf, A-Trak DJing on the Nike Sportswear stage, and the debut of the Red Bull Common Thread series featuring guitar heroes Dinosaur Jr. with sets from the bands’ two offshoots, Sebadoh and J. Mascis.

Willamette Week is also proud to announce the debut of its very own tech conference to coincide with MusicfestNW. Portland has a rich and underrated tech scene, and in its first year, Portland Digital eXperience (PDX) will extend the MusicfestNW beyond music to embrace the technology and startup community by featuring conversations with leading thinkers, both local and from outside Portland. The event, held September 6-8, will focus on individuals who exemplify an “attention to detail, creativity, and the craft of building compelling experiences.” Among the confirmed speakers are Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co., Evan Doll of Flipboard, James Keller of Walmart Labs, and Chris Teso of Chirpify.

Previous MFNW performances include: The National, The Decemberists, Smashing Pumpkins, Modest Mouse, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, Explosions in the Sky, Sunny Day Real Estate, Spoon, Iron & Wine, M. Ward, Built to Spill, Arctic Monkeys, Cat Power, Panda Bear, Black Lips, Band of Horses and The Silver Jews.

Festival wristbands and tickets for shows at Pioneer Courthouse Square, Crystal Ballroom, Roseland Theater, and Aladdin Theater go on sale on Friday, June 1 via Cascade Tickets. Festival wristbands are on sale at two price points:

- $125 for an all-inclusive wristband that gets you into all three outdoor shows and the rest of the five-day festival.

- $75 for a ticket to one of the three outdoor shows (Silversun Pickups, Girl Talk, or Beirut) and a wristband for admission to the rest of the festival.

Critically acclaimed mash-up/remix artist Girl Talk is the first Le Plur act announced for the 2011 THE VOODOO EXPERIENCE PRESENTED BY STEPHEN REHAGE. Girl Talk joins previously announced headliner Soundgarden–in the band’s only 2011 festival appearance–for the annual Halloween weekend (Friday, October 28, Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30) musical celebration in New Orleans’ City Park. These acts are among the first to be announced for the VOODOO EXPERIENCE 2011 line-up. Line-up additions will be announced daily via ongoing rolling announcements on the VOODOO website, free VOODOO apps, email blasts and social networks.

VOODOO’s annual musical celebration is on display through its three unique performance areas: Le Plur, VOODOO’s dance space–dormant since 2004–which celebrates an amazing list of electronic talent from around the world; Le Ritual where the two main stages worship the music of the world’s most renowned artists; and Le Flambeau’s two performance spots (Preservation Hall Tent and the WWOZ Stage) which honor the roots and history of New Orleans music and its inspiration on others.

Each of VOODOO’s individual performance areas is enhanced by the use of interactive art set amid City Park’s lush lagoons, bayous and one of the largest collections of mature oak trees in the world. In 2010, Le Plur–set adjacent to one of the park’s lagoons–was highlighted by appearances from deadmau5, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Die Antwoord, the Crystal Method, Kaskade and Swiss Chriss, among others. Girl Talk’s trademark high energy show, combined with Le Plur’s unique setting, promises to make this one of Girl Talk’s most memorable festival performances.

When asked how he feels performing in New Orleans over Halloween weekend may impact the show, Girl Talk responded that he will likely have a “haunted laptop.”

Tickets for the 2011 VOODOO are available now via www.thevoodooexperience.com

Oxford Mississippi native Deepak Mantena of creative pop-project Junk Culture developed the sound for his newest release, Summer Friends, from a lifetime collection of sounds he’d captured on a handheld recorder. Drawing on inspiration he found in the vibrant harmonies, psychedelic noises and dance rhythms that saturated his environment, he created alluring melodies using guitar, keyboard, and percussion and topped them off with choruses of his own explosive vocals. Experimenting with recording and sampling the symphony of sounds from his everyday life left him filled with a sense of freedom and a revived faith in the process of making music; the warm euphoric tunes he emerged with reflect a compelling range of influences that include everything from west-coast style pop to hip-hop mash-ups and raw punk-informed electronic dance tunes.

MP3: “Weird Teenage Vibes”

In 2009, Junk Culture joined the ranks of Girl Talk, Steinski and The Bran Flakes when Deepak signed with indie label Illegal Art to release his debut, West Coast. While touring in support of the release, he collaborated with his brother Nitin, who played drums for the band’s dynamic live performances. Junk Culture’s visceral live shows involve the siblings jamming to a tight string of sequences, which include sampled patterns and Deepak’s singing, along with his own visuals which include colorful and dreamy segments along with clips of everything from skate and surf videos to fragments of vintage films.

