“A Better Place,” the second video from Glen Campbell’s critically acclaimed album “Ghost On The Canvas” premiered today at AOL Music/Spinner/The Boot. The video features a special guest appearance from Joshua Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, Kyuss, Them Crooked Vultures), and is directed by Kii Arens and Jason Trucco.

The legendary singer, guitarist, and television star, Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease last year. Following more than 20 Top 40 hits and selling 50 million records worldwide, Campbell this year received a Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award (his 8th GRAMMY to date). He is currently midway through his “The Goodbye Tour” to say a fond thank you to his legions of loyal fans. Campbell’s final studio album “Ghost On The Canvas” is out now on Surfdog Records. The album represents a poignant look back at his life and career with contributions by the artists he continues to inspire.

On how it came about that Joshua Homme is featured in Glen Campbell’s swan song video, Homme recalls, “The video director, Kii Arens, is a friend and collaborator. He asked me outta the blue and I jumped at the chance. I believe his exact words where “Do you want to play the bartended from The Shining in the last Glen Campbell?” and mine were “Of course I do!” He continues, “I’m ecstatic. I’m humbled. I’m lucky. I’m honored. I’d have carried lights and cameras to do it.”

Like a generation, Homme home grew up with Campbell’s songs as a big part of his musical diet at home “”Rhinestone Cowboy” was already a huge hit, “Wichita Lineman” and his work with Anne Murray was being played around the house. It was just part of my soundtrack to being a kid at home. When I got a little older and into picking my own music, I realized Glen Campbell was in The Beach Boys, started hearing his earlier music and seeing the full scope of what an incredible guitar player and recording artist he was too. The amount of sessions and songs is incredible. He is a superstar of music. Between that and his TV show, I began to get a clue that being a musician is more than just playing an instrument.”

This farewell video features Campbell looking back at his life and career. He also sends a personal message to his wife, Kimberley, a former Radio City Music Hall dancer that the Rhinestone Cowboy met on a blind date in 1981. “My love goes out to Kim, my amazing grace. You’ve been by my side through these changing times, and it means the world to me.”

“Ghost On The Canvas” is backed by a roster of players that includes Chris Isaak, Dick Dale, Billy Corgan, Brian Setzer, Rick Nielsen, Roger Manning, and The Dandy Warhols.

Ween lead singer Gene Ween will be performing the National Anthem, and Glenn McClelland (Ween, Blood Sweat & Tears) will be providing organ music throughout the afternoon. Celebrity players will include Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age). The rest of the players responded to an open-invitation solicitation from Dean via his personal Facebook page. All the players have contributed $25 to cover the cost of team jerseys and to benefit the charity. Larry Keller, mayor of New Hope will be one of the umpires for this game.

There will be food catered by Ryan Jameson Catering, water and soft drinks for sale, and commemorative t-shirts, caps as well autographed jerseys and baseballs. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

While on tour in Norway this summer, playing in Them Crooked Vultures, Alain Johannes did an impromptu performance of “Endless Eyes,” the powerful opening track off his solo debut, Spark. Fortunately TCV/Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme (whose label Rekords Rekords released Johannes’ album) was on hand to film the moving performance. If you didn’t catch it when it premiered on Ultimate-Guitar, click HERE to watch the video. The footage was filmed next to the Hove Festival, where Johannes and Homme performed an hour later.

Sparkis an ode to Natasha Shneider, Johannes’ late wife and creative partner who passed away in 2008. From beginning to end, the albumshowcases the remarkable technical precision and versatility that has made Johannes such an in-demand guitar player. It also reveals him to be far more than a rock guitarist, with elements of classical, flamenco, and Indian music displayed throughout. Tying it all together is his ability to craft melodies ripe with nuance, which is what truly makes each of the eight tracks captivating and emotionally resonant.

Johannes will be heading out on tour next month in support of Fistful of Mercy (the new band featuring Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur, and George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison). Don’t miss your chance see him live!

Joshua Homme’s Rekords Rekords, through a partnership with Ipecac Recordings, will release three albums this fall: Alain Johannes’ Spark (Oct. 5), Mini Mansions self-titled debut (Nov. 2) and a reissue of Queens of The Stone Age’s self-titled debut with three additional songs (Nov. 26).

An artist-driven label, Rekords Rekords’ newly formed affiliation with Ipecac Recordings actually dates back to 2003 when Homme’s ongoing Desert Sessions series released an installment on Ipecac, re-connecting Homme with longtime friends and Ipecac co-owners Mike Patton and Greg Werckman.

“Reports on the death of the record label have been greatly exaggerated,” said Werckman. “Record labels like Rekords Rekords and artists like Joshua Homme continue to wage an assault on mediocrity and complacency in the music industry. We, at Ipecac, are stoked to work side by side with unique talents like Alain, Mini Mansions and el jefe Homme. Keep art in the artists hands.”
Rekords Rekords releases slated for 2010:

* Alain Johannes Spark (Oct. 5) – Johannes, co-founder of Eleven and collaborator with Queens of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Chris Cornell, Mark Lanegan and Spinnerette, penned this heartfelt album in dedication to his late wife and Eleven partner Natasha Shneider. Spark showcases Johannes’ impressive musical dexterity moving seamlessly from coveted rock guitarist to soulful songwriter. “Alain’s record is the total embodiment of what the label stands for,” explains Homme. “The war against endorsing mediocrity and the uncensored attempt to take a leap off the musical cliff. Spark is a stunning examination of figuring out what you do when someone’s gone, and it’s utterly breathtaking.”

