The Black Angels are excited to announce a fall headlining tour in support of their latest release, Phosphene Dream, out now on Blue Horizon. The tour kicks off in Houston, TX on October 13th and concludes in Nashville, TN on November 5th. Tickets go on-sale on August 5th. The New York Times recently caught the band headlining 4Knots Festival, noting the Black Angels “play psychedelic rock as if the 1960s never ended, and they are absolute masters of it.”

It has been a busy summer for the Black Angels, with appearances at Bonnaroo and Fuji Rock in Japan, on MTV’s 120 Minutes and NPR’s World Cafe, and an Australian tour. The band also hosted their ever-growing Austin Psych Fest for its fourth and highest attended year yet. This tour follows an incredibly successful spring headlining tour, selling out over 20 of the dates. Earlier, the Black Angels set out on co-headlining tour with Black Mountain in support of Phosphene Dream, which BBC declared “rock album of the year, if anyone’s counting.”

Phosphene Dream marks a huge leap forward for The Black Angels. It was produced and mixed by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Wolfmother) in Los Angeles, a far stretch from the cozy Austin studios that delivered their first two records. This new one presents a fresh take on the neo-Psychedelic movement they’ve been at the forefront of for years.

The Village Voice is excited to announce the final band line up for the inaugural 4Knots Music Festival on Saturday, July 16th at South Street Seaport. Titus Andronicus, Obits and Eleanor Friedberger will join scheduled headliner The Black Angels and performers Davila 666 and Oberhofer at the free, all day, all ages music festival.

Bud Light is the title sponsor of the 4Knots Music Festival along with additional sponsors of the event: XL Energy Drink, Metro PCS, Dialogue in the Dark, Bodies the Exhibition, Pop Chips, Institute of Audio Research and The New York Times.

Running between every borough of New York City and culminating near the South Street Seaport, the East River runs at a speed of 4 knots. The Seaport and Pier 17 have a rich and diverse history as profound to New York City as Wall Street, Central Park or even Times Square. Historically, the lower portion of the East River has been one of the busiest and most important channels in the world. This summer, there will be a new reason for people to flock to the area, which was once also known as the banks of the Sound River.

The neighborhood where 4Knots Music Festival will be held offers attractions, shops and restaurants for every taste. It is easily accessible by subway, car, ferry or bus.

A full run down of the day, including other on site activities will be announced shortly.

Last Saturday night was a night that I had been looking forward to for the last couple of months. Why? Because The Kills and Cold Cave were on the same bill! Certainly, both bands have the ability and fan-base to headline the Fox Theater in Pomona. Unfortunately only one band could take top billing for the evening, which belonged to the Kills.

As the crowd made their way inside the theater, the New York-based experimental synth-pop group Cold Cave made their way onto the stage as frontman Wes Eisold and company performed tracks from their latest album, Cherish the Light Years (via Matador Records).

The darkened stage and purple lights made Cold Cave appear like silhouettes that made it very hard to see the band members on stage. However, it was very apropos to their dark, new wave, synth-pop style. On “Underworld USA,” Eisold’s resonant baritone (think Morrissey and Dave Gahan) echoed throughout the theater as he hit his highs with great melody. The slower paced “Confetti” featured arpeggiated, New Order-like synths and crisp, reverberated guitars. As opposed to the electronic drums on the record, the live drums on “Villains of the Moon” were pulsating and sharp that made the song dynamic to go along with the beautifully layered synths. It was a great 30-minute set to start off the night. However, the lackluster crowd response was a bit of a turn off. Perhaps they weren’t familiar with them or haven’t listened to any other song other than “Life Magazine,” which they didn’t play.

Next up was Austin, Texas’ The Black Angels. I’ve seen their name pop-up more frequently across numerous music blogs as of late, but I never had the chance to give them a listen so I didn’t know what to expect from them. The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” blared through the P.A. system as the five-piece made their way onto the stage. Their set was one hell of a psychedelic experience. The bluesy bass lines were thick, the guitars swirled with heavy distortion, and the lo-fi vocals emphasized the “trippiness” of their set, engulfing the crowd in a sonic haze. But the real highlights came from powerhouse drummer Stephanie Bailey, who ferociously pounded away at her kit, playing crisp, tight rhythms and primitive beats.

Then it was time for The Kills to hit the hit the stage of the sold-out venue. The duo comprised of guitarist/vocalist Jamie “Hotel” Hince and lead vocalist Alison “VV” Mosshart formed the band back in 2000. Since then, they have been leaving their mark on the indie music scene with three critically acclaimed albums. And this past April marked the release of their fourth LP, Blood Pressures (via Domino Records), which garnered high praise from critics once again.

