Nada Surf are excited to announce December 2012 tour dates in support of their critically acclaimed sixth album The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (Barsuk). The run of shows across the Midwest and North East will cap off an incredibly successful year for the beloved Brooklyn trio. “Nada Surf’s quietly built one of indie rock’s most consistent discographies,” wrote The Onion, going on to praise The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy as “a reliably crisp, tuneful addition, all racing snare hits, taut power chords, and Caws’ emotive tenor.” NPR for their part described the album as “tremendous — full of big, blooming rock that practically glows with generosity.” The band is hosting a ticket pre-sale for fans this Wednesday July 25th. General on-sale is this Friday July 27th at 10 am local venue time.

Fan pre-sale goes live on Wednesday July 25th at 10 am local venue time.
Pre-sale will be available at the following link.

Barsuk Records, City Slang and Nada Surf are excited to announce that they will be streaming their hometown album release show at the Bowery Ballroom tonight, beginning at 10 PM EST. Presented by Rdio and RootMusic BandPage, the full concert will be webcast live on their YouTube channel. For more details and the latest updates, fans can RSVP to the event on Facebook.

The band’s highly anticipated new album, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, has been hailed as “tremendous – full of big, blooming rock that practically glows with generosity,” by NPR’s All Songs Considered. Fans can listen to the entire album now at Spinner.com. “Waiting For Something,” one of the many explosive and melodic songs on the new record, just recently premiered on Stereogum and is available as a free download HERE. The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, which also features the track “When I Was Young, is available everywhere including iTunes.

Nada Surf are also set to kick off their national tour on March 20 in Los Angeles, CA. The band have confirmed An Horse to be the opening act on all the dates, which will have the bands rolling cross-country and wrapping up in Washington, DC on April 10. The dates follow select east and west coast gigs in late January. The band will appear on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on January 30, to play a new song on TV and an old fan favorite which will get posted on latenightwithjimmyfallon.com the next day.

Stars is Nada Surf’s seventh record, and fourth for Seattle indie Barsuk, following the successful and critically lauded Let Go (2003), The Weight is a Gift (2005), Lucky (2007) and their self-released covers record if i had a hifi (2010). This is their first album of new material in four years, and unlike all of the other Nada Surf records, Stars was made with a distinct attempt to capture their live sound. “We’ve always played faster and a little harder live,” says vocalist/guitarist Matthew Caws, “but we’d play so carefully in the studio. So with this album, we made a conscious decision to preserve what it felt like in the practice room, when you play with that new-song energy.”

Nada Surf’s lineup for 15 years has been and still is Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar), Daniel Lorca (bass) and Ira Elliot (drums), though this time, as on if i had a hifi and the tour that followed, they invited guitarist Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Death of Samantha) to join in the proceedings. Chris Shaw (Wilco, Brendan Benson, Elvis Perkins in Dearland and Super Furry Animals) was brought in to produce and record.

The national tour will kick off March 20th in Los Angeles, CA and see the band roll cross-country, wrapping up in Washington, DC on April 10th. The dates in support of Nada Surf’s new album – The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy (Barsuk) – follow select east and west coast gigs in late January, including a home town show at Bowery Ballroom on the day of album release January 24, 2012. A Pre-Sale for fans will begin Wednesday, November 9th with tickets available at www.nadasurf.musictoday.com, and regular on sale for all other dates will begin Friday, November 11th.

Nada Surf recently unveiled the track “When I was Young” as a first glimpse of the forthcoming album, which has already been heralded by NPR as “tremendous – full of big, booming rock that practically glows with generosity.” Fader lauded the track itself as “delightfully earnest,” while Stereogum positively described “When I Was Young” as starting out with a “delicate acoustic flutter” that “gradually builds into a more muscular crash-rock song.”