* Mini Mansions Mini Mansions (Nov. 2) – The Los Angeles based trio of Michael Shuman (Queens of The Stone Age), Zach Dawes and Tyler Parkford have spent the past eighteen months touring with a number of bands including The Dead Weather, Autolux, Them Crooked Vultures and Grizzly Bear, have released a limited edition EP and collectible 7″ all while writing and recording their full-length debut. Recorded at Homme’s Pink Duck Studios (and with Homme lending a hand on mixing several songs), The LA Weekly described the band’s first single (“Monk”) as “a mercurial slice of vintage-sounding psych-pop.” The Seattle Weekly said of the band, “Mini Mansions is the side project of Queens of The Stone Age bassist Michael Schuman, and as far as offshoots go, it ranks up there with Jack White’s The Dead Weather.”

* Queens of The Stone Age Queens of The Stone Age (Nov. 26) – A highly sought after, out of print album, the debut release from Queens of The Stone Age has been recreated by Homme as it was initially envisioned, with three tracks that were initially cut from the record reinstated. Queens of The Stone Age will be reissued on Black Friday as a 180 gram double-gatefold, colored vinyl release packaged with a CD version. The straight CD release arrives in-stores on Dec. 7.

Fresh off his latest run of shows playing guitar for Them Crooked Vultures, and currently on a tour of Europe to include appearances at Reading and Leeds festivals, Alain Johannes is getting ready to release his solo debut, Spark (Rekords Rekords/ Ipecac Recordings), which has the new release date of October 5th. With a resume that includes co-founding the band Elevenand collaborations with Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Chris Cornell, Mark Lanegan, and Spinnerette (Brody Dalle’s latest project) among numerous others, Alain Johannes has already established himself as a gifted and prolific musical talent. However, Sparkis where Johannes’ strengths as a songwriter, vocalist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist are finally showcased all at once.

Queens of the Stone Age/Them Crooked Vultures frontman Joshua Homme, whose label Rekords Rekords will co-release Spark with Ipecac Recordings, says: “Alain’s record is the total embodiment of what the label stands for—the war against endorsing mediocrity and the uncensored attempt to take a leap off the musical cliff. Spark is a stunning examination of figuring out what you do when someone’s gone, and it’s utterly breathtaking.”

Spark opens with “Endless Eyes,” a beautiful flurry of cigar box guitars churning out layers of highly rhythmic riffs. Johannes’ soulful vocals soar on top, creating a mystical, eastern-flavored sound. The track is an ode to Natasha Shneider, Johannes’ late wife and creative partner. After she passed away in 2008, Queens of the Stone Age organized an all-star benefit show in Los Angeles to celebrate Shneider’s life. Johannes composed “Endless Eyes” specifically for the show, and the song ended up settling the wheels in motion for what would become Spark.

From beginning to end, the album showcases the remarkable technical precision and versatility that has made Johannes such an in-demand guitar player. Spark also reveals him to be far more than a rock guitarist, with elements of classical, flamenco, and Indian music displayed throughout. Tying it all together is his ability to craft melodies ripe with nuance, which is what truly makes each of the eight tracks captivating and emotionally resonant.

Rekords Rekords exists for one purpose—to make music. There’s no hidden ulterior motive. There’s no overbearing corporate machine. There’s no middleman. There’s no pressure to conform. There’s just art, in its purest form. Founded by visionary Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures frontman Joshua Homme, Rekords Rekords remains a creative collective, first and foremost. Since 1997, the label has been a vehicle for Homme to release Desert Sessions and Eagles of Death Metal albums. There’s more music rising on Homme’s horizon than ever before though. Through a unique partnership with Dangerbird, Rekords Rekords is truly coming to life in 2010, and rock ‘n’ roll may never be safe again.

Homme describes the label’s ethos best. “It’s about the creation and releasing of music, period. I wanted to put out releases without being asked any questions. That’s why Rekords Rekords started. More than ever, now is a great time to make music for the sake of making music. Single, shmingle, just make a fucking piece of art.”

The first piece of art releasing on the label this year is Alain Johannes’ solo debut Spark. Eleven co-founder and Queens of the Stone Age cohort Johannes pays tribute to his late wife and creative partner Natasha Shneider with an honest and heartfelt collection of songs. Dropping August 31, this is the label’s flagship release via Dangerbird.

“Because Alain plays, produces, records and sings, there’s no plumbing between his feelings and what the music sounds like,” enthuses Homme. “The rollercoaster of Spark’s very fragile beauty is the reason I started playing music. There are some things that can’t be explained with words. I like to ask, ‘Can someone play it to me instead?’ This record is such a great example of what cannot be said but what is so true.”

