Starry Nights Music + Arts Festival returns for another great year in beautiful Bowling Green, Kentucky, September 28 & 29, 2012. The two-day, two-stage festival will feature a diverse lineup including Cage the Elephant, Portugal. Hailed as “…one of rock’s best young bands,” by Rolling Stone, Cage The Elephant had a successful 2011 with the release of their album Thank You Happy Birthday, a wildly-successful headlining North American tour and their critically acclaimed fall dates with the Foo Fighters. Their debut self-titled album was just certified gold by the RIAA and their current sophomore album Thank You Happy Birthday (RCA Records) has garnered the band rave reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone, New York Times, LA Times, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, People and Alternative Press who heralded it “one of the best rock albums of the year.” With performances on The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, it’s easy to see why Rolling Stone named Cage The Elephant “one of rock’s best young bands” and Thank You Happy Birthday as one of the best albums 2011.

A group of notable musicians from Athens, Georgia, have joined forces to raise funds for the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial (founded by Lois Pope) and the CSRA Wounded Warrior Care Project. The bands, which include REM, Widespread Panic (featuring Vic Chesnutt), Drivin’ n Cryin’, Bloodkin, Brute, Dead Confederate, The Whigs, Futurebirds, Ruby Kendrick, Hope for Agoldensummer and Gift Horse, have all contributed singles to raise funds for a planned memorial to disabled veterans on the Mall in Washington, DC and the ongoing care of our returning servicemen and women. The compilation includes both live and album versions of songs from each of the bands, delivered digitally on a pay-what-you-want basis. Music will be made available through the website woundedwarrioralbumcharity.com, grooveshark.com and creativeallies.com.

MP3: Dead Confederate – “Run From The Gun”

MP3: Futurebirds – “Battle For Rome”

The project was initially inspired by Dead Confederate’s single “Run from the Gun” which speaks passionately about the human and very personal cost of war.

“The idea for “Run from the Gun” originated while I was studying our mistreatment of Native Americans and looking back at how bloody our short history has been in the United States.” said Hardy Morris, lead singer of Dead Confederate. “The song, and this project, just grew from there as I realized that those same feelings I was having encompassed all wars, because they all have consequences that we don’t think about enough. Wars aren’t just stories in history books, dates on a timeline or names on a page. The human cost of war can be seen in fatherless kids, broken families, lost limbs and the victims we hide away in institutions or who end up homeless for the rest of their lives.”

The Chicago-based band Company of Thieves has announced the release of their new album, Running From A Gamble, due out via Wind-up Records on May 17th. To celebrate, the band is offering up a free MP3 from the album, in the form of the amazing track “Modern Waste.” (FREE MP3)

Running From A Gamble is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut, Ordinary Riches. Produced by Rob Schnapf, the 13-track album was written primarily by lead singer Genevieve Schatz and guitar player Marc Walloch. Of the album, Genevieve says, “The album is a coming of age adventure about the mysterious, passionate and painful transition from dependence and enchantment to autonomy and awareness.” The first single off Running From A Gamble will be “Death of Communication,” which hits radio this month.

Ordinary Riches was released in 2009 and landed at #5 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The band landed a spot on Last Call with Carson Daly where they performed their hit single “Oscar Wilde.” The band has built a massive fanbase from non-stop touring, performing headlining dates and also opening for bands such as OK Go and The Hold Steady, followed by duets with Daryl Hall on his hit show, “Live From Daryl’s House.”

Reviews of the album and live performances were nothing but positive. Entertainment Weekly raved, “Thanks to Genevieve Schatz’s consistently gutsy soul-chick vocals and her bandmates’ energetic arrangement…their technique can’t be denied.” Yahoo! exclaimed, “Hands down, one of the best debut albums of 2007.” The band is in the midst of a national tour with The Whigs (dates below)

The Whigs are excited to make their Tonight Show with Jay Leno debut August 12th. The performance comes in support of their latest album, IN THE DARK, which has been hailed by many for what Newsday praises as “blending melodies from 70s Rolling Stones and 80s Replacements with 90s grunge underpinnings to build a whole new rock animal.” The Athens, GA trio, who just completed a tour with The Hold Steady, will join the Kings of Leon and Black Keys for a series of dates beginning September 2nd. The band will also make appearances at this year’s Outside Lands, Bumbershoot and Voodoo Music Festivals. Tour dates below.
