The War On Drugs are excited to share the brand new video for “Brothers,” one of the many highlights off their stellar Slave Ambient. Following the more kaleidoscopic videos for “Baby Missiles” and “Come to the City,” the “Brothers” video, which premiered this morning via NY Mag’s Vulture, definitely takes a different approach with its bleak western narrative. More on the “Brothers” video from the director team of Brewer, a pair of brothers (Ben and Alex), actually, is below.

“We kept picturing it as the soundtrack to a dark western like Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid or Unforgiven. That is where the deranged T.V cowboy character came from. We wanted the video to feel like the most exciting five minutes taken out of a longer movie. The biggest challenge in the filming was how to make the old cowboy (played by David Weindel) seem threatening, and how to make the nurse (played by Tallie Medel) seem like she was dealing with the situation the way a normal person might really handle such a nightmare.”

The War On Drugs’ “Come to the City” 7-inch single is available this week on Secretly Canadian. Listen to the b-side, “Don’t Fear The Ghost” – http://soundcloud.com/dojagsc/the-war-on-drugs-dont-fear-the.

2011

With over 60 shows played since the release of Slave Ambient on Secretly Canadian in August, and another 40 ahead on the calendar, The War On Drugs are proving to be one of the hardest working bands around. (If only their van could keep up!) The band’s December tour kicked off this past weekend, leading into a strong finish for 2011 – Lincoln Hall and Bowery Ballroom headlining gigs sold out and a Music Hall of Williamsburg show was announced yesterday; best of 2011 picks are rolling in from the likes of Uncut (#10), MOJO (#21), MTV (#11), American Songwriter (#24), Paste (#37), to name a few, and a slew of features have just hit the net.

This momentum is certain to continue deep into 2012 as The War On Drugs begin the year with their debut performance on late night television January 10th on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and add a spring tour with White Rabbits on the way to SXSW to their previously announced jaunt with Sharon Van Etten. This all follows the release of the “Come to the City” 7-inch single on January 24 and European tour in February.

As mentioned above, a bunch of excellent new War On Drugs’ tour-centric features have recently run online. Check out Pitchfork TV’s “+1” segment, which brings us back to that first show on the road following the release of Slave Ambient. Additionally, MPLS TV gives a further glimpse into the story behind the “Baby Missiles” video, and finally, SPIN.com takes us behind the scenes of The War On Drugs’ touring from 2011 with their photo tour diary feature. The captions are well worth the read!

The War On Drugs’ Slave Ambient is out August 16 on Secretly Canadian. Following the release of the instant classic, “Baby Missiles,” we now share with you album centerpiece “Come to the City,” where Adam Granduciel takes things next level. “All roads lead to me/I’ve been moving/I’ve been drifting,” Granduciel howls and moans over its constant beat, and his epic phased Firebird guitars. It’s a modern American outsider miracle; a straight up jam – inducing fist pumps and goose bumps, and the urge to play it again and again.

Philadelphia’s The War on Drugs, the vehicle of Adam Granduciel — frontman, rambler, pied piper guitarist and apparent arranger-extraordinaire, is set to release Slave Ambient August 16th on Secretly Canadian.

On their debut, the life-affirming Wagonwheel Blues, and the follow-up EP, Future Weather, The War on Drugs seemed obsessed with disparate ideas, with building uncompromised rock monuments from pieces that may have seemed like odd pairs. Folk-rock marathons come damaged by drum machines. Electronic and instrumental reprises precede songs they’ve yet to play, and Dr. Seuss becomes lyrical motivation for bold futuristic visions. Now, Granduciel has done it again, better than before: Slave Ambient, their proper second album, is a brilliant 47-minute sprawl of rock ’n’ roll, conceptualized with a sense of adventure and captured with seasons of bravado.

Slave Ambient features a team of Philadelphia’s finest musicians, including multi-instrumentalists Dave Hartley and Robbie Bennett, and drummer Mike Zanghi. Recorded throughout the last four years at Granduciel’s home studio in Philly, Jeff Ziegler’s Uniform Recording and Echo Mountain in Asheville, NC, the album puts the weirdest influences in just the right places. Synthesizers fall where you might expect more electric guitars (and vice versa); country-rock sidles up to the warped extravagance of ’80s pop. Instant classic “Baby Missiles” is part Spingsteen fever dream, part motorik anthem. “Original Slave” might sound like a hillbilly power drone, but “City Reprise #12” suggests Phil Collins un-retiring to back Harmonia. “I Was There” is Harvest rebuilt by some selection of psychedelic all-stars, while the shuffling, sleepy opener “Best Night” offers a band with too many ideas to be in a hurry. During the mid-album centerpiece “Come to the City,” Granduciel howls and moans, “All roads lead to me/ I’ve been moving/ I’ve been drifting.” Indeed, however unlikely that might seem, all these sounds arrive cohesively in one unmistakable place. Every song on Slave Ambient is instantly identifiable and infinitely intricate, a latticework of ideas and energies building into mile-high rock anthems.

“The War On Drugs made a totally serious album, shimmering and sprawling- it’s as inspiring as it is exhausting and dense”- The FADER

“Top-down, pitch-perfect car-radio rock. . . The War On Drugs have got it down to a tee.” – UNCUT

“On Wagonwheel Blues, the War on Drugs’ approach comes across as not only natural, but imminently worthwhile, as if these revered sources needed to be roughed up a bit to sound new. . . the War on Drugs aren’t just another indie band with arena ambitions. Instead, they craft a big sound for their big ideas, so that Wagonwheel Blues fills the space between horizons” — Pitchfork