Barsuk Records is excited to announce the release of the new Nada Surf record, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, on January 24, 2012. NPR debuted the first track, “When I Was Young,” yesterday. Fans can now grab, share and re-post the free download from NPR HERE. Stars is Nada Surf’s seventh record, and fourth for Seattle indie Barsuk, following the successful and critically lauded Let Go (2003), The Weight is a Gift (2005), Lucky (2007) and their self-released covers record if i had a hifi (2010). This is their first album of new material in four years. The band will perform a day-of-release show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom.

Chris Shaw (Wilco, Brendan Benson, Elvis Perkins in Dearland and Super Furry Animals) was brought in to produce and record, having worked with the band before when he mixed their hit song, “Always Love.”

Unlike all of the other Nada Surf records, Stars was made with a distinct attempt to capture their live sound.

“We’ve always played faster and a little harder live,” Caws says, “but we’d play so carefully in the studio. So with this album, we made a conscious decision to preserve what it felt like in the practice room, when you play with that new-song energy. Just embrace it and not worry whether we’re overdoing it, kind of get all the thinking out of the way.” The tempos are high, but the songs bristle with hooks, breathtaking changes, and Nada Surf‘s trademark genius bridges. The educated ear will hear the influence of many bands from ’60s Brit-pop to post-punk and vintage indie, and yet there is an unmistakable Nada Surf sound: a certain rhythm section groove, introspective chord shapes and the unique emotional weight to Caws’s voice, both boyish and very soulful, a combination of wisdom and vulnerability.

“I really love Nada Surf,” author Jennifer Egan told Minnesota Public Radio this year, adding that she listened to the band’s music for inspiration while writing her 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad. “What they write about is very subtle moments of everyday life. They make it all look and feel very easy and natural.”

The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy is tremendous – full of big, blooming rock that practically glows with generosity,” says NPR. “As its title indicates, the record frequently examines the perils of over-analysis; of self-flagellation and pining for fantasy worlds instead of living and enjoying life. Among The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy‘s many highlights is “When I Was Young,” a winsome look at the disconnect between youthful wishes and adult realities. Naturally, Caws takes the least grim possible position: that we’re lucky enough to age into a place where the world we want is ours for the taking.”

Nada Surf had made all but their first record outside of New York, figuring they’d avoid distractions. But if you want to preserve the energy of the practice room, why not record in the practice room? So for Stars they set up shop in their rehearsal space in Lorca’s long-time loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The place is nicknamed “The Sitcom” because it regularly hosts a revolving cast of colorful characters and some legendary parties. There were some issues though – “We couldn’t do vocals late at night,” says Caws, “because the music from the bar downstairs would come through the floor.”

“Making this album was such a joy, the most fun we’ve had with a record,” Caws continues. “Formany years I’d only write if I had something troubling going on in my life and I needed to break through, but now I wanted to get past writing about just myself. That new outlook, for me, is the engine for making this record.”

The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy continues the notion of music as an alternative reality, and songs as things you can keep by your side for inspiration and support. Which is what makes Nada Surf a truly beloved band.

In an innovative approach that bucked conventional wisdom when it comes to album release schedules, Nada Surf’s covers album if i had a hi-fi has so far only been available at their live shows as a treat for fans that came out to see them play on their recent tour dates. Today the album lands on the shelves of local record stores as a CD and also luscious 180 gram Double LP with 3 bonus tracks. It is also available for download at digital retail outlets. The critically acclaimed covers album has gained the kind of reception usually reserved for self-penned releases on account of Nada Surf’s beautiful renditions of the eclectic mix of songs on the album.

Watch the video for “Electrocution (Bill Fox)”

Admittedly, cover albums are usually a contractual cop-out, but the diverse scope and amount of thought put into each track on if i had a hi-fi prevents it from sounding superfluous or self-indulgent. Instead, highlights such as the trio’s energetic, synthesizer-augmented version of Depeche Mode’s new-wave anthem ‘Enjoy The Silence’ and their stripped-down, more traditional version of Arthur Russell’s gem ‘Janine’ add new emotional resonance to the original versions without sacraficing any of these musicians’ artistic vision.

