Miniature Tigers continue their busy year with the announcement of a new batch of Summer tour dates. Kicking off at the end of July, the headline run will hit New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and more in support of the band’s latest album, Mia Pharaoh (Modern Art/ILG). Out earlier this year, the brilliant abstract-pop record has received overwhelming acclaim, including Rolling Stone, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly, Nylon, and more. Likewise, Amazon recently proclaimed their song “Female Doctor” as the #2 Best Song of 2012 So Far.

The announcement of these new dates comes just after the end of a successful cross-country tour with fun. Prior to that, Miniature Tigers headlined a sold-out nationwide tour with their Modern Art label-mates Geographer and The Chain Gang of 1974.

After a great deal of anticipation, Miniature Tigers at last reveals that their third album Mia Pharaoh will drop March 6 via Modern Art Records, in conjunction with Warner Music’s Independent Label Group. The band premiered their sly, alluring indie-pop groove “Female Doctor” on Spin.com. The new track is streamed with a hilarious European reality TV clip montage of seductive female doctors, fitting to match the title of the track, from Nakedfunny.com and was directed by Max Goldblatt.

With the success of Miniature Tigers’ 2010 album F O R T R E S S, singer/guitarist Charlie Brand, drummer/keyboardist Rick Schaier, guitarist/mixer Algernon Quashie, and bassist Brandon Lee turned into relentless road warriors. The guys performed on countless headlining shows, shared numerous stages with such acts as The Morning Benders, Neon Indian, Walkmen, Freelance Whales and Tennis, and gave stellar performances at Lollapalooza, RVA Music Festival, Austin City Limits and POPPED! Music Festival.

When not on stage the band was igniting their charming idiosyncratic sound for Mia Parahoh, which Miniature Tigers amplifies the new record with an abstract pop and dance music flame. Brand was heavily inspired by “teenage dream” pop music, which of course received the four piece’s proper, quirky spin on it.

“Halfway through making Mia Pharaoh, I fell in love with pop all over again and was strictly listening to Top 40 music,” explains Brand. “Instead of studying Simon & Garfunkel drum tones, I was figuring out what samples The Dream and Kanye used, or trying to write a song that Katy Perry or Rihanna could sing—a real outsider pop record.”

Mia Pharaoh ends up with ten tracks that are locked and loaded with a luminous vintage-vibe synth that enhances pop dazed melodies, luring guitar riffs, untamed percussion beats, mixed with dreamy dance key chords, and a dash of brassy saxophone; all of which meshes into random peculiar sounds, giving the record an almost psychedelic experience that would even appeal to Timothy Leary. The band’s music is propelled by Brand’s languid and angelic vocals that swirl with several lyrics about erotic daydreams and heart-pounding tales of love-driven insanity.

With Mia Pharaoh, there’s a strange yet brilliant way Miniature Tigers raise the curtain on this pop record – making it a must listen!

3. Cleopatra
4. Afternoons With David Hockney
5. Easy As All That

Worcester, Mass based quartet, Dom, are set to embark on their first US headlining tour this March, including several shows at SXSW. Astralwerks/Burning Mill we be re-releasing Dom’s Sun Bronzed Greek Gods EP on February 15, 2011. The EP was previously only available in limited physical quantities and will now be available widely in all formats (LP, CD and digital). The new remixed and remastered EP keeps the exact same analog spirit of the original intact, so fans need not worry about alterations affecting the sound. Things sound better, as they were likely intended to be heard in the first place.

With warped vocals, fuzzy low-fi distortion, and broken Casio keyboard lines, Dom filters a DIY aesthetic through the upbeat, sunny rhythms of pop music. There’s a MacGyverized style to Dom’s buzzed-about debut EP Sun Bronzed Greek Gods, the seven songs feel like they’re held together by sonic duct tape. At any minute they could break apart. But they don’t. These tracks recorded in a bedroom–on a pink paisley guitar, a Casio and Fruity Loops–are solid, edgy and irresistibly fun.

