Today the lineup for the 2012 Virgin Mobile FreeFest presented by LG was announced by select fans who took part in a contest to guess the lineup on Virgin Mobile’s Twitter page (@virginmlive). The Billboard award-winning festival, known for the inventive and unexpected experience in addition to unforgettable performances, will be hosted again for free. The festival will feature some of the most talked about, most appreciated, most relevant and most eclectic artists – filling two Main Stages and the Dance Forest.
Virgin Mobile FreeFest presented by LG will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. The lineup on the Main Stages includes Jack White, Skrillex, M83, NAS, ZZ Top, Santigold, Alabama Shakes, Ben Folds Five, The Dismemberment Plan, Allen Stone, Trampled by Turtles, Portugal. The Man, Das Racist, Future Islands and Justin Jones. The Dance Forest will feature Above & Beyond, Porter & Zedd (Back to Back), Thomas Gold, Nervo, Alvin Risk and Penguin Prison, plus others to be announced. You can view the photo gallery of fans announcing the lineup on Virgin Mobile Live.
“After three years of crazy press and feedback, bands start to line up early to be on the ‘It-List,’” said Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P. and Virgin Mobile FreeFest producer. “Fortunately, since the tickets go in minutes, we can wait until much later than most festivals to book the absolute best stories of the moment.”
How to get tickets to FreeFest
Tickets to the 2012 Virgin Mobile FreeFest presented by LG will go “On Free” to the public at noon (EDT) Friday, Aug. 24, via ticketfly.com. Fans who choose to follow Virgin Mobile Live on Twitter (@virginmlive) will see a link to participate in the private presale, which will be held Thursday, Aug. 23. Virgin Mobile customers and prior Virgin Mobile Festival ticket buyers will get special notification of the presale in advance as well.
“We’ve had a really big year at Virgin,” said Ron Faris, head of brand marketing, Virgin Mobile USA. “Now it’s time to celebrate. FreeFest is back – bigger than ever. We can’t wait to share this free day of music with all our fans, especially the ones who helped us announce it.”
As always, fans will be encouraged to make a donation to The RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile’s initiative to end youth homelessness. Proceeds raised to date built Virgin Mobile’s new “RE*Generation House,” a homeless youth shelter developed by Sasha Bruce Youthwork. This year’s donations will open the house and provide support to a community of homeless youth. More details about this will follow shortly.
Last year Virgin Mobile FreeFest’s free tickets were scooped up in just minutes, and 50,000 people attended. In keeping with the “free” mantra, Ticketfly is waiving all service charges on free tickets when fans pick them up at Merriweather or the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., or print their tickets at home.
There will be a limited number of FreeFest “FREEMIUM PACKAGES,” which include admission to the festival, a charitable donation to Virgin Mobile USA’s youth homelessness initiatives, a FreeFest T-shirt, a souvenir cup that comes with free fountain drinks throughout the festival, and early admission to the grounds. FREEMIUM tickets are available via Ticketfly or at the 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion box offices.
“Virgin Mobile FreeFest is one of the biggest, most talked about music festivals of the year, and LG is thrilled to be part of this cultural phenomenon,” said Tim O’Brien, vice president of mobile phone brand marketing for LG Electronics USA.

The Afro-punk Festival is returning to Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park for the 7th Annual Afro-punk Festival on August 27-28. The 2011 festival has the most stellar line up yet with Cee-Lo Green, Santigold, Janelle Monae, Fishbone, Jay Electronica, Toro Y Moi, Toshi Reagon, Ninjasonik, Cerebral Ballzy, Gordon Voidwell, Reggie Watts, Res, Joi, Rocky Business, Straight Line Stitch and more to be added! In addition, the NikeBattle For the Streets Skate and BMX Competition, the largest street skate and BMX competition in NYC will return this year with the nation’s top amateur skaters and BMX riders in a competition to be judged by top professionals in both sports including Nigel Sylvester.
There are some very exciting new additions to the festival this year! Over 20 of the NYC area’s hottest food trucks and vendors have been brought together for the Afro-Punk Bites and Beats Food Truck Festival, which will bring cuisine from around the world and the 5 boroughs to the festival. In addition, Chef Marcellus Coleman, Executive Chef of Alias Restaurant in NYC, will provide his eclectic contemporary American cuisine to the festival artists, athletes and VIP’s.
Afro-punk has invited Harley-Davidson and Brooklyn Black bike scene documentarians, Denim and Chrome, to collaborate on a custom bike show featuring dozens of exotic custom bikes created by black riders in the NYC area. The custom bike show will also serve as the backdrop for the Harley-Davidson/Denim and Chrome 2012 Calendar, photographed by Darius Vick, which will featureexquisite tattooed beauties each month for bike fans across the country. In addition, the festival has commissioned an artist to paint over 300 skateboards as part of one large mural aka The Skate Artwall. Described by the New York Times as putting “rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music,” the Afro-punk Festival has become a Brooklyn intuition, the focal point for the burgeoning Afro-punk movement. Over the past seven years, the festival has presented new artists before they hit it big, such as Grammy-nominated Santigold, The Noisettes and Janelle Monae. Afro-punk mainstays like Saul Williams, The Dirtbombs, and Dallas Austin have also graced Afro-punk’s stages.

