We were teased with a Nirvana “reunion” tonight with Paul McCartney. Thankfully, we didn’t hear Sir Paul attempt to channel Kurt Cobain on “Pennyroyal Tea” or “Lounge Act.” Watch him perform the new song “Cut Me Some Slack” with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear and make a donation to the Hurricane Sandy relief fund at 121212concert.org

Confirming widely circulated rumors, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana announced today that he will direct and produce a feature Documentary film, SOUND CITY about the infamous recording studio in Van Nuys, California. The film was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The console, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.

Through interviews with the artists and producers that created decades of musical history at Sound City, the film will showcase the amazing history of the studio, focus on the albums recorded there that went on to change the world, discuss the human element of music in an age of technology, and feature performances from many of the artists that called it “home”.

Grohl’s personal connection to Sound City began with the 1991 recording of Nirvana’s breakthrough album, “Nevermind”. Selling over 30 million copies worldwide, “Nevermind” changed the entire musical landscape and forever altered the course of Dave Grohl’s life.

Roswell Films, a division of the Roswell Records label that releases Foo Fighters music, will distribute the film. Key personnel involved with the film include Producer/Director Dave Grohl; Editor Paul Crowder (Dogtown & Z Boys, Once In a Lifetime, Riding Giants); and Writer Mark Monroe (The Cove, Once In a Lifetime, The Tillman Story). The film is also being produced in conjunction with Jim Rota, John Ramsay, and Therapy studios.

Speaking to both the art of music and the art of filmmaking, Grohl crafted the letter below to share his vision for the film. Information and future announcements related to the film can be found at www.soundcitymovie.com

Last Saturday in New York City, Jon Stewart led a “town hall” Q&A and chat with surviving Nirvana bandmembers Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Nevermind’s producer Butch Vig. If you weren’t there live in person, you could have listened to it on SiriusXM radio. If you don’t have satellite radio, you were pretty much S.O.L. until now. Take a listen to the entire thing below and watch a brief video. Also, head over to RollingStone.com for a recap.

VEVO, the world’s leading all-premium music video and entertainment platform, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s ground-breaking album, Nevermind, with an exclusive commercial-free 24-hour on-demand airing of the band’s 1991 concert, Live at Paramount. The high definition concert can be seen on-demand in most countries around the globe at VEVO, YouYube and VEVO Mobile on Tuesday, September 27 beginning at 12 Noon ET / 5pm GMT. A 24-hour encore will air Monday, October 31, the actual 20th anniversary of the concert.

VEVO’s 24-hour offering marks the first time portions of the concert, shot October 31, 1991 at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre, will be shown online. Live at Paramount is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film.

VEVO is previewing the concert stream with a performance of “Territorial Pissings” and “Breed” taken from the concert and currently available on-demand. Following the full concert offering on September 27, “Territorial Pissings” and “Breed,” as well a performance of “Aneurysm,” will be available across VEVO on-demand.

Live at Paramount is included in the Nevermind 20th anniversary deluxe set, which Universal Music Enterprises will release on Tuesday, September 27. With configurations ranging from a 4-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album, the 20th anniversary reissue unearths dozens of previously unreleased recordings, obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, radio sessions, studio rarities and live recordings, including the Live at Paramount concert available for the first time on CD, DVD and Blu-ray.

Released in September 1991, Nirvana’s sophomore album and major label debut elevated Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, Washington, cult band to generational spokesmen who’d unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Rising to No. 1 the world over by year’s end and ultimately selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind, would come to be much more than one of the most successful and influential albums of its or any era. As the album that returned unaffected rock ’n’ roll integrity and passion to the top of the charts, Nevermind would prove a singular inspiration to fans and musicians alike over the last two decades–and will undoubtedly do so for generations to come.

Released in September 1991, Nirvana’s sophomore album and major label debut elevated Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, Washington cult band to generational spokesmen who’d unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Rising to #1 the world over by year’s end and ultimately selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind would come to be much more than one of the most successful and influential albums of its or any era: As the album that returned unaffected rock n roll integrity and passion to the top of the charts, Nevermind would prove a singular inspiration to fans and musicians alike over the last two decades–and will undoubtedly do so for generations to come.