-Uncut

An organic detour down memory lane rather than an ortanized statement of their influences, say Nada Surf. True, nothing fuses these disparate strands beyond some gorgeous tunes.
-MOJO

They successfully transform Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy The Silence’ into a power-pop anthem, while Matthew Caws’ plaintive take on Kate Bush’s ‘Love And Anger’ is as smart as the album’s palindromic title.

Nada Surf proudly announce that following their spring tour – where if i had a hi-fi will initially only be available for purchase at shows – they will release their forthcoming covers album on CD/LP and digitally June 8th via the bands own label, Mardev Records, with distribution through ADA. To give fans a preview of the new album Nada Surf are making their take on Bill Fox’s “Electrocution” available for free download. Nada Surf‘s spring tour kicks off on March 25th with three sold-out New York shows, and concludes in late May with a performance at the 2010 Sasquatch Music Festival.

“Electrocution” is available for download at the link below.

if i had a hi-fi is full of inspired, unexpected choices: from avant-pop Kate Bush to underground power-pop classicist Dwight Twilley. There are some intriguingly obscure numbers, like Spanish band Mercromina’s “Evolution” and under-documented Bill Fox’s “Electrocution.” The as yet little known Fox, of Cleveland cult band The Mice, inspired local groups like Guided by Voices and Death of Samantha. Doug Gillard, who was in both of them, lends his highly evolved guitar skills to “Electrocution” as well as the Twilley and Go-Betweens songs.

That was another benefit of these sessions. Says lead singer and guitarist Matthew Caws, “It was a great excuse to have friends of ours sit in on something without having to wait another two years.” Guest players include Martin Wenk (Calexico), Phil Peterson (Kay Kay and the Weathered Underground), Joe McGinty (Losers Lounge, Psychedelic Furs) and Holly Miranda.

Nada Surf bring their trademark sense of harmony and musical craftsmanship to 12 of their favorite songs with their latest release, if i had a hi-fi, their first album of covers. Only a group with their wide-ranging and eclectic taste could bring songs from such artists as Kate Bush, Dwight Twilley and the Go-Betweens together into a coherent, intelligent record. hi-fi also includes some intriguingly obscure numbers like Spanish band Mecromina’s “Evolution” and Bill Fox’s power-pop “Electrocution.”

Although a great deal of thought went into the song selections, the band’s intent is not to make an overarching musical statement. Singer-guitarist Matthew Caws says, “We really just wanted to do it organically, whatever we felt like covering in the moment, rather than trying to sum up our influences or something. It’s whatever we were excited about in the months before making it. And I think we got to everything we wanted to.” The result is both inspired and casual, like a conversation with a friend who shares your taste but also pushes your musical boundaries. A vintage Moody Blues tune, the proto-prog tempo-shifting “Question,” shares space with The Soft Pack’s blissfully rudimentary “Bright Side,” Depeche Mode’s grand “Enjoy the Silence,” and experimental music icon Arthur Russell’s terse but sweet “Janine.”

Although the band had just returned from a worldwide tour in support of their 2008 release Lucky, and had looked forward to some time off, if i had a hi-fi mysteriously reenergized them. “The material came together spontaneously,” says Caws. “We’d get together and kick ideas around and soon we had an A list, a B list, a C list…. .” They’re particularly proud of the title, which is both a callback to the musical platform of their youth and a palindrome.

if i had a hi-fi was recorded over three weeks in September at Resonate Studios in Austin, TX with long-time collaborator and part-time keyboardist Louie Lino. Fans who attend shows during the spring tour will be able to get their hands on the record before it’s in stores, offering true believers the opportunity for a double-first: hearing the songs for the first time and being able to take them home.

The tour begins March 25th with three “Album Shows” in NYC. On consecutive nights, Nada Surf will perform their three most recent albums: Let Go, The Weight Is A Gift, and Lucky in full, along with songs from if i had a hi-fi, fan favorites and b-sides. The band will then continue on to cover both the East and West coasts.

There is a fan pre-sale for most US shows on Wednesday, January 6th at 10 am local time at http://nadasurf.musictoday.com
