Born 20 years ago out of punk rock will and unbridled passion, Lollapalooza—founded by Perry Farrell, festival visionary and lead singer of Jane’s Addiction–has rocked through the parks, amphitheaters and fairgrounds of North America before becoming an acclaimed destination festival in Chicago every summer, leaving countless memorable musical moments in its wake. Next year, the festival will once again touch down in South America with the second edition of Lollapalooza Chile in O’Higgins Park in Santiago, March 31 – April 1, 2012, and will venture across the continent for the first-ever Lollapalooza Brazil at the Jockey Club in São Paulo, April 7-8, 2012.

In a feat of cultural exchange last April, Lollapalooza Chile captured the eyes, ears and imagination of South America. In 2012 the continent will experience a double dose of this Lollapalooza magic when the festival makes back-to-back weekend stops in Chile and Brazil. The two festivals will share some–but not all acts–on their bills. Lollapalooza Chile and Lollapalooza Brazil will both welcome the Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, MGMT, TV On The Radio, Bassnectar, Band of Horses, Thievery Corporation, Peaches, Cage the Elephant, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Friendly Fires, Foster the People and Tinie Tempah.

Fresh from triumphing over the elements with this year’s Lollapalooza U.S. headline set of a lifetime, Foo Fighters are sure to turn equally dynamic main stage closing sets in both Brazil and Chile– performances that will mark the Foos’ first trip ever in Chile as well as their first Brazilian appearance in over a decade.

Festivalgoers in Chile will experience rare treats with Bjork and Avicii, as well as an eclectic collection of bands including progressive rockers Los Jaivas, the socially conscious Juana Fe, punk rock giant BBS Paranoicos, and the Chilean revelation of rockorgánico, Camila Moreno.

Lollapalooza Brazil will host the triumphant return of Jane’s Addiction and a special blend of iconic indie rockers from every region of the country, including Plebe Rude from Brasília, Wander Wildner from Porto Alegre and Cascadura from Salvador. “The people of Sao Paulo have been very active–twittering me whom they want to see in the 2012 Lolla lineup,” states Farrell. “Judging by all the requests, they are going to erupt. We really delivered for them. Now, I want them to show me how you party in Brasil!”

Both of these two-day music extravaganzas will take place in a gorgeous urban setting, with multiple music stages, an electronic tent, amazing local fare, and a Kidzapalooza area for the little rockers.

Lollapalooza Chile will return to O’Higgins Park in Santiago on March 31 – April 1, 2012. Discounted two-day passes are on-sale now, while supplies last. After that, tickets will be available at the regular price at www.lollapaloozacl.com

MORE TO BE ANNOUNCED!

Lollapalooza: Lollapalooza was born two decades ago when Perry Farrell, lead singer of fabled alternative rockers Jane’s Addiction, started planning a farewell tour for the group. His idea morphed into a larger-than-life musical roadshow that would bring music, culture and community to fans across North America, before finding a permanent home in Chicago’s historic Grant Park in 2005.

Lollapalooza was reborn as a summer destination festival, delivering an ever-more diverse array of 130+ artists from all genres on eight states. Widely considered one of the premier festivals in the world, Lollapalooza continues to thrive in the Windy City getting bigger and better with every year. This year’s gathering was headlined by Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, MUSE, My Morning Jacket, DeadMau5, Cold War Kids, and A Perfect Circle.

Perry Farrell is one of the most influential and original musical figures in recent history. Dubbed as the “Godfather of Alternative Rock,” Farrell fronts Jane’s Addiction which formed in 1985. Creating a new genre and musical movement, Farrell and Jane’s Addiction changed the music scene and paved the way for bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and STP. In 1993, Perry created Porno for Pyros, a daring evolution to his diversity and growth. As well as being a groundbreaking musician, he is the creator and founder of Lollapalooza. Launched in 1991, SPIN magazine listed Lollapalooza as the #1 tour that changed the world. Known for its musical diversity, Lollapalooza was instrumental in exposing alternative music formats to the masses and establishing a sense of commonality across a fragmented demographic. The first of its kind, Lollapalooza quickly established itself as a lifestyle festival, pushing the envelope and exposing concert goers to a subculture of ‘alternative’ living and art, and provided a platform for numerous environmental and human-rights causes as well. As a constant creative force, Farrell continues to push his own artistic horizon as a music producer, electronic music performer and visual artist, as well as a rock icon. In November 2011, he was honored at the annual Billboard Touring Conference & Awards with the “Apple Award.” Perry is the first-ever recipient of this award, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of legendary promoter Bill Graham’s death. Perry received this honor because Billboard recognized that Perry has always given fans special experiences, as Graham did before him (the “Apple Award” is so named because Bill Graham gave out apples to fans leaving Fillmore West shows).

Breaking from traditional festivals, the Virgin Mobile FreeFest presented by Kyocera unveiled its lineup for the award-winning festival, selecting relevant, important and eclectic headliners to represent this year’s free show. This morning, Sir Richard Branson, chairman of the Virgin Group, announced the lineup on Virgin Mobile Live, the company’s new Internet music stream available on Virgin Mobile Web sites.

The lineup: M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, T.I., Ludacris, Joan Jett, Thievery Corporation, Matt & Kim, Jimmy Eat World, The Temper Trap, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Yeasayer.

Dance Forest: Chromeo, Sleigh Bells, Die Antwoord, Modeselektor and Neon Indian.

“Because we have the luxury of giving away the tickets it becomes a privilege to book the most important acts out there,” said Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P. and Virgin Mobile FreeFest concert producer. “Our goal is simply to book the coolest bands we can. This year we’re breaking with the traditional format of monster headliner trickling down to baby bands, and instead we’re sprinkling fantastic acts all day long. It’s kind of like a festival on full-day shuffle.”

