Nicole Atkins has released a re-recorded version of her song “Neptune City” to benefit her native Jersey Shore in its relief efforts to overcome the destruction from Hurricane Sandy. This version of “Neptune City,” which originally appeared as the title track on her debut full-length on Columbia Records, was recorded with Lucero pianist Ricky Steff at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, TN, engineered by Matt Ross-Spang. The track is currently available for download at

All donations received from the download will be directed toward nonprofit organizations working to restore and rebuild the Jersey Shore. The funds will be re-granted from ATC’s Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund. After disaster strikes, the aftermath is broken down into three separate phases: Rescue, Relief, and Recovery & Rebuilding. Governments and multinational bodies are generally best equipped to handle the first two phases. The Recovery & Rebuilding phase is where donors can have the most impact in helping communities over the long-term. It is critical to full recovery, but is often the most overlooked and under-resourced phase as news sources turn to other stories and disasters. As such, Atkins will determine specific organizations once the full impacts and long-term implications of the disaster become more clear.

Nicole Atkins was personally affected by Hurricane Sandy — after moving back home with her family two months ago in Shark River Hills, NJ, so she could record her new record in Sweden as planned, her town sufferened massive damage. The first floor of her house was destroyed and had to be stripped down to its insulation, but was actually one of the lucky ones as 23 homes were condemned and have to be torn down completely. Sadly, the storm also claimed Atkins’ guitars, record collection and precious family photos. In the Village Voice story about how the storm affected both her family and the Jersey Shore, Atkins said “My parents kept saying ‘Please Nicole, don’t come home. It’s overwhelming here. Stay in Memphis.’ And I can’t. I can’t just stay there when this is happening to my family and my neighbors and my friends. Every place that we grew up going to on the shore is just ripped apart or gone. I’m coming home anyway.”

Razor & Tie is excited to announce that Nicole Atkins has confirmed a winter tour in support of her upcoming album Mondo Amore, out January 25, 2011. The tour begins in New York on February 9th, and ends up in Philadelphia on March 10th. The complete itinerary is below.

The loose collective of musicians who assisted Atkins on Mondo Amore has now morphed into a leaner, meaner backing trio, now dubbed The Black Sea, who will join her on this tour. Nicole Atkins & The Black Sea will be supported on this tour by folk-pop duo Cotton Jones.

“Vultures,” the lead track off Mondo Amore is now available as a free MP3 HERE. Stereogum calls it “passionately dark, bleak, but not without heart – twisted and bluesy.” SPIN said Mondo Amore “expands Atkins’ sound,” yet “has roots in her well-crafted pop swells.”
