Willamette Week is thrilled to announce the lineup for MusicfestNW 2012, now in its 12th year of showcasing the finest in national and regional music in one of the most compelling urban areas in the country.

MusicfestNW is once again returning to the historic Pioneer Courthouse Square—Portland’s civic living room—for three picturesque outdoor headlining performances at Levi’s Pioneer Stage headlined by shoegazing alternative rockers Silversun Pickups (Sunday, Sept. 9), mashup superstar Girl Talk (Saturday, Sept. 8), and the world music-tinged indie folk of Beirut (Friday, Sept. 7).

Beyond the Square, MusicfestNW will once again take over the city of Portland for five days, with 150 bands playing at 16 clubs all over the city. On Wednesday, Sept. 5, electropop upstarts Passion Pit headline the Crystal Ballroom (the band also plays the next night) and reunited post-hardcore titans Hot Snakes play the Roseland Theater. Critics’ darlings Ceremony, Julia Holter, Lightning Bolt, The Men, Trust, and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart will all be performing special sets of over the September weekend. The festival also features alt-country act Old 97’s playing their seminal record Too Far to Care front-to-back, the beautiful folk tunes of The Tallest Man on Earth, local atmospheric rockers The Helio Sequence, rising hip-hop phenoms Danny Brown and Yelawolf, A-Trak DJing on the Nike Sportswear stage, and the debut of the Red Bull Common Thread series featuring guitar heroes Dinosaur Jr. with sets from the bands’ two offshoots, Sebadoh and J. Mascis.

Willamette Week is also proud to announce the debut of its very own tech conference to coincide with MusicfestNW. Portland has a rich and underrated tech scene, and in its first year, Portland Digital eXperience (PDX) will extend the MusicfestNW beyond music to embrace the technology and startup community by featuring conversations with leading thinkers, both local and from outside Portland. The event, held September 6-8, will focus on individuals who exemplify an “attention to detail, creativity, and the craft of building compelling experiences.” Among the confirmed speakers are Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co., Evan Doll of Flipboard, James Keller of Walmart Labs, and Chris Teso of Chirpify.

Previous MFNW performances include: The National, The Decemberists, Smashing Pumpkins, Modest Mouse, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, Explosions in the Sky, Sunny Day Real Estate, Spoon, Iron & Wine, M. Ward, Built to Spill, Arctic Monkeys, Cat Power, Panda Bear, Black Lips, Band of Horses and The Silver Jews.

Festival wristbands and tickets for shows at Pioneer Courthouse Square, Crystal Ballroom, Roseland Theater, and Aladdin Theater go on sale on Friday, June 1 via Cascade Tickets. Festival wristbands are on sale at two price points:

- $125 for an all-inclusive wristband that gets you into all three outdoor shows and the rest of the five-day festival.

Nite Jewel is pleased to announce North American tour dates with Chairlift, followed by a headlining date at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. Her Secretly Canadian debut One Second Of Love will be available March 6th. Nite Jewel will also be playing this year’s SXSW.

Nite Jewel, aka California native Ramona Gonzalez, first began her transcendent minimalist dance-pop escapades in the privacy of her own home in Los Angeles. With the aid of her multitrack cassette recorder and whatever keyboards, drum machines, and other instruments that were available to her, she very quickly developed her own unique sound – likened to that of a warped, lo-fi version of Late-80’s Freestyle Electro sensation Debbie Deb.

The One Second Of Love title track [available as a single now via iTunes] was recently named Best New Track on Pitchfork. They had this to say: “One Second Of Love reaches a new level. Whereas her previous recordings were capable only of hinting at Eno-like instrumentals, this song recalls them strongly, offering four minutes of funk-oriented pop with a crisp, galactic feel. Gonzalez’ voice booms over the snappy synth grooves, and a mid-tempo drum beat provides a cool, danceable sway.”

California native Ramona Gonzalez first began her transcendent minimalist dance-pop escapades in the privacy of her own home in Los Angeles. With the aid of her multitrack cassette recorder and whatever keyboards, drum machines, and other instruments that were available to her, she very quickly developed her own unique sound and began performing live in the L.A. area under the moniker Nite Jewel.

Later teaming up with Cole M.G.N. (formerly of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti), the Nite Jewel act became four piece live act, touring alongside the likes of Little Dragon, DaM-FunK, and James Blake. The Nite Jewel sound has been likened to that of a warped, lo-fi version of Late-80’s Freestyle Electro sensation Debbie Deb and has also found appeal among not just the ‘indie rock’ & ‘experimental’ crowd but also among avid listeners of hip hop, funk, disco, & soul. While very fond of these aforementioned genres and artists, Nite Jewel gathers much of her inspiration from the likes of L.A. Free Music Society’s experimentalist Tom Recchion, obscure UK new age electro-acoustic duo Woo, and the sublime ambient electronic music of groups like Germany’s Cluster and Italy’s Sensations Fix. Nite Jewel never hesitates, however, to cite 90’s R&B pop groups such as TLC & SWV as influences who left an indelible mark on her music sensibilities as a teenager.

Listen to the single “One Second of Love”

In 2008, Nite Jewel released her debut album Good Evening, recorded with the assistance of longtime collaborator Cole M.G.N.. Good Evening was met with critical acclaim, was taste-making record store Other Music’s fourth top-seller of 2009, and was featured on the Greenberg motion picture soundtrack alongside James Murphy, Duran Duran, and Albert Hammond.