Los Angeles duo Pepper Rabbit is thrilled to announce upcoming west coast tour dates, where they will be supporting Ra Ra Riot and post SXSW dates with Miniature Tigers. Following the October 2010 release of their debut album, Beauregard, on Kanine Records, Pepper Rabbit spent the fall touring the US with Cotton Jones, hitting CMJ, followed by a trek across Canada with Rural Alberta Advantage, and then finishing out the year on the west coast supporting Passion Pit and Freelance Whales.

Xander Singh and Luc Laurent originally met in Boston, where the two began making music together. They then recorded their debut LP, Beauregard, in New Orleans, and chose to make their live debut in India before settling in Los Angeles. Recently, the band has earned high praises from both peers and press, receiving coverage in Under The Radar, Seattle’s KEXP, New York’s WNYC, Blackbook and a feature in FILTER.

Pepper Rabbit’s live performances are done as a trio, treating listeners to a kaleidoscopic tapestry of sound, created with an array of instruments ranging from ukulele to clarinet, pounding rhythms and heavy synths.

2010

Hmm, where should we start here? The part where Miniature Tigers stay up all night with Neon Indian, fine-tuning the laser-like synths of their new single, “Gold Skull?” Yeah, that sounds about right.

“I won’t forget that experience,” says frontman Charlie Brand. “I remember the sun coming up and everyone in the room singing along. [Drummer] Rick [Schaier] was almost asleep on the floor as he did harmonies.”

While that part was captured during the Manhattan-bound mixing stages of Miniature Tigers’ second album (Fortress, out July 27 on Modern Art Records), the rest of the record was tackled at Dreamland, a converted 19th-century church that’s hosted everyone from Beach House to the B-52s. As you might imagine given its location—deep in the woods of Upstate New York—this led to some other late nights, ones that involved abject terror. But hey, that’s what happens when you decide to watch The Shining in a place that could double as a Friday the 13th set.

“That movie put us in a weird headspace,” explains Brand, “so we decided to go nuts on ‘Mansion of Misery’, starting with the drums. We also wailed on the guitars, making everything as loud as we possibly could.”

The result is one hell of an curtain-raising cut, as heavenly harmonies and tension-building effects segue into a sudden explosion of crushed cymbals and powder keg chords. So while it’d be easy to draw the usual reference points here (the two B’s: Brian Wilson and the Beatles), something’s a little off about Miniature Tigers’ indie pop presentations, whether we’re talking about the delirious chorus lines of “Bullfighter Jacket,” the hooting and hollering of “Lolita,” or the ’shroom-munching waking dream of “Coyote Enchantment.” And reigning in all the chaos, why, it’s none other than Chris Chu of the Morning Benders, applying the same widescreen approach that worked wonders on his own Big Echo LP.

“We like to push what doesn’t work sometimes,” says Brand, “and he helped balance that out for us. Chris is also very organized, focused and serious, which is nice, because we aren’t at all.”

That’s not totally true. After all, the band’s come a long way since Rolling Stone named them one of MySpace’s 25 best artists in late 2006. For one thing, Brand and Schaier finally have a steady lineup now, rounded out by guitarist Algernon Quashie and bassist Alex Gerber. The band played over 200 dates last year supporting their debut album “Tell It To the Volcano” with the likes of The Morning Benders, Bishop Allen, The Spinto Band and then there was the Ben Folds tour where Brand figured out what not to say onstage in front of their biggest crowds yet.

“I made a weird joke about being on acid at this college basketball arena,” he says. “I don’t even remember what I was talking about. I was dying up there.”

He won’t be any longer.

On Thursday night, fun. played a sold out show at the Mercury Lounge in New York. They were incredible. Frontman Nate sang every song like it was his last and the crowd seemed much obliged to sing the songs back to him as well. Nate mixed in a couple songs from his old band, The Format, with songs off of fun.’s debut album, Aim & Ignite(iTunes, Amazon MP3, CD). Check out the setlist above the pics. (Btw, I took some cool videos but the audio is distorted. If anyone can recommend a program I can use, lemme know. Thanks!) Miniature Tigers were one of the opening bands. They were alright except for the lead singer making weird jokes and observations. Oh, and classy sweater buddy!
