Fresh off of stops at Bethlehem Musicfest and Lollapooloza, Jane’s Addiction brought their Theatre Of The Escapists tour to The State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ on Sunday night. At about 9:20 or so the lights went down, the audience stood up, and Jane’s Addiction took the stage. The background was what looked like a sculpture of two naked ladies and there were also girls hanging down from the ceiling on swings. From where I was standing it didn’t look like the band had changed much in the last 20+ years. Singer Perry Farrell, drummer Stephen Perkins, bass player Chris Chaney, and the “Ink Master” himself on guitar, Dave Navarro. They all looked fit, and like they were ready to tear the State Theatre apart.

Opening with “Underground”, “Mountain Song” and “Just Because” the band sounded pretty great. Never having seen the band before, I was quite impressed. Up next was the band’s biggest hit, “Been Caught Steeling” and everyone in New Brunswick lost their minds at once. The State Theatre is typically a place for theatrical plays, but on Sunday night Jane’s Addiction turned it into a full blown party.

Because there is no real barrier at The State Theatre, the band, specifically Farrell and Navarro could be seen shaking hands, pounding fists, and sharing smiles with fans against the stage the whole night. Farrell has always been a charismatic front man and he certainly charmed those in the front. The background always stayed pretty interesting: girls hanging from swings, girls floating across the stage, naked girl statues, lights and girls, girls, girls. But at times it was really quite beautiful.

“Ain’t No Right”, “Irresistible Force” and another fan favorite, “Jane Says” kept everyone on their feet the whole time. The band jumped around all four studio albums with “Up the Beach”, “Had A Dad” and “Three Days” before leaving the stage for a short time. They band returned to play three more: “Splash A Little Water On It”, “Ocean Size” and “Stop!” before taking a bow, and walking off for good.

The band has been on hiatus, switched members and reunited more than a few times in their career, but this latest reunion felt like a good one. It is always nice to see a band enjoying themselves, and it definitely showed on Sunday night. Farrell and the rest have made no definite plans on what is happening after this tour. A follow up to The Great Escape Artist has been hinted at, but nothing solid. Watching them play on Sunday though, if they come off this tour and take that energy into the studio, the next album should be a killer one. In the meantime, it is nice to see a band do what they do best, and loving every second of it.

UME has announced that they will be opening for Jane’s Addiction at the official Lollapalooza Aftershow on Saturday August 4th at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Ume was personally selected by Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell to perform at the SOLD OUT concert. Guitarist/singer Lauren Larson describes the exciting phone call from Perry:

“My cell phone rang while we were sitting by the dumpsters outside a club in Jacksonville, FL eating peanut butter on saltines. I’ve been dreaming of playing Lollapalooza ever since I was a kid in the early 90′s wearing my brother’s over-sized Lollapalooza shirts. To be called by the artist who started it all is surreal. One of the symbolisms of the word “ume” is perseverance and devotion. I’m glad we’ve stuck with this and never given up on our dreams.”

Ume is also excited to announce the second leg of their tour with the Toadies and Helmet set to kick off on October 18th at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson, Arizona. The tour includes a stop at the Fun Fun Fun Fest in the band’s hometown of Austin, Texas. Please see below for full dates.

Before Ume heads back out in the road in the fall, they will head back into the studio to work on the follow-up to their debut full-length album Phantoms. Ume will be recording their new album with Grammy® Award winning producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Cat Power, Queens of the Stone Age).

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Ume is Lauren Larson (Vocals, Guitar), Eric Larson (Bass), and Rachel Fuhrer (Drums). The trio’s music is one of beautiful juxtapositions: the loud and soft, the aggressive and eerie, buoyant melodies bursting through wall-of-noise dissonance. Ume explores the artier, heavier side of indie rock, post-punk, and alternative rock. Like a bridge between Black Sabbath and Bat For Lashes, the LP is heavy, anthemic, beautiful and mesmerizing.