The Kills emerged from the back to a roaring, thunderous Pomona crowd and entered the stage that was decorated with sparkling lights and a leopard patterned background. They kicked off their set with an older song in “No Wow.” After every chugging riff that Hince played, the crowd followed it up with cheers of approval.

The majority of their set consisted of tracks from their latest effort such as “Future Starts Slow” and “Heart is a Beating Drum,” which feature Mosshart picking up a guitar midway through the song, delivering blistering riffs of her own. While on “Satellite,” Mosshart’s howls harmonized really well with Hince’s more subtle vocal approach, especially on the vocal melody of the song.

The crowd reached maximum insanity when the duo played classic songs such as “Kissy Kissy,” “U.R.A. Fever,” “Tape Song,” and set closer “Sour Cherry.”

When they left the stage, the audience’s demand for an encore was probably the loudest I have ever heard at a show. The Kills finally came back out and changed the pace with the ballad “The Last Goodbye.” Mosshart displayed a hint of vulnerability and tenderness, proving that she can sing graciously with emotion as Hince provided the piano accompaniment. They capped off the spectacular evening with a track from their debut album Keep On Your Mean Side, “Fried My Little Brains,” before clasping hands and taking a bow.

Overall, the entire show was very entertaining and flat-out great that feature bands that provided satisfying diversity in musical styles. The Kills just know how to take command of a show. With amazing on-stage chemistry, Mosshart’s stage presence (strutting, body whips, hip shakes) and Hince’s gritty, raw guitar riffs, they prove that they don’t need a drummer to captivate a crowd.

If The Kills roll through your town, here’s a word of advice: buy tickets A.S.A.P. and see them live!

Blue Horizon is excited to announce the release of the new Black Angels video for the latest single “Haunting at 1300 McKinley.” The song is from the band’s highly acclaimed third record, “Phosphene Dream.” Far and away the band’s most successful album to date, The Black Angels have been taking the world by storm, selling more records and playing bigger shows than ever before.

The video for “Haunting at 1300 McKinley” was shot in Paris, France, and was directed by Phillip Andelman, whose previous work includes videos by Rihanna (“What’s My Name”), Band of Horses (“Dilly”), The Jonas Brothers (“Lovebug”). He did this video purely out of love for the band. The stark black and white clip is incredibly dark, mysterious and unsettling. It starts with our hero walking down the streets of Paris minding his business until his world starts to crumble around him. Out of nowhere, he trips and falls to the ground. It then happens again as if he’s being forced to the ground. And then he gets thrown up against a wall and over a fence. By whom we don’t know. The strange and invisible torture continues until he becomes a bloody mess and tries to run for safety, but there is no safe haven. Not even in his apartment, which is where the video ends. The air of helplessness in the video heightens the psychedelic wormhole of the song’s groove.

View the video HERE (or below).

The album is currently on sale at Amazon for $2.99.

The Black Angels spent the past Fall on the road with Black Mountain in support of this new release, which Rolling Stone praised, claiming: “there are smartly layered riffs and echo-slathered melodies, and the Angels brighten up on tracks like ‘Telephone,’ a 119-second nugget that would have fit in on an early Kinks album.” Filter agreed, calling Phosphene Dream “face-melting,” while the BBC declared, “rock album of the year, if anyone’s counting.”

The Black Angels will hit the road for a national tour on March 31. Before that they will perform with Queens of the Stoneage at Rolling Stone magazine’s SXSW party on March 16, and have many other performances planned for that manic week in Austin.

The Black Angels released their latest record, Phosphene Dream, in September of this year and the response has been fantastic on all fronts, from sales to radio to press. Rolling Stone gave the record 3-1/2 stars, saying the “Texas Rockers channel bad vibes in good ways,” while Filter said it’s the “perfect album for those who want to take a trip to the dark side.” Pitchfork said Phosphene Dream is “a step up” as the band has “tightened up their songwriting” and finds the Angels “tempering its bad vibes with a hint of flower-power homage.” The New York Post called the album “glowing” and “hypnotic,” while Blurt said the band is “mastering the art of time and tempo shifts and consistently catching the listener off-guard.” The Baltimore Sun noted “At a time when there’s so much lo-fi, breezy indie pop, where hushed notes often reign supreme, the Black Angels were refreshingly loud,” and the Chicago Reader said “Austin’s Black Angels have the rare power to make me regret not owning a car-their music, which channels the Doors, the Velvet Underground, the 13th Floor Elevators, and Spacemen 3, would be perfect for a nocturnal road trip.”