Beginning April 6 the deluxe package of Here Lies Love, consisting of two CDs of music, DVD with six videos and 100-page hardcover book, will be available both online and in stores. The record is also available as a digital download with 12-page digital booklet, a deluxe digital download with 53-page booklet and videos, and a double-CD with 24-page booklet.
Here Lies Love came into being when Byrne approached Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) about collaborating after reading of Marcos’ affinity for the clubs and discos of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
“The world of a royal court [is] surreal and, to my sensibilities, very theatrical,†Byrne notes, “but now there was an added soundtrack!†Byrne further elaborates: “The story I was interested in was that of Imelda’s rise alongside the tragic parallel story of Estrella, the woman who raised her as a child. I felt that this story was more universal, revealing and profound than that of the shoes—which anyway weren’t discovered until the mobs descended upon the Manila palace after the Marcoses fled. For me the Marcoses’ departure from the palace was the end of the story.â€

Superfly Presents and A.C. Entertainment are excited to announce the details for the Bonnaroo 2009 DVD. Entitled LIVE FROM BONNAROO 2009, the DVD will be released on December 15, 2009. The cost for the DVD will be $16.95. DVDs were initially made available to ticket buyers for the price of $10 including shipping and handling. There will be a limited number available for pre-order through the Bonnaroo website for $15 plus shipping and handling.
The pre-order link is here.
A trailer for the DVD can be seen here.
Bonnaroo 2009 was by all accounts a huge triumph with over 140 bands performing more than 200 shows, 21 comedians, exclusive film premieres and so much more. Media from TV to print to blog were on hand to report on what has become the elite summer festival of every year. The Wall Street Journal called Bonnaroo “one of rock’s best festivals,” continuing to hail that the 2009 lineup “fairly bursts with some of the most gifted acts in rock and pop.” Entertainment Weekly called it “the best of all sonic worlds,” while the New York Times said, “Bonnaroo’s very loose mandate – and a wise one for any festival – is to choose performers who deliver in a live performance, with current hits and studio expertise as lower priorities. One of the pleasures of the festival is that it defies narrowcasting: It’s not an Americana festival, an indie-rock festival, a gathering of 2008-9 hitmakers or anything but what its producers and, presumably, ticket-buyers are happy to hear.”
The new DVD was created to reflect the breadth and diversity of the Bonnaroo experience. It will feature exclusive performances and backstage footage of artists such as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Phish, Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Elvis Costello with Jenny Lewis, Andrew Bird, Coheed and Cambria, Rafael Saadiq, Santigold, Passion Pit, Amadou & Mariam, among many others. The DVD was directed by Sam Erickson of 44 Pictures and will feature original artwork and audio in 5.1 surround sound.

CBS Records will release a specially produced soundtrack for the hit television series 90210 on Tuesday, October 13. Soundtrack 90210 features 14 brand new tracks from some of music’s biggest names, including Adele with The Raconteurs, N.E.R.D. featuring Santigold, JET, Anberlin, MuteMath, Owl City, OK Go and Parachute, all set for placement in 90210 episodes during the 2009 – 2010 season.
The last episode of 90210, “To Sext Or Not To Sext†featured a brand new song from OK Go, “I Want You So Bad,†which marked the first placement in an episode of a song from the forthcoming soundtrack.
90210 executive producer Rebecca Sinclair and music supervisor Scott Vener listened to dozens of submitted tracks before choosing the ones best suited for the show’s upcoming storylines. Soundtrack 90210 stands apart from television show soundtrack which merely compile a selection of songs that were heard in a series’ previous episodes. Instead, this collection features all brand new and previously unreleased tracks that will be integrated into upcoming episodes and make Soundtrack 90210 a true representation of the show’s music sensibilities throughout the current season.
As Sinclair explains, “The music that we are using this season on 90210 reflects the show; it’s fresh, eclectic, passionate and fun. I’m thrilled with the wonderful artists who have given us all these great songs and excited to share the soundtrack of the show with everybody.â€
90210 airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. / 7 p.m. central on The CW.