As JANE’S ADDICTION gear up for their much-anticipated “Theatre of the Escapists” tour launching February 22 in classic theatres, they premiere their new video for “Underground” today, January 25, on Vevo.com (http://vevo.ly/xBHpbv). The song, which is the opener of their acclaimed album THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST (Capitol Records), takes on an alluringly dark dimension in the video, for which the band joined forces with esteemed director Robert Hales. An explicit version of the video will debut at Playboy.com this Friday, January 27 at 10:00 AM EST.

Shot in Los Angeles at the club Fais Do-Do, originally a speakeasy from the 1920′s with a New Orleans ambience, the video shows frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass performing while a cast of vaudevillian characters lurk around the dark, smoky setting.

As Farrell described the video to AOL’s Spinner: “There are Siamese Gargoyles, séances, card games and a man in a white fedora who was also on the cover of In Through the Out Door (a Led Zeppelin album). People get made love to and murdered in the backrooms while the band plays on.” Director Robert Hales (Nine Inch Nails) said he set out to create “a video that really immerses itself in what the band is all about–that off-kilter vibe, kinky imagery, and ‘lust for life’ spirit that’s embedded in their music.”

Meanwhile, JANE’S ADDICTION’s upcoming North American tour of classic theatres has instantly become a hot ticket, with several shows already sold out in anticipation of a chance to see the pioneering alternative rockers in intimate venues. JANE’S ADDICTION are poised to deliver an “immersive” theatrical experience as only they can. “We chose to play as many of the great theatres that we could find because we wanted to immerse the audience in a unique experience unlike any they have ever seen at a rock show,” says FARRELL. “Expect an orgy of musical and visual delights. We like orgies, and hope you do too.”

From the beginning, JANE’S ADDICTION has thrown the most unique parties in rock, mixing a fierce musicality with theatrical flair onstage. 2012 sees the band–who’ve always outrageously combined electricity, sex and danger–return in support of their acclaimed album THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST (Capitol Records), which features the now-buzzing-at-radio track “Underground.” Starting February 22, this special run of North American shows—called “Theatre of the Escapists”–will bring the band to intimate venues, most of which are classic theatres. The alternative rock pioneers–frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass—are poised to deliver an immersive theatrical experience as only they can. Tickets go on sale January 14, with a pre-sale set for 10:00 EST this Wednesday, January 11. There will be a special package on JanesAddiction.com where fans can pair up their presale ticket with a high-quality lithograph. The lithograph will be signed by the band and sold only at the JanesAddiction.com presale.

“We chose to play as many of the great theatres that we could find because we wanted to immerse the audience in a unique experience unlike any they have ever seen at a rock show,” says FARRELL. “Expect an orgy of musical and visual delights. We like orgies, and hope you do too.”

2011 was a milestone year for JANE’S ADDICTION, marking the release of their first studio album in eight years, the Rich Costey-produced album, THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST. Spin, writing about one of the album’s tracks, noted that “frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro both put in stunning performances…it sounds like a band re-vitalized” (August 3, 2011), while USA Today said the album finds “…core members Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins conjuring the feral drive and mystical haze of those early works with a fresh kick to the band’s electro-rock meld (10/17/11).” The album features “Irresistible Force,” the transfixing Top Ten alternative rock hit that Rolling Stone called “an art metal freak show set on some distant planet” (August 3, 2011). Their new single, “Underground” is currently climbing the alternative and rock radio charts. It features some of NAVARRO’s best guitar work, according to the Wall Street Journal, which took note of the way he ”excels with terse fills long before he solos at the song’s fade.” The publication added: “As always, Stephen Perkins proves to be one of rock’s great drummers, and his interplay with Mr. Navarro, his high-school marching-band buddy, is one of the disc’s savory treats” (October 11, 2011).

Also in 2011, JANE’S ADDICTION headlined major events such as the Splendor in the Grass in Australia, the launch of Lollapalooza Chile, Gathering of the Vibes, and the iHeart Radio Festival in Las Vegas.

In June, JANE’S were inducted into Guitar Center’s RockWalk by Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello. Morello made it clear that the alt-rock pioneers led the way: ” Nirvana often gets credit for being the first ‘alternative’ band to break through, the band that changed music and led rock out of the hair metal wilderness of the ‘80’s. That’s just not true. It was Jane’s Addiction.”