MP3: “Summer Friends”

Junk Culture’s newest release Summer Friends reflects Deepak’s gift for finding meaning in a diary of recordings and transmitting a celebration of the spirit. With influences that range from Caribou, Animal Collective and The Beach Boys, to MF Doom and Fennesz, his new songs have transformed significantly from his last record. With a cleaner and simpler pop tone, the recorded sound is stripped down to highlight its most powerful essentials with the resulting tracks relying more fully on Deepak’s bold, enigmatic vocals. The outcome is a thunderous dance inducing album, which transcends genres and sounds like a rare collection of Deepak’s very own nostalgic love songs, that he describes as “cosmic R&B.”

In February 2011 Illegal Art will release Summer Friends. Junk Culture has significant plans for a U.S. tour, details soon TBA.

What the press has said about Junk Culture:

“A blast to the headphones that brings to mind the off-kilger breaks of Flying Lotus and the unkempt energy of Prefuse 73′s early achievements. Mantena’s chop-cut arrangements meld spliced voices, out of place keys and plenty of close-cropped drums to form polyrhythmic bursts of sound and action.” -Noah Levine / URB

“A lovely, trippy blend of stuttering vocals, live drums and classic cut-up hip-hop break. It leaves you hanging in wonderment for a good while, then drops you into bliss. Perfect for sunset watching.” -Kid Kameleon / XLR8R

“Fragmented samples going off in your face. Almost dance-y, once in a while. . . Tone all phasey, woozy, wicky wacky. Short tracks, brutal edits, then looping. Sort of want to think of them as composition.” -Ben Ratliff / NY Times

“The record’s title track is an appealingly textured amalgam of looped beats, grainy synth stabs, and cut up vocals, and would seem to be pretty heavily indebted to the Filed., Of course, in this line of work, having such clear influences isn’t a bad thing.” -Pitchfork

“Mines the detritus of decades of pop culture, stitching together a laundry list of song samples and random bits of noise. . . a head-spinning batch of tracks that make for a brilliant sountrack to the quick clicking, constantly updating always plugged in species that we are devolving into.” -Robert Ham / Blurt

“The nine tracks here are spasmodically rhythmic ad awash in digitally altered tones, vaguely alluding to Jason Forrest’s hectic, prog-disco bombast, Caribou’s sublime psychedelic funk, and Prefuse 73′s clipped glitch hop.” -Dave Segal / The Stranger

There are a lot of summer concert festivals going on but none is more appealing at the moment more than the 2009 Virgin Mobile “FreeFest.” On August 30th at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., Aug. 30, more than 35,000 fans will be able to see Weezer, blink-182, Franz Ferdinand, Public Enemy, Jet, The National, Girl Talk, The Bravery, The Hold Steady, St. Vincent, Wale, Taking Back Sunday and more for FREE. “Taking care of our loyal customers comes first,” said Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P., promoter and producer of the Virgin Mobile Festival. “And when we say free, we mean it. The tickets are free. The parking is free. Ticketmaster really stepped up on this. Everybody just wants to make this the party of the summer. It’s gonna be nuts.” The only catch: To ensure Ticketmaster waives the convenience charge, fans simply have to pick up their tickets at Merriweather or the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. (No info yet on if you can pick up tickets at retail locations or print online).

PRESALE CODE: FESTER BUY TIX HERE THURSDAY 6/25 AT 10AM EST

Here’s more from the press release:

All 35,000 festival tickets will be given away with the public onsale kicking off at www.ticketmaster.com at 10 a.m. EST this Saturday. Previous Virgin Mobile Festival ticket buyers and Virgin Mobile customers will have first dibs on the tickets with an invitation to a “free-sale” (like a pre-sale but it’s free) on Thursday and Friday.

“In a time of economic challenges and daily sacrifices, we wanted to throw a fantastic party so people could let loose and have a great time — on us,” said Sir Richard Branson, Founder and President, Virgin Group. “Virgin Mobile FreeFest offers music fans a brilliant day of fun and music and a chance for them to give back to those even less fortunate.”

Virgin Mobile is encouraging people to text “FREEFEST” to 20222 (regardless of wireless carrier) to donate $5 to select U.S. youth homeless centers, via The RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile’s charitable arm.

Want to sit in the special VIP seating area? Virgin Mobile FreeFest, which is being sponsored by Kyocera Communications, will feature a special VIP seating area for ticketholders who complete 13 hours of community service at select U.S. youth homeless centers.

The fest’s Lucky Layoff Lounge will also offer “surprising treats” to ticketholders that present proof of unemployment. Virgin Mobile USA’s current Pink Slip Protection helps out American workers by offering eligible customers that lose their jobs three months of free wireless service.
