Owl City has spent the last 6 months or so off and on tour pretty much the whole time, and on 11/13/11 they brought their brand of electronic rock to Starland Ballroom. Opening the band was the young band from Virgina, Days Difference. Days difference is not a band I have ever heard of, but their brand of piano driven pop-rock made them a pretty perfect opener for Owl City.

Live they were pretty tight. Great vocals and a steady beat kept the crowd moving. I would say that they were pretty earnest, trying to connect with the fans. Their music seems tailored to young girls, which made them popular with the crowd at Starland that night. Frontman Jeremy Smith seems very comfortable leading his band and also very comfortable with his falsetto, which he uses often. Young and shaggy, they definitely kept the attention of all the girls in the house. And there were definitely a few songs that everyone knew the words to.

Owl City was next up. I didn’t really know what to expect. A couple years ago you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing “Fireflies,” but that is pretty much where my Owl City knowledge began and ended. When they finally did take the stage I was immediately impresed: backwall of multi-colored LED’s, keyboards, drums, violin cello, with Adam Young on vocals and mostly guitar. The lights really were spectacular, something above and beyond what you usually see at Starland.

I thought that Adam Young would be on the keyboards the whole time but he really led his band. With the exception of the previously mentioned “Fireflies” I can’t say I know any songs by Owl City, but it was pretty evident that I was alone in that. Every word was met with 900 kids singing those words right back. Young seemed really thrilled to be playing these songs that he wrote in his basement. His band sounded pretty amazing. I have a soft spot for violin and cello live, and the two girls playing those instruments did a fantastic job.

Young spent his time making the most of the stage, singing, playing guitar, playing keys and dancing between the lights. He wasn’t super energetic, but Owl City really isn’t music to rock out to. He drifted across the stage with the music, and the crowd drifted with him.

Adam Young is bringing Owl City’s catchy, energetic pop back to the States. For the past three months the band has been making its way across the world, kicking off the tour in North America and making their way through Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, with dates still remaining in Europe and Asia. Eager to continue touring in the US, Owl City announced the third leg of the All Things Bright and Beautiful world headlining tour – a string of Stateside dates in November with support from pop-rockers Days Difference. These shows will bring Owl City to new places and smaller cities for an opportunity to get up close and personal with old and new fans alike. Tickets for all dates went on sale September 10th and are already going fast. The tour begins in Flagstaff, AZ on November 2nd and will wind its way through the country until November 19th, where the tour will wrap up in Minneapolis, MN.

Young, the mastermind behind Owl City, released All Things Bright and Beautiful early this summer on Universal Republic. The album was the follow up to his hugely successful 2009 album Ocean Eyes, which featured the quadruple-platinum hit single, “Fireflies.” All Things Bright And Beautiful saw Owl City making his Late Night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, earned him an Alternative Press cover, and garnered raves from various outlets including USA Today, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly, proving that Young is here to stay. Young intends to prove that in every live show, bringing the upbeat, bouncy energy heard on his records to a new level that you can’t help but dance your heart out to. Hot Chelle Rae is proud to present the first cut of their video for “Bleed”, the new single off of the band’s debut album, Lovesick Electric. View the video here.

BUT IT IS NOT FINISHED…

Over the next few weeks while the band is on tour with Sherwood, the guys will be asking fans at their shows to write (or “bleed”) some short thoughts out on a scrap of paper, your hands, your feet, your ticket stub, etc. They will film the lucky fans and their statements, and each week they will update the video with the new fan footage. Once the tour is done, the video will be done. So, keep checking the site for updates, come see a show and be prepared to become part of Hot Chelle Rae history.

Keytar-wielding synth-pop sensation LIGHTS has extended her tour with Owl City. Beginning January 21st in Kansas City, MO, the dates will continue through May 2nd in Milwaukee, WI. The artists will also be making international stops in the UK, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

Twenty two year-old singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist LIGHTS crafts sparkling, otherworldly electro-pop that has already garnered her over 19 million plays on MySpace, a #1 hit in Canada and the 2009 JUNO for New Artist of the Year. LIGHTS was selected as an inaugural artist for MySpace’s new Introducing program, and she stars in her own short-form motion-comic series Audio Quest: A Captain LIGHTS Adventure, which airs on MTV and MTV.com. Rolling Stone called LIGHTS a “retro new wave…keytar-rocking pixie,” and the Toronto Star praised her as “the very epitome of D.I.Y. pin-up cool.”

LIGHTS has also released Ice Pack, an exclusive remix EP. The EP features six unique versions of “Ice”, an 80′s influenced, irresistibly catchy track off The Listening. The Ice Pack is available exclusively online at www.iamlights.com. The EP features a diverse group of highly respected artists and producers: Rancid front man Tim Armstrong works his magic on “Ice”, as does Nine Inch Nails/A Perfect Circle’s Danny Lohner. Underground UK remixers Modernaire (La Roux, MGMT) and world-renowned producer and engineer Mark ‘Spike’ Stent who has worked with Bjork, Muse, No Doubt and more also contribute. Toronto-based LIGHTS enlisted her Canadian peers as well: award-winning Vancouver hip-hop artist K-OS and up & coming songwriter and producer Colin Munroe each personalize a version of “Ice.”

The official LIGHTS store is running a special promotion where customers can get $5 off their order when they buy Ice Pack and any two apparel items. In addition, every order through 12/31 will have free shipping. Visit the official LIGHTS store at http://www.IAMLIGHTS.com/shop