In August, at Lollapalooza’s 20th Anniversary in Chicago, in front of 80,000 fans, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters recounted the first time he saw JANE’S ADDICTION in 1991 in Los Angeles: “…that day me and Kurt went down and we sat at the audience and we thought: ‘Oh my god, music is f%%%kin changing.’ There’s 20,000 people here. To see bands that are actually f%%%kin cool. WTF. How did that happen! So I’d like to thank Perry for changing music–thank you Perry…Well this one goes out to you Perry, cause if it weren’t for you, I swear to god, we wouldn’t f%%%kin be here right now. And when I say: ‘We.’ I mean: ‘F%%%kin We.’ Am I right! Am I Right!”

Onstage, JANE’S ADDICTION hold nothing back. They “…reminded everyone there were rock gods to be prayed to, and then defied them with feverish grace,” noted Billboard (August 13, 2011—check date) of their NYC show at Terminal 5. Writing about their Los Angeles performance at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, ArtistDirect.com (October 5, 2011) said: “Jane’s Addiction stood triumphant for the entire show. It was one of those magical gigs where every element simply worked. On stage, Jane’s Addiction display the kind of mystique that’s belonged to the likes of Led Zeppelin and few others. However, they’re one of a kind.”

The cities for JANE’S ADDICTION’s “Theatre of the Escapists” tour, with support act Black Box Revelation (www.blackboxrevelation.com), are as follows:

Saint Louis, MO
Detroit, MI
Columbus, OH

JANE’S ADDICTION–frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass–will ring in 2012 with a special New Year’s Eve show at the Belly Up in Aspen, Colorado (their third annual New Year’s Eve show at this intimate venue). The alt-rock pioneers’ intimate Rocky Mountain spectacular will be shared with music fans via a live broadcast on Sirius XM’s Lithium Channel 34, starting tomorrow night (Saturday, December 31) at 11:15 pm MT sharp.

2011 was a milestone year for JANE’S ADDICTION, marking the release of their first studio album in eight years, THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST (Capitol Records). Rolling Stone described the Rich Costey-produced album as “classic Jane’s–all yowling vocals and sensual waves of music cascading and peaking (10/27/11),” while USA Today said the album finds “…core members Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins conjuring the feral drive and mystical haze of those early works with a fresh kick to the band’s electro-rock meld (10/17/11).” The album features “Irresistible Force,” the transfixing Top Ten alternative rock hit they performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Currently, the new “Underground” is buzzing in clubs and on radio with its video set to be made available in the coming weeks. The band debuted “Underground” on “The Late Show with David Letterman” this past fall.

Also in 2011, JANE’S ADDICTION headlined numerous major events such as the launch of Lollapalooza Chile, Gathering of the Vibes, the iHeart Radio Festival in Las Vegas and the DeLuna Festival. In June, they were inducted into Guitar Center’s RockWalk by Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello who said:

“Nirvana often gets credit for being the first ‘alternative’ band to break through, the band that changed music and led rock out of the hair metal wilderness of the ‘80’s. That’s just not true. It was Jane’s Addiction. Inspiring, intelligent, furiously rocking and artistically deep as f**k.” Read the entire text of Morello’s induction speech here

In 2012, look for JANE’S ADDICTION to take their musical celebration on a world tour including a headlining slot at the debut of Lollapalooza Brazil in Sao Paulo April 7-8. Additional dates to be announced.

Born 20 years ago out of punk rock will and unbridled passion, Lollapalooza—founded by Perry Farrell, festival visionary and lead singer of Jane’s Addiction–has rocked through the parks, amphitheaters and fairgrounds of North America before becoming an acclaimed destination festival in Chicago every summer, leaving countless memorable musical moments in its wake. Next year, the festival will once again touch down in South America with the second edition of Lollapalooza Chile in O’Higgins Park in Santiago, March 31 – April 1, 2012, and will venture across the continent for the first-ever Lollapalooza Brazil at the Jockey Club in São Paulo, April 7-8, 2012.