For Homme, each release will offer the listener an experience, and it begins with Spark. He goes on, “Many people listen to records on the way to the bank and that’s absolutely fine. However, you should be able to actually hold your breath and swim down deeper into a record until you’re absolutely consumed by it. Spark is a record that can whisk you away, and that’s such a valuable commodity. I’m thankful when I get an album like that.”

The world will be quite thankful for everything that the label has in store. This isn’t a new venture for Homme. In fact, the label’s very birth was tied to that of Homme’s multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated Queens of the Stone Age. In 1997, through previous partner Man’s Ruin Records, Rekords Rekords released the first Queens of the Stone Age/Kyuss split. With the Dangerbird partnership firmly in place for North America, Homme plans on releasing new offerings from The Desert Sessions and Eagles of Death Metal as well as re-releasing Desert Sessions Vol. 1-10 as a box set. Dangerbird’s the perfect collaborator for all of this. Since 2004, the Silverlake indie label has been the home to crucial modern rock acts like Silversun Pickups, Minus the Bear and Sea Wolf.

Homme continues, “I have a true partner in Dangerbird for the U.S. The reason I went there in the first place was because they’re about getting things done—’nuff said. There’s no reason to wait or belabor the point about releasing records. This is the time to focus on the consistency of your art. Rekords Rekords is really more of a stamp in the hopes to try to be like Wolfman Jack. People listened to Wolfman Jack because they liked his taste but he was playing all different kinds of music. I hope to develop a similar trust with fans of the music. If people like one of our releases, they’ll like the next one sight unseen.”

Music enthusiasts can trust the label especially with upcoming releases such as Mini Mansions’ debut on the way. Fronted by Queens of the Stone Age bassist Mikey “Shoes” Shuman, the Los Angeles rockers elevate psychedelica to new heights. Homme comments, “I gravitate to music that paints a really colorful broad picture. Mini Mansions have these elements of Beach Boys, Pink Floyd and Eliot Smith without humping them at all. Their album evokes this dark and lovely landscape. None of that would matter if there weren’t hooks though, and there are!”

Homme’s got the freedom to do anything with Rekords Rekords, and he couldn’t be more thrilled to release even more forthcoming music under the label’s truly independent banner. “We’ve always done whatever we thought was right, and it’s always been a massive bloody fight,” reveals Homme. “That feels like misplaced energy. Trying to justify your music doesn’t matter. I feel like the real revolution is consistently doing whatever you think is right. That’s what this is about.”

Homme’s certainly doing the right thing with Rekords Rekords—for his immediate collaborators and beyond. He adds, “Rekords Rekords isn’t about putting out my friends’ rock music. It just so happens that Alain and Mikey made music that really floored me, and they needed their albums to come out without waiting for permission. So there’s Rekords Rekords.”

There’s also a synergy that runs through everything within the label. “I want to be surrounded by inspiring artists,” declares Homme. “The only way to do that is to be able to inspire and recognize someone else who is inspiring. I don’t care if I make coffee at a session as long as it’s a classic and cool session.”

In the end, it all comes down to honesty for Joshua Homme and Rekords Rekords. He concludes, “I’d simply like to make something really honest and hopefully that will set us apart from other labels. I don’t want to sell out Shea Stadium. I just want the people that are into the music to feel uplifted. I don’t think bigger is better. I just think better is better, and that’s fine. There’s nothing you can do to make people like your art. You just have to be honest and let her rip.”

Isn’t that the way all revolutions begin?

Them Crooked Vultures played a sold out (well, tickets kept getting released everyday, so can we really call it sold out?) show at the Roseland Ballroom (they don’t put on enough shows here) in New York City last night (10/15). The audience was filled with fans of each of the main trio’s bands (sorry tour guitarist Alain Johannes!) who were completely plastered at least an hour before Them Crooked Vultures took the stage. For about an hour and a half, TCV ripped through a set of songs that you only knew from YouTube and bootlegs like this one. The band opened with energetic shredders like “Elephants” and “Dead End Friends”. Most of the crowd was quite surprised at the most often under-appreciated guitar skills of frontman Josh Homme (who also fronts Queens Of The Stone Age and plays drums for Eagles of Death Metal). For quite of a few of us, it was also our first time witnessing legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones who not only shook Roseland with his at times thunderous bass lines but also played electric piano and a keytar (Who does he think he is, Lights? haha) on “Interlude w/Ludes.” Perhaps the most enjoyable image of the night was seeing drummer Dave Grohl tear apart on his drums. You sometimes forget that the lead singer of the Foo Fighters used to play drums. When Homme announced perhaps the most recognized song “Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I,” the crowd erupted. “You know this one?,” he replied (Video of the song below). Though a few songs seemed to drag a bit and played to the progressive rock fetishes of Homme and drummer Dave Grohl (and annoyed several of the hipsters in the crowd), the band truly put on an amazingly unique rock show that left everyone’s ears ringing. Check out the photos below and some videos (most are from maestro416, many thanks).