Since 2009, Nite Jewel honed its lounge-pop-R&B craft across releases from Italians Do It Better, Mexican Summer and LA/Bay Area labels Gloriette Records and Human Ear, which lead to a wealth of refinement and bold directness in singing and songwriting. Yours Truly’s Love Letters Inc. will release the “She’s Always Watching You” 7″ in December 2011, with new songs that feature newly minted vocal styles – an extension of the clarity found on the title track of last year’s ‘Am I Real?.” On One Second of Love, the forthcoming Nite Jewel opus, you’ll find a re-imagination of Golden-era R&B pop; future-classic sounds alongside vocal sultriness. If Nite Jewel’s earlier work brought to mind the likes of Lisa Lisa or Debbie Deb on quaaludes, this new body of work may conjure up clearer images of the likes of Sade, Eurythmics-era Annie Lennox and Tracy Thorn. Pure, confident, singular but intricate and delightfully sophisticated. This evolution will all come to a head in March 2012 when Secretly Canadian releases One Second of Love Nite Jewel’s proper full-length follow up to her brilliant 2008 LP.

Check Yo Ponytail 2 is a monthly music event/party hosted by Franki Chan, Danny Johnson and Zane Landreth at the Echoplex. This month, the trio looked across the pond and brought over British electro-pop sensations Metronomy to headline this month’s installment, along with local acts Sisu and Nite Jewel.

The last time Metromony played in Los Angeles was in 2009. Since then, they have gone through some changes such as adding a live drummer in ex-Lightspeed Champion member Anna Prior and replacing original bassist Gabriel Stebbing with Gbenga Adelekan. Their latest album, The English Riviera (released via Because Music), received tons of critical acclaim, resulting in a Mercury Prize nomination. Last Saturday night marked only their second show in the States this year (they played New York last Thursday night) as well as their return to L.A. to a sold-out crowd.

Opening band Sisu was definitely a band that I was totally unfamiliar with. I noticed something familiar about the quartet, until I figured out that their vocalist/guitarist, Sandra Vu, is actually the drummer for noise-pop outfit Dum Dum Girls. Sisu’s music follows the pattern of this resurging goth/synth-pop sound (ala Austra, Zola Jesus), but the emphasis on heavier riffs and distortion from the guitar makes it a bit more shoegaze.

Under the moniker Nite Jewel, DIY musician Ramona Gonzalez has made her mark across the LA music scene. She’s played practically every venue in Los Angeles, from the Smell to the Music Box. Those that have seen her live know that she usually plays solo. However, when she came out with a full band, most of the crowd was pleasantly surprised. Her 80s-inspired pop tunes produced lush, ethereal melodies that surely put the anxious crowd at ease.

By the time midnight rolled around, Metronomy hit the stage to a roaring ovation as they jumped right into “We Broke Free” from their latest album. The slow-jam of an opener settled everyone down with a funky bass, swirling synths, and a guitar solo. They followed it up with “Love Underlined” that starts out with a more erratic rhythm, but came together into a more bouncy melody that served as a perfect segue into “Back on the Motorway.” From the first line of “I went and mess around with her heart” to the last line “but this carriage way can’t take me there,” the crowd sang along word-for-word as Oscar Cash ended the song with mean saxophone solo.

The mood got a bit darker and sexier with “She Wants.” Bassist Gbenga Adelekan’s musicianship stole the spotlight, giving the live rendition a funkier vibe to it paired with Anna Prior’s post-punk style drumming. The infectious pop-melody of “Heartbreaker” spread throughout the venue as the crowd threw-up their salutes in unison with the band during the whistle-blowing interlude of the song.

Metronomy sent everyone back into the disco era with synth-lead songs “Holiday” and “The Bay,” injecting euphoria to everyone on the dance floor and giving a literal, live meaning to the line “it feels so good” in the latter song. “The Look” was easily their most hypnotic song of their set, with its repetitive structure, catchy synth chords, and the echoing falsettos of Cash and Adelekan.

After ending their set with the appropriately-titled song “On Dancefloors,” the quartet came back out for a two-song encore. Before playing jazzy number “Some Written,” Mount took the time to introduce the rest of his band as they emerged from the back. If there had to be one highlight of the night, it was easily the fan-favorite “Radio Ladio.” Everyone was whipping back-and-forth, jumping up-and-down, and expressing their ecstasy when they sang “L-A-D-I-O!!!” And as they sang those letters, everyone with a heartbeat was instantly showered in foam, making the night even more memorable.

This night was easily the most fun I’ve had at a show since I can remember. Right from the get-go, Metronomy captured everyone’s attention and never let go as they took them on one hell of a dance ride. Joseph Mount’s friendliness and charm (like getting everyone to boo New York) and Oscar Cash’s subtle but groovy dancing really makes this band hard to hate. The decision of adding a live drummer in talented Anna Prior was a remarkable one. She adds so much to their live sound, making it more fresh, lively, and dynamic. I just wished they played “Everything Goes My Way,” where she takes over the vocal duties because she has an amazing and soft voice that contrasts nicely with Mount’s vocals. And Gbenga Adelekan brings enormous amounts of energy with his virtuosity on his bass and natural aptitude to get the crowd to participate in handclaps and sing-alongs.

I really can’t emphasize enough about their chemistry with one another and their ability to interact with a crowd. If you didn’t get a chance to see them play live in either New York or Los Angeles, there’s no need to worry about as they will be back in the States touring this October in support of The English Riviera.