Now on the occasion of Nevermind’s 20th anniversary, Universal Music Enterprises presents a full spectrum re-release worthy of such a pivotal classic. With configurations ranging from a 4-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album, the 20th anniversary reissue of Nevermind makes the most of the occasion, unearthing literally dozens of previously unreleased recordings, obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, radio sessions, studio rarities and live recordings including a Halloween 1991 concert at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre in its entirety.

The limited numbered Super Deluxe Edition more than lives up to its name as one of the most expansive and ambitious collections of its kind. The Super Deluxe features not only the original remastered album and accompanying studio and live B-sides, but the first full official release of the pre-Nevermind demos recorded at producer Butch Vig’s Smart Studios, as well as boombox recordings of subsequent rehearsals through which the listener can actually experience “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “On A Plain” and others take shape before his or her very ears. The Super Deluxe also offers an altogether new perspective on the finished Nevermind album exclusive to this format in the form of the Devonshire Mixes: the album as produced and mixed by Vig as opposed to the commercially released final version produced by Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace. Rounding out the Super Deluxe are a pair of previously unreleased BBC recordings and the aforementioned 1991 Paramount show available for the first time and exclusive to this format on CD and DVD (which also features all four music videos from Nevermind), as well as a stunning 90-page bound book full of rarely and never before seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era. The Super Deluxe audio will also be available for digital download.

The Nirvana Nevermind 20th anniversary reissue is also available as a 2-CD Deluxe Edition featuring the remastered album and B-sides, the Smart Studio sessions, boombox rehearsals and BBC sessions, a 4-LP 180-gram heavyweight vinyl edition featuring the same 40 tracks as the Deluxe Edition, a remastered CD of the original album, and digital versions of the standard and deluxe editions. The Paramount concert, transferred from 16mm film and multi-track audio, is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film and will be available in a 1080p high definition picture and uncompressed 5.1 surround sound and stereo in stand-alone Blu-ray, along with DVD and digital long form video formats.

One of the best things about SXSW is that you can get to catch the truly special, once in a life time type performances that you wouldn’t see in Spokane, WA (sorry Spokane!). On Saturday, March 19th at 1AM, Deer Tick will be performing as DEERVANA. That’s right, they’ll be performing Nirvana songs. It takes a brave band to attempt something this daring. How will they do? You won’t know unless if you’re there! So make sure to be at the Lustre Pearl on 97 Rainey St. Once again, it’s at 1AM Saturday (Friday night/Saturday morning) so don’t miss it!

At long last, it’s finally here. Today, November 3rd, marks the release of Nirvana’s Live At Reading concert CD/DVD. Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine’s “100 Gigs That Shook The World” and voted as “Nirvana’s #1 Greatest Moment” by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana’s historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK’s Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock n roll. Now, fans will have an opportunity to own a pristine copy of that entire performance — color-corrected video from the original film with audio sourced from the original multi-track masters. Nirvana Live At Reading is being released in a limited edition CD+DVD Deluxe Edition as well as DVD-only, CD-only configurations on November 3, 2009, followed by a 2LP version on November 17, 2009.

While the show’s centerpiece was a performance of nearly the entire Nevermind tracklist, also noteworthy were early performances of three as yet unrecorded songs which wouldn’t be released until 2 years later on In Utero: “All Apologies,” “Dumb,” and in its first ever public performance, “Tourettes.” The career-spanning setlist also reached back to the band’s 1989 Sub Pop debut album, Bleach, for “Blew,” “About A Girl,” “School,” “Negative Creep” and first single “Love Buzz,” and even further back to the mid-‘80s for “Spank Thru.” Other songs from the Reading set would appear in studio form on the Incesticide compilation later in the year: “Aneurysm,” “Been A Son” and “Sliver.” Additionally, the band played a pair of beloved covers by two bands that helped shape the formative Nirvana sound – “The Money Will Roll Right In” by Fang and “D-7” by The Wipers.
