Mariachi El Bronx – the alter ego of acclaimed punk outfit The Bronx – will kick off a headlining tour on May 17 at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO. The run, which will feature special guests Two Gallants, will include two free Sailor Jerry Presents shows (5/20 in Chicago and 5/22 in Philadelphia) plus a Rocks Off cruise in New York City (5/23). Prior to the tour’s launch, the band will play a pair of West Coast shows with Los Lobos and X, including a hometown concert at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre on May 5. Mariachi El Bronx will also support Dave Matthews Band, Gogol Bordello and tUnE-yArDs this spring and perform at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Full dates below.

“The ferocious Mariachi El Bronx took the stage in their signature charro suits …[and] brought together some of the best parts of Los Angeles,” said the LA Weekly in a recent live review. “Against swooping violins, heart pounding guitars and a bombastic horn section, lead singer Matt Caughthran held his own. Shaking with passion, he wrapped his fingers around the microphone and poured out his amorous woes.” Noted the Los Angeles Times: “The Bronx’s acoustic alter ego fuses its punky themes of struggle and misanthropy with traditional Mexican mariachi music. The result is startlingly natural.”

“Revolution Girls,” Mariachi El Bronx’s latest single, has been remixed by rising Latin electronica artists Los Macuanos, Super Guachin (ZZK) and Algodón Egipcio and will be out in April. You can check out the band performing “Revolution Girls” on “Late Show with David Letterman.”

In a Record Store Day exclusive, The Bronx and Mariachi El Bronx will release a split 12” on April 21. The special splatter-colored vinyl features both bands in their element – rocking their ferocious live show for rabid fans at intimate clubs from Brooklyn to Stockholm. The six-song collection includes a cover of Hanoi Rocks’ classic “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” that features a guest appearance by the legendary Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks.

Since forming in 2002, The Bronx has redefined what punk means, releasing three self-titled full-length albums and a deluge of 7 inches and EPs. Mariachi El Bronx was conceived in 2006, in response to a request for The Bronx to do an acoustic performance on television. Mariachi El Bronx followed in 2009 and Mariachi El Bronx (II) debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative New Artist chart in 2011. The Bronx will also be touring shortly – beginning with a pair of shows with The Hives next month, followed by a Rocks Off Cruise of their own (5/24) and numerous European dates. The band’s new album, The Bronx (IV), will be released this summer.

Mariachi El Bronx/The Bronx are: Matt Caughthran, Joby J. Ford, Jorma Vik, Brad Magers, Ken Mochikoshi Horne, Vincent Hidalgo and Ray Suen.

Mariachi El Bronx (II) – the second full-length studio album from Mariachi El Bronx, the alter ego of acclaimed Los Angeles-based punk outfit The Bronx – was released today by White Drugs/ATO Records. The band will make its network television debut on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” tomorrow, performing the album’s first single “48 Roses.” For a limited time, fans can get a free download of “48 Roses.”

The band’s in-store performance at Amoeba Records in Hollywood will be streamed live at 6 p.m. today. Tonight and tomorrow night, August 2 and 3, they’ll perform at record release parties at La Cita in downtown Los Angeles. The band will then embark on a series of European dates – including five shows with Gogol Bordello and appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK. Mariachi El Bronx will be joining Foo Fighters on the road this fall. The North American tour kicks off on September 14 and includes two nights at The Forum in Los Angeles (October 13 & 14). The band will also play the Austin City Limits Music Festival on September 18. (See below for itinerary.)

“Mariachi El Bronx (II) triumphs because not only does it treat the West Mexican musical idiom with respect, it raises the bar for future directions and possibilities,” said Alternative Press in a four-star review. “It’s a lively, and surprisingly kitsch-free, take on music that’s steeped in tradition,” noted NPR’s “All Things Considered” in a review of Mariachi El Bronx (II). “There’s really only one way to play mariachi, even if you’re a punk rocker — you have to mean it, right down to the last neatly chopped acoustic-guitar chord….On II, inside the tales of lost love and other tragedies, there’s plenty of tradition balanced by shots of pure joy and irreverence.” “On ‘48 Roses,’ Mariachi El Bronx shows they did their homework with an upbeat tune filled with tasty string runs and just the right dose of melodrama,” observed WNYC.org.

