Lisbon, the fifth album by critically acclaimed band The Walkmen, is due September 14 with iTunes pre-orders beginning August 10. The album’s first single “Angela Surf City” is currently available via iTunes. This summer and fall the band will embark on a nationwide tour in support of the record including newly announced stops in Montreal (October 8) and Chicago (October 13). See below for a complete list of dates.

The band will also be appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on August 12, the same day they perform in New York City at Governors Island with Grizzly Bear. Additionally, they can be heard on WNYC FM’s Soundcheck on August 10 at 2:30pm EDT; listen live at 2:30 p.m. EDT on FM 93.9 or by live stream at

Lisbon was recorded over a two-year period in warehouses on Girard Ave. in Philadelphia and on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. A few songs that helped establish the record’s tone were written during several inspiring and successful trips to Lisbon, Portugal. The 11 songs on Lisbon were carved out of 29 songs that the band recorded over the course of ten months beginning in August 2009. You & Me engineer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, Les Savy Fav, Tokyo Police Club) worked with the band from August to February, and then in March of 2010 the band traveled to south Dallas to finish the album with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky).

Featuring the band’s signature vintage instrument-sound, Lisbon brings a raw, fiery rock ‘n’ roll spirit to the complexities of the You & Me songwriting. Lisbon will showcase “a bunch of fast rockers and big bashers, and a couple great oddballs” says front man Hamilton Leithauser.

The Walkmen broke through in 2002 with their debut album Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone. 2004’s Bows & Arrows featured indie rock anthem “The Rat” which Pitchfork recently named the #20 song of the decade. In 2006 the band recorded a song-by-song cover of Harry Nilsson and John Lennon’s 1974 classic Pussy Cats as a farewell to their Harlem studio space Marcata. The Walkmen grew up playing together in various bands since the fifth grade including New York’s Jonathan Fire*Eater and Boston’s The Recoys.

Karen Elson releases her first album, The Ghost Who Walks via Third Man/XL Recordings today. Recorded at Third Man Studios with Jack White as producer, Karen’s solo debut features 11 original compositions which were all written following her 2005 relocation from New York City to the city of country music, Nashville, TN. From tormented blues laments to hauntingly beautiful folk-infused melodies with a traditional country twang, The Ghost Who Walks is a striking combination of Elson’s storied musical background, coupled with her newly found Nashville roots.

Karen Elson has also announced the debut video release for the lonesome, traditional folk/country inspired ballad “Cruel Summer,” available exclusively on View the video here:

Praise for Karen Elson:

“With a voice that can go from retro-breathy chanteuse to rootsy belter in a few notes…Ms Elson is ore than just a pretty face, or even a pretty voice, but an artist in her own right…Her album leans toward dark, spare Americana in instrumentation and themes. Onstage, eyes closed, she weaves like a 1960s folkie.” – The Sunday New York Times (A&L)

“Within the first minute of The Ghost Who walks, Karen Elson puts to rest any concerns that she’s just another pretty face. Elson’s wistful voice effortlessly dances across a retro-chic landscape populated by characters likely to pull double duty in works by Nick Cave or Flannery O’Connor. “ – Under The Radar

“The guitar-wielding 31-year-old, whose debut album (produced by her hubby) will be out this summer, has a loungey, twangy vibe that ventures into ethereal territory.” – Spin