Virgin Mobile FreeFest will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. Tickets to the 2010 Virgin Mobile FreeFest will be available to the public on www.ticketfly.com at 10 a.m. EDT on Saturday, July 24. Virgin Mobile customers and previous Virgin Mobile Festival ticket holders from the past four years will be invited via text and e-mail to a private “free-sale” (much like a pre-sale, except free) to be held Friday, July 23.

“Last year’s free festival was all about giving back to fans in the wake of a horrible economy,” said Ron Faris, director of brand experiences, Virgin Mobile USA. “This year’s festival will focus even more on charitable giving. It’s a reminder to let people know that even as things are improving, there’s always someone out there less fortunate than you. Last year, we raised more than $80,000 and generated 30,000 hours of volunteerism for youth homelessness. This year, together with the fans, we hope to do even better.”

In addition to two main stages, a dance forest filled with inspired music, and a special second line march from stage to stage with Trombone Shorty, the festival also brings attention and support to homeless youth shelters across the country. This year, The RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile’s charitable initiative to end youth homelessness, is encouraging fans to make a $5 donation and in return receive a 2010 Virgin Mobile FreeFest mix produced by Rusko. The download will mash up select bands in the lineup to create a unique 20-minute mix. The DJ mix will be available for pre-order on Friday during the pre-sale with every $5 donated to youth homelessness.

In keeping with the “free” mantra, Ticketfly is waiving all service charges when fans pick up their FreeFest tickets at Merriweather or the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., or print their tickets at home. Last year, Virgin Mobile FreeFest’s 35,000 tickets were scooped up in just 30 minutes. This year, fans have the option of buying a premium ticket, which provides Pavilion seating, with a portion of the ticket price going to support homeless youth charities.

For more details on the ticketing, including options for donating money to youth homelessness, and to sign up the news alerts and updates, check out www.virginmobilefreefest.com.

“As the lights dimmed before [Matisyahu and K’Naan] came on, the only light still visibly shining was the (RED)NIGHTS logo illuminated on the walls, a symbol that even amongst something as bleak and devastating like AIDS and HIV, there is still hope.” James Boyce, Huffington Post

(RED) and Live Nation today announce new dates for (RED)NIGHTS, an innovative series of 26 concerts in the U.S. to generate money and awareness for the ultimate goal of eliminating AIDS in Africa. The new set of shows will feature concerts by (RED)NIGHTS artists Built to Spill, Thievery Corporation, Brandi Carlile, Ingrid Michaelson, Joshua Radin and Sondre Lerche at venues such as The Fillmore in San Francisco, The Paradise in Boston and the House of Blues in Chicago.

The new (RED)NIGHTS dates follow a successful first round of concerts, which earned attention in Rolling Stone, The New York Times, NME, Time Out New York and the Dallas Morning News. For the first set of shows, Fall Out Boy, Katy Perry, Gomez, Santigold, O.A.R., Lisa Hannigan, The Veronicas, Matisyahu and K’Naan each turned one of their concerts (RED) to bring the (RED) experience to life in a new way. At each of these shows, (RED)NIGHTS and the community of acclaimed artists aimed to inspire fans to participate in (RED)’s mission to eliminate AIDS in Africa by pausing to highlight the many ways to get involved and encouraging those in the audience to share the message and experience with others.

“I believe no person deserves to suffer from a preventable, treatable disease simply because they can’t afford medicine,” said Marc Roberge of O.A.R. “If bringing awareness to what (RED) is doing helps one person receive antiretroviral treatment and live a healthy life, we have accomplished our goal.”

Ultimately, it is the goal of (RED)NIGHTS to build a community—of artists, concertgoers and music fans everywhere—that is passionate about helping to fight AIDS in Africa. A portion of the proceeds of each (RED)NIGHTS concert goes directly to the Global Fund (theglobalfund.org).

(RED) presents the (RED)NIGHTS concert series kicked off at select Live Nation clubs and theaters across the country earlier this year. (RED) and Live Nation are collaborating to link acclaimed artists with their fans to join the fight against AIDS in Africa. Information about the scheduled (RED)NIGHTS concerts can be found at http://www.livenation.com and http://www.joinred.com/rednights

“(RED) was looking to engage more people in its mission, to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. The (RED)NIGHTS series is an innovative concept that combines the power of Live Nation’s live music platform and venues to use people’s passion for music to raise awareness and, ultimately, generate more money to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.” said Russell Wallach, President of North American Alliances for Live Nation. “We’re building a great line up of artists for (RED)NIGHTS, and believe we can help (RED) successfully deliver its message by connecting them with music fans all over the country.”

“(RED)NIGHTS is one more way for people to become (RED) and support our efforts to eliminate AIDS in Africa,” says Jenifer Willig, Director of Partners and Marketing at (RED). “We’re so honored to have incredible artists turning their shows (RED) and look forward to bringing (RED)NIGHTS to fans across the country.”

(RED)NIGHTS arrives on the heels of (RED)WIRE http://www.redwire.com, the innovative new digital music service from (RED). The (RED)NIGHTS artists join an impressive community of (RED) artists who are participating in (RED)WIRE, including U2, Coldplay, The Killers, Jay-Z, Elvis Costello, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Neko Case, Noel Gallagher, Conor Oberst, TV On The Radio, Death Cab For Cutie, Michael Franti and many more. (RED)NIGHTS and (RED)WIRE mark the first time (RED) has moved into the music arena and are a mutual extension of (RED)’s mission, whereby the music community is coming together as a vehicle to raise awareness and funds to help fight AIDS in Africa.