(Press Release from last week)
Today, (RED) and Live Nation announce the (RED)NIGHTS series, an innovative slate of 26 live concerts in the U.S., which will raise money and awareness for the ultimate goal of eliminating AIDS in Africa. To kick off the series, (RED)NIGHTS artists, Santigold, Gomez, O.A.R., Fall Out Boy, Lisa Hannigan, The Veronicas andThe All-American Rejects will turn one of their upcoming concerts (RED).
“I believe no person deserves to suffer from a preventable, treatable disease simply because they can’t afford medicine,†said Marc Roberge of O.A.R. “If bringing awareness to what (RED) is doing helps one person receive antiretroviral treatment and live a healthy life, we have accomplished our goal.â€
(RED) will present the (RED)NIGHTS concert series at select Live Nation clubs and theaters across the country. (RED) and Live Nation are collaborating to link acclaimed artists with their fans to join the fight against AIDS in Africa. Information about the events already scheduled for the (RED)NIGHTS concert series can be found at http://www.livenation.com and http://www.joinred.com/rednights.
“(RED) was looking to engage more people in its mission, to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. The (RED)NIGHTSseries is an innovative concept that combines the power of Live Nation’s live music platform and venues to use people’s passion for music to raise awareness and, ultimately, generate more money to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.†said Russell Wallach, President of North American Alliances for Live Nation. “We’re building a great line up of artists for (RED)NIGHTS, and believe we can help (RED) successfully deliver its message by connecting them with music fans all over the country.â€
Bringing the (RED) experience to life in a new way, (RED)NIGHTS and the community of participating artists will come together to use great live music to raise awareness of (RED)’s primary objective—to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. With each live show, (RED)NIGHTS hopes to inspire fans to participate in (RED)’s mission, highlight the many ways to get involved beyond the concert and encourage people to share the message and experience with others. Ultimately, it is the goal of (RED)NIGHTS to build a community—of artists, concertgoers and music fans everywhere—that is passionate about helping to save lives in Africa. A portion of the proceeds of each (RED)NIGHTS concert goes directly to the Global Fund (theglobalfund.org).
“(RED)NIGHTS is one more way for people to become (RED) and support our efforts to eliminate AIDS in Africa,†says Jenifer Willig, Director of Partners and Marketing at (RED). “We’re so honored to have incredible artists turning their shows (RED) and look forward to bringing (RED)NIGHTS to fans across the country.â€
(RED)NIGHTS arrives on the heels of (RED)WIREâ„¢, the innovative new digital music service from (RED). The (RED)NIGHTS artists will join an impressive community of (RED) artists who are participating in (RED)WIRE, including U2, Coldplay, The Killers, Jay-Z, Elvis Costello, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Neko Case, Noel Gallagher, Conor Oberst, TV On The Radio, Death Cab For Cutie, Michael Franti and many more. (RED)NIGHTS and (RED)WIRE mark the first time (RED) has moved into the music arena and are a mutual extension of (RED)’s mission, whereby the music community is coming together as a vehicle to raise awareness and funds to help fight AIDS in Africa.
About (RED)TM and (PRODUCT) REDâ„¢
(RED)’s primary objective is to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds for the Global Fund, to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. Companies whose products take on the (PRODUCT)RED mark contribute a significant percentage of the sales or portion of the profits from that product to the Global Fund to finance AIDS programs in Africa, with an emphasis on the health of women and children. Current partners are: American Express (U.K. only), Apple, Converse, Gap, Emporio Armani, Hallmark, Dell, Windows and Starbucks. Since its launch in the spring of 2006, more than $130 million has been generated by (RED) for the Global Fund. (RED) money is at work in Swaziland, Rwanda, Ghana and Lesotho. For more information, visit JOINRED.COM.