In a feat of cultural exchange last April, Lollapalooza Chile captured the eyes, ears and imagination of South America. In 2012 the continent will experience a double dose of this Lollapalooza magic when the festival makes back-to-back weekend stops in Chile and Brazil. The two festivals will share some–but not all acts–on their bills. Lollapalooza Chile and Lollapalooza Brazil will both welcome the Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, MGMT, TV On The Radio, Bassnectar, Band of Horses, Thievery Corporation, Peaches, Cage the Elephant, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Friendly Fires, Foster the People and Tinie Tempah.

Fresh from triumphing over the elements with this year’s Lollapalooza U.S. headline set of a lifetime, Foo Fighters are sure to turn equally dynamic main stage closing sets in both Brazil and Chile– performances that will mark the Foos’ first trip ever in Chile as well as their first Brazilian appearance in over a decade.

Festivalgoers in Chile will experience rare treats with Bjork and Avicii, as well as an eclectic collection of bands including progressive rockers Los Jaivas, the socially conscious Juana Fe, punk rock giant BBS Paranoicos, and the Chilean revelation of rockorgánico, Camila Moreno.

Lollapalooza Brazil will host the triumphant return of Jane’s Addiction and a special blend of iconic indie rockers from every region of the country, including Plebe Rude from Brasília, Wander Wildner from Porto Alegre and Cascadura from Salvador. “The people of Sao Paulo have been very active–twittering me whom they want to see in the 2012 Lolla lineup,” states Farrell. “Judging by all the requests, they are going to erupt. We really delivered for them. Now, I want them to show me how you party in Brasil!”

Both of these two-day music extravaganzas will take place in a gorgeous urban setting, with multiple music stages, an electronic tent, amazing local fare, and a Kidzapalooza area for the little rockers.

Lollapalooza Chile will return to O’Higgins Park in Santiago on March 31 – April 1, 2012. Discounted two-day passes are on-sale now, while supplies last. After that, tickets will be available at the regular price at www.lollapaloozacl.com

MORE TO BE ANNOUNCED!

Lollapalooza: Lollapalooza was born two decades ago when Perry Farrell, lead singer of fabled alternative rockers Jane’s Addiction, started planning a farewell tour for the group. His idea morphed into a larger-than-life musical roadshow that would bring music, culture and community to fans across North America, before finding a permanent home in Chicago’s historic Grant Park in 2005.

Lollapalooza was reborn as a summer destination festival, delivering an ever-more diverse array of 130+ artists from all genres on eight states. Widely considered one of the premier festivals in the world, Lollapalooza continues to thrive in the Windy City getting bigger and better with every year. This year’s gathering was headlined by Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, MUSE, My Morning Jacket, DeadMau5, Cold War Kids, and A Perfect Circle.

Perry Farrell is one of the most influential and original musical figures in recent history. Dubbed as the “Godfather of Alternative Rock,” Farrell fronts Jane’s Addiction which formed in 1985. Creating a new genre and musical movement, Farrell and Jane’s Addiction changed the music scene and paved the way for bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and STP. In 1993, Perry created Porno for Pyros, a daring evolution to his diversity and growth. As well as being a groundbreaking musician, he is the creator and founder of Lollapalooza. Launched in 1991, SPIN magazine listed Lollapalooza as the #1 tour that changed the world. Known for its musical diversity, Lollapalooza was instrumental in exposing alternative music formats to the masses and establishing a sense of commonality across a fragmented demographic. The first of its kind, Lollapalooza quickly established itself as a lifestyle festival, pushing the envelope and exposing concert goers to a subculture of ‘alternative’ living and art, and provided a platform for numerous environmental and human-rights causes as well. As a constant creative force, Farrell continues to push his own artistic horizon as a music producer, electronic music performer and visual artist, as well as a rock icon. In November 2011, he was honored at the annual Billboard Touring Conference & Awards with the “Apple Award.” Perry is the first-ever recipient of this award, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of legendary promoter Bill Graham’s death. Perry received this honor because Billboard recognized that Perry has always given fans special experiences, as Graham did before him (the “Apple Award” is so named because Bill Graham gave out apples to fans leaving Fillmore West shows).