Mariachi El Bronx – comprising Matt Caughthran (vocals), Joby J. Ford (vihuela), Jorma Vik (drums), Brad Magers (trumpet), Ken Mochikoshi Horne (jarana), Vincent Hidalgo (guitarrón) and Ray Suen (violin) – was conceived in 2006, after The Bronx was asked to perform unplugged on Fuel TV. They did so as a mariachi band and discovered what they describe as “a second soul within.” Touring the world as The Bronx, they simultaneously began writing songs for Mariachi El Bronx, which was released in 2009. Both their debut album and II were co-produced by the band with former Oingo Boingo member John Avila.

On August 2, ATO Records will release Mariachi El Bronx (II), the second full-length studio album from Mariachi El Bronx, the alter ego of acclaimed Los Angeles-based punk outfit The Bronx. The band teamed up once again with John Avila, former member of Oingo Boingo, to co-produce the album, which was recorded this past Christmas and New Year’s at Avila’s studio, Brando’s Paradise in San Gabriel, CA.

The band will head out on tour with Foo Fighters on September 14. Summer dates for Mariachi El Bronx include numerous international festivals, a night at Atlantic City’s House of Blues with The Flaming Lips (June 23) and performances at the Atlantic City and Chicago stops of “Dave Matthews Band Caravan.” Mariachi El Bronx is also confirmed to play the Austin City Limits Music Festival on September 18. (See full dates below.)

“Going acoustic and dressing in black charro outfits is probably the punkest move they could have taken; El Bronx negotiate in exactly the same way as The Bronx – they don’t,” said NME of the band’s self-titled 2009 debut. “They fear nothing, explore everything and create from the rawest of emotion, making imperfections the very best bits.”

In recent years, The Bronx has redefined what punk means, releasing three self-titled full-length albums and a deluge of 7 inches and EPs. Mariachi El Bronx was conceived in 2006, after The Bronx was asked to perform unplugged on Fuel TV. Believing that nothing sucks more than rock bands playing acoustic songs, they adopted another style of music endemic to Los Angeles and infinitely better suited for an acoustic performance – mariachi music. The experience unearthed something unexpected, what the band likens to discovering a second soul within. Touring the world as The Bronx, they simultaneously began writing songs for Mariachi El Bronx. In 2007, Vincent Hidalgo, son of David Hidalgo (Los Lobos, Latin Playboys), joined the lineup and everything came together.

Mariachi El Bronx (II) bristles with intensity, drama and emotion – hallmarks of both mariachi and punk music. The 12-song collection contemplates the nature of love – a traditional topic in mariachi music, as men often hire bands to serenade the women they are courting – but Mariachi El Bronx brings a unique sensibility to the subject. The adrenalized album opener “48 Roses” paints a picaresque portrait of a man with an insatiable appetite for love while the percolating “Revolution Girls” details a border romance and “Poverty’s King” concerns a man tries to overcome class distinctions with a catchy come-on. A more somber note is struck in the tale of a fallen “Matador” and the bittersweet “Everything Dies.” “Mariachi El Bronx.” a tour-de-force instrumental, features Reyna de Los Angeles, America’s first all female mariachi ensemble.

Mariachi El Bronx – comprising Matt Caughthran (vocals), Joby J. Ford (vihuela), Jorma Vik (drums), Brad Magers (trumpet), Ken Mochikoshi Horne (jarana), Vincent Hidalgo (guitarrón) and Ray Suen (violin) – has been performing selections from the upcoming album in concert. You can check out the band’s recent performance at the Sasquatch Music Festival, courtesy of NPR.
