Ume today announced that they will appear on the season premiere of the Emmy® award-winning series “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations – The Final Tour.” The episode will debut on Travel Channel on Monday, September 3rd at 9:00 PM ET / PT to launch the ninth and final season of the acclaimed series.

The one-hour season opener starts in Austin, TX where Bourdain soaks in all that is good in the hipster hotspot during the 2012 SXSW Interactive, Film, and Music Festival. With a variety of musical artists as his guides, Tony enjoys a great week of music, fantastic food and partying with a bunch of cool new rock star friends.

While in Austin, Bourdain attended Ume’s packed performance at Hotel Vegas for the Brooklyn Vegan SXSW party. To quote Bourdain, it was “… a shitload of rawk in a tiny little room.” Bourdain also enjoyed some hardcore eats with the local trio, over dinner at the Barley Swine restaurant. Check out the teaser below for a preview of the band’s time with Bourdain.

“We’re big fans of Anthony Bourdain,” said Ume’s Lauren Larson. “We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to help show him what makes Austin such a unique place and honored he came out to see us play live in our hometown!”

Ume on No Reservations: Chicken Balls in Austin

Before Ume heads back out in the road in the fall, they will head back into the studio to work on the follow-up to their debut full-length album Phantoms. Ume will be recording their new album with Grammy® Award winning producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Cat Power, Queens of the Stone Age).

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Ume is Lauren Larson (Vocals, Guitar), Eric Larson (Bass), and Rachel Fuhrer (Drums). The trio’s music is one of beautiful juxtapositions: the loud and soft, the aggressive and eerie, buoyant melodies bursting through wall-of-noise dissonance. Ume explores the artier, heavier side of indie rock, post-punk, and alternative rock. Like a bridge between Black Sabbath and Bat For Lashes, the LP is heavy, anthemic, beautiful and mesmerizing.

On August 2nd, Austin based rock trio Ume played a ferocious thirty minute set in the Grand Ballroom of Webster Hall as a part of their tour with Helmet and Toadies. Ume filled the room with heavily distorted guitar riffs during their set which comprised mostly of unreleased material thanks to guitarist and singer Lauren Larson. The band opened up with one of their bigger songs, ‘The Conductor’ and from the first few notes played, it was clear that Lauren would not be contained to a small area on the stage. Whenever she wasn’t singing, she was flailing all over the stage, guitar in hand, dropping to the floor to continue playing several times.

While on records the band has numerous intricacies on their songs, those were lost in the live mix in favor of aggression and distortion. Eric Larson on bass and Rachel Fuhrer on drums rounded out the sound of the band, though neither could quite match Lauren’s energy. New material followed the opening song and like most of the bands material, it was led by intricate, yet distorted riffs. While the songs haven’t officially been titled, the working titles of the songs are ‘Battlehead’, ‘Chase it Down’, ‘Bass Face’, and ‘Slow Pog’.

The more familiar sounding ‘Xie-Xie’ and ‘Black Stone’ closed out Ume’s set that went by far too quickly, and the band succeeded in setting the bar high for the next two bands to take the stage. When Ume first began playing, the venue wasn’t nearly full, however more and more people filed in throughout their set and they all seemed impressed. Numerous member of the crowd made their way to the merch table after the bands set to buy Ume’s music and to chat with the band.

Ume’s setlist

1. The Conductor
2. Battlehead (working)
3. Chase it Down (working)
4. Bass Face (working)
5. Slow Pog (working)
6. Xie-Xie
7. Black Stone

UME has announced that they will be opening for Jane’s Addiction at the official Lollapalooza Aftershow on Saturday August 4th at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Ume was personally selected by Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell to perform at the SOLD OUT concert. Guitarist/singer Lauren Larson describes the exciting phone call from Perry:

“My cell phone rang while we were sitting by the dumpsters outside a club in Jacksonville, FL eating peanut butter on saltines. I’ve been dreaming of playing Lollapalooza ever since I was a kid in the early 90′s wearing my brother’s over-sized Lollapalooza shirts. To be called by the artist who started it all is surreal. One of the symbolisms of the word “ume” is perseverance and devotion. I’m glad we’ve stuck with this and never given up on our dreams.”

Ume is also excited to announce the second leg of their tour with the Toadies and Helmet set to kick off on October 18th at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson, Arizona. The tour includes a stop at the Fun Fun Fun Fest in the band’s hometown of Austin, Texas. Please see below for full dates.

Our favorite Austin band Ume is on a co-headlining tour with The Life and Times. Last night, the tour came through to the Satellite in Los Angeles. Our photographer Marcello Abmriz was there to get some killer shots of the band.

Check them out below and catch Ume on tour now with The Life and Times and next month with Helmet and the Toadies.

Ume today announced a run of co-headlining dates with Life and Times. The trek will begin in the band’s hometown on June 8th and wind down in Denver, Colorado on June 19th.

The band merges soaring fretwork with indelible pop hooks, radiant choruses, and front-woman Lauren Larson’s ethereal vocals.

“Distortion-heavy jams invite comparisons to Sonic Youth, but Ume do more headbanging and wailing,” Rolling Stone exclaimed while declaring them one of the 16 best, unsigned acts in the country prior to their signing last year. While critics will inevitably clamor for comparisons, Ume is ultimately a beast unto itself.

With Phantoms, their full-length album released in August of 2011 by Modern Outsider Records, Ume harnessed their carefully crafted chaos into ten tracks, capturing the unhinged passion and raw catharsis of their live shows while pushing their ever-evolving sound to impressive new heights. Like a bridge between Black Sabbath and Bat For Lashes, the LP is heavy, anthemic, beautiful and mesmerizing.

Ume has already garnered impressive reviews in the media. Nylon declared, “this band is ready to break out in a whole new way…A little like fuzzy shoegaze, raw garage rock and irresistible pop all rolled into one fiery package,” while Relix proclaimed the music as “heavy rock and ethereal indie pop with deft precision, finding new ground somewhere in between Warpaint, Metric and Mogwai.” Ume recently caught the attention of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain who attended and taped one of the band’s many packed shows at SXSW for an upcoming episode of his TV show No Reservations. To quote Bourdain, it was “… a shitload of rawk in a tiny little room.”

Numerous acclaimed artists have graced their stages, from The White Stripes and Yoko Ono, to Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes, and many more. This six-day festival takes place across numerous event spaces in the SF area, catering to upwards of 20,000 fans. The festival has expanded in recent years to also include art gallery shows, as well as a music-centric film festival, a pop-up shop, an art exposition, an album-inspired dinner series called Covers, a weekend workshop exploring independent culture called the Noise Pop Culture Club, and much more. With all of these events, Noise Pop has solidified itself as the true amalgamator of Bay Area culture, and continues to do what it has always done best: celebrating the independent arts with the city at large.
