Thomas Dybdahl, one of Norway’s most notable musicians, made his US full-length debut with Songsreleased July 12, 2011 on Strange Cargo, a new label created by multiple Grammy-winner Larry Klein in partnership with Decca Records/Universal Music Group. In celebration of his release, Dybdahl will join Tori Amos on the US leg of her Night of Hunters tour. The album is an intimate album of lush, intricately orchestrated pop describe by NME as “Norway’s answer to Nick Drake”. Listen to the nuanced album track “Cecilia” here and watch him perform it live at Paradiso, Amsterdam here.

Thomas’s songs linger with a suppressed intensity. Highlights on Songsinclude “From Grace,” a stunning pop song underscored by plucky acoustic bass and swirling drums, and “All Is Not Lost,” which flickers with Thomas’ earthy tenor and chugging guitars, dissolving into a hazy instrumental. Dybdahl’s sensitive croon glides over a playfully strummed guitar on “B a Part” while lead single “Cecilia” glides on echoing slide guitar flourishes and weightless, breathy vocals. For a taste of what you’ll hear on tour, hear Thomas performing several songs off the debut release on NPR’s All Things Considered and his Daytrotter session which went up today!

Strange Cargo’s Larry Klein has produced work by Tracy Chapman, Shawn Colvin, Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell and Madeleine Peyroux among others and has won five Grammy awards. Says Klein, “I’m honored to be a part of bringing Thomas’ music to the rest of the world. His work has an intrinsic emotional power, and reflects an attention to subtlety that I rarely hear.” Be sure to catch Thomas Dybdahl live on tour this fall with Tori Amos.

Tori Amos marks her debut album for Deutshe Grammophon, the world’s most celebrated classical music record label with Night of Hunters, set for release this September. The iconic, platinum-selling singer-songwriter continues her legacy of ground-breaking recordings with this 21st century song cycle inspired by select classical pieces spanning the last 400 years.

With Night of Hunters, Amos carries on the classical tradition of variations on a theme: taking inspiration from classical forms to create a bold new work while paying tribute to the mastery of the original compositions.

On Night of Hunters, which she wrote and produced, Amos comments, “I have used the structure of a classical song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story. The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter”

“One of the main themes explored on this album is the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us.” the singer explains.

The release of Night of Hunters will be supported by a tour in Europe and the U.S. starting in Helsinki, Finland on September 28th.

With more than 12 million albums sold and multiple Grammy nominations, Tori Amos is one of the most successful and influential artists of her generation. David Byrne and Fatboy Slim have paired up for Here Lies Love, a 22-track song cycle about the life of former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos and her childhood servant, Estrella Cumpas.

Due April 6 on Todomundo/Nonesuch Records, the album includes a 100-page book detailing the project and a DVD. In addition to Byrne and Fatboy Slim, Here Lies Love features performances by Santigold, Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine), Sia, Steve Earle, St. Vincent, Natalie Merchant, Tori Amos, Sharon Jones, Nicole Atkins and many others. Along with the recording, The Public Theater in New York City is developing a theatrical version of Here Lies Love for a future production.

Byrne is currently offering a free download of “Please Don’t” (featuring Santigold) at www.herelieslove.net. In anticipation of the record’s release, www.herelieslove.net is premiering five additional streaming tracks from Here Lies Love on a weekly basis along with each track’s corresponding chapter. The streaming tracks are “Here Lies Love,” “Dancing Together,” “Never So Big,” “Solano Avenue” and “Why Don’t You Love Me?”

Stream the song “Please Don’t” featuring Santigold below
    [mp3]/wp-content/mp3s/David Byrne – Please Dont.mp3[/mp3]

Beginning April 6 the deluxe package of Here Lies Love, consisting of two CDs of music, DVD with six videos and 100-page hardcover book, will be available both online and in stores. The record is also available as a digital download with 12-page digital booklet, a deluxe digital download with 53-page booklet and videos, and a double-CD with 24-page booklet.

Here Lies Love came into being when Byrne approached Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) about collaborating after reading of Marcos’ affinity for the clubs and discos of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

“The world of a royal court [is] surreal and, to my sensibilities, very theatrical,” Byrne notes, “but now there was an added soundtrack!” Byrne further elaborates: “The story I was interested in was that of Imelda’s rise alongside the tragic parallel story of Estrella, the woman who raised her as a child. I felt that this story was more universal, revealing and profound than that of the shoes—which anyway weren’t discovered until the mobs descended upon the Manila palace after the Marcoses fled. For me the Marcoses’ departure from the palace was the end of the story.”
