Rolling Stone is set to make history this Wednesday August 3rd as they choose an unsigned artist to grace the cover of their magazine. The cover will be revealed at a party that night in New York City. Kanye West, Larry David, SNL’s Bobby Moynihan, Amanda Hearst and Chanel Iman among other guests are expected to be at the party.

Music Unites, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding sustainable music education programs, is excited to partner with Rolling Stone and Garnier Fructis to celebrate the first ever unsigned artist cover.

One of the two ‘Do You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star?’ finalists, either Lelia Broussard or The Sheepdogs – together with music industry luminaries, VIPs and media, will gather at the Empire Hotel Rooftop in New York to celebrate the unveiling of the cover and raise funds for Music Unites.

Rolling Stone’s ‘Do You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star?’ contest began with 16 unsigned acts competing for the most coveted prize in music – the cover of Rolling Stone. After four rounds of public voting, the two finalists battled it out on stage last month at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, TN. The ultimate winner, in addition to being the first unsigned act to ever appear on the cover, will also receive a recording contract with Atlantic Records.

The winner will be announced on a billboard in Times Square on August 1 and they will also perform on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon the following day. On August 3, the winner will be joined by the Editors of Rolling Stone and Music Unites founder Michelle Edgar at the cover reveal party. Music will be provided by DJ Paul Sevigny.

Limited tickets to the invitation-only party are available for purchase for $50 at musicunites.org/events. Starting today, through Facebook, people can help support Music Unites simply by clicking ‘LIKE’ on the Music Unites Facebook page and becoming a fan of the cause. Each new ‘LIKE’ through August 1 is automatically entered in to a draw to win a pair of tickets to the exclusive cover reveal party. All proceeds will go towards launching the Music Unites Youth Choir campaign to create after school programs across New York City’s five boroughs.

Michelle Edgar, Founder and Executive Director of Music Unites, says, “We are so excited about this Aug 3rd Rolling Stone Event. That this event is the celebration for the first unsigned artist to ever be on the cover of the magazine reinforces everything Music Unites stands for – empowering emerging artists and motivating up-and-coming musicians! What this event is celebrating is inspirational and we are so happy to be a part of it.”

Proceeds generously donated to Music Unites by tickets sales for the Rolling Stone cover reveal event will enable the organization to build on the foundation it has created in its first two years inspiring and supporting the next generation of musicians and music professionals. Music Unites programs and initiatives benefiting under-served communities in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles, include the Music Unites Youth Choir, Empowering Women through Music, and Adopt-A-School. Music Unites has also hosted multiple workshops and discussion panels, some geared toward music education and mentoring for students, and others geared toward networking, for the music industry community at large.

Music Unites has fostered many exciting partnerships over the past two years, having presented several successful, inspirational and informative outreach events in conjunction with organizations including ASCAP, Girls Inc., The Grammy Museum, Bebe Stores Inc., The Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, and the UN Foundation. Some of the artists Music Unites has worked with include Sting, Mark Ronson, Chester French, John Forte, and more recently Kate Nash, Shontelle, Caitlin Moe, and Diane Birch.

Hot off the heels of an incredibly successful run of West Coast shows, Lelia Broussard has claimed her spot in the top two of Rolling Stone’s So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star contest. Hand-picked as one of the sixteen best unsigned artists in the nation by the editors of Rolling Stone, she is now one step closer to gracing the cover of one of the magazine’s August issues and will be performing on the main stage at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. This final round of voting will close on July 1, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. EST with the winner being announced and performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and appearing on the August 18 issue of Rolling Stone (on newsstands August 5).

Lelia was just thirteen when she picked up a guitar and hasn’t looked back since. Adamant about pursuing her passion for music, she has created a successful independent career for herself using her ingenuity and the mediums available to her. Through social networking and word of mouth, Broussard’s MySpace has received over 11 million plays and her YouTube artist page has aggregated over 5 million views. Lelia’s out of the box cover of Beyonce’s “All The Single Ladies” garnered almost two million views on YouTube. This past January, Russell Simmons selected Lelia as one of his five favorite current unsigned pop/rock artists in his “Hip-Pop Challenge.” Broussard also used the internet and her social networking skills to raise over $15,000 to record Masquerade on Kickstarter.com, her campaign was one of the most successful music projects on the popular indie fundraising site at that time.
