Saint Motel, LA Weekly, 98.7, and Holy God will be presenting “Judgment Day” at the Roxy on May 21st featuring Saint Motel, Vanaprasta, and The Hundred Days. Harold Camping’s Family Radio has claimed May 21st 2011 will be the Earth’s “Judgment Day” and in honor of the occasion, Saint Motel, one of LA’s marquee indie groups, is hosting an exciting end-of-the-world-style party. The band will be showcasing their addictive summer anthem “Puzzle Pieces,” which has been making a lot of noise in the press and on stations such as KCRW, KROQ, and 98.7 in recent weeks.

Saint Motel is coming off of a great SXSW, including shows with Fitz & The Tantrums, Neon Trees, She Wants Revenge, and the Limousines. They recently sold out their 3rd annual Valentine’s show “Zombie Prom,” toured with Band Of Skulls and Nico Vega, and appeared on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic.” They are currently finishing work on new recordings, of which the first single “Puzzle Pieces” has been downloaded over 30,000 times in a matter of weeks, cracked the top 10 on Hype Machine’s Popular chart, and hit #1 on Hype Machine’s Twitter chart. Saint Motel is also hard at work on their new music video for “Puzzle Pieces” and recently finished recordingan episode of “Guitar Center Sessions” with Nic Harcourt to air this summer on DirecTV’s 101 Network.

“Every Saint Motel concert outdoes the one before,” notes tastemaker blog LA Record. May 21st will see them add another chapter in their series of epic events. Much in the vein of their legendary “Zombie Prom,” this event will focus the energy and community that are quickly building around this hotly-tipped band. Saint Motel will also be bringing their signature visuals to the Roxy on “Judgment Day,” for the perfect audio/video combination, created specifically for celebrating the end of time.Don’t miss an event that will be talked about for eternity – if we’re still around!

If you’ve been to CMJ and SXSW this past year, surely you’ve heard of the band Vanaprasta. Or maybe you saw them play packed shows in Southern California at venues like Spaceland, Cinespace and The Roxy. Perhaps, you saw them headline the Sunset Strip Music Festival at The Viper Room. If you haven’t seen them, we feel sorry for you. The good news is that the Silverlake alternative rockers are going to make their biggest splash yet at this year’s SXSW festival. They’ll be playing EIGHT shows. If you miss them, we seriously question your taste in music and decision making skills. Guitarist Cameron Dmytryk checked in with us recently to tell us a little bit more about the band. Check it out:

If you were to create a mixtape to describe your sound, which songs would you choose?

Cameron: It’s tough. I want to put a bunch of songs that we all love but I’ll try to answer more with songs of our own that put off the same vibe as these songs.

Muse – “The Small Print” from Origin of Symmetry
Frightened Rabbit – “Poke” from Midnight Organ Fight
Led Zeppelin – “Dazed and Confused”
John Lennon – “Oh Yoko!”
Phoenix – “Love Like A Sunset”
Yo La Tengo – “Pass The Hatchet, I think I’m Goodkind”

How are you preparing differently for this year’s SXSW compared to last year?

Cameron: We only had three shows last year, two on Wednesday and one on Friday. It was a little more laid back. This year we have about seven or eight as of now. So, definitely not partying like we did last year. By the time we were done Wednesday night, we didn’t have another show till Friday afternoon. It was a crazy free for all. We did a lot of press but there were a lot of open bars and long nights in Austin. This year it’s a bit more truckin’ around. We also want to see a lot more acts this year since we have an official showcase and we’ll have wristbands.

We’ll probably change up the set a couple of times, especially on Wednesday. We have four shows on Wednesday. We wouldn’t want to play the same set everytime. We might play some older songs that we don’t do or even try some of the new material that we’re looking to premiere at SXSW.

Which artists do you want to see at SXSW?

Cameron: Definitely on a national scale, we want to see the Strokes. I wanna see Odd Future really bad. James Blake, our bass player Tayler really wants to see James Blake. He’s playing in that church, it should be incredible. The Naked & Famous, Gobble Gobble, The Antlers who are playing some new material. We have friends that we want to see like White Arrows, Hands, Voxhaul Broadcast.

Which song have you always wanted to cover?

Cameron: Me and our bass player Taylor have always wanted to do an epic rock version of “Oh Comely” by Neutral Milk Hotel. It’s 8 minutes long and real slow and progressive. It’s just a gorgeous song.

Which song of yours would you like for someone else to cover and who would you want to do it?

Cameron: I would say the Section Quartet. I saw them the first time at Coachella in 2006. They’re this string quartet that covers rock songs like by Led Zeppelin and like Muse. I would want them to do our song “Three Thirty Three”

If you could put on your own SXSW showcase, where would it be and with which bands?

Cameron: Definitely the Belmont where we played for you guys last year. It was just fuckin incredible. We played at night when the sun went down. I remember seeing all the buildings on 6th street and you could look up in the sky and see stars. I haven’t seen stars in the city – I’m from LA- in a long time. With whom, that’s a whole can of worms. I’d have to think about that a lot more. For brevity’s sake, let’s just say the Belmont with a bunch of bad ass bands.

What do you have coming up next?

Cameron: For SXSW, we’re really promoting hard. We’re really excited about it. We’re gonna get in the studio for a couple of weeks right after SXSW to work on some new material. Then we’re hitting the road the first week of April doing the RUMBLE tour going from Seattle, Portland, San fRancisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Las Vegas, LA and the whole west coast.

The Roxy is one of my favorite venues on the famous Sunset Strip for bringing in small bands with dedicated fan bases, having awesome sound quality that rocks louder than anywhere else and the fact there is no such thing as a bad seat in the house.

The stage takes up almost a quarter of the floor space and makes it so no matter where you are standing, you have a great vantage point of the band. I stood in back for the duration of Saturday night’s KROQ Locals Only show and had just as much fun as those hardcore fans packed together towards the front of the stage.

After the opening band, The Smiles (http://thesmiles.bandcamp.com/album/hermosa-ep), Vanaprasta took the stage. There was so much hair flinging and rocking going on, the entire crowd was enthralled. With a similar sound to Minus the Bear, their instruments would play leading to a grand swell before the talented vocals of Steven Wilken came in on the tracks. I was impressed with his voice, he was hitting those difficult high notes and sustained the long, drawn out notes to bring an epic feel to much of their performance. The preformed a full set including “Minnesota,” “Skinny State,” and “Heathy Geometry.” For more of their music, you can stream tracks on their Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/vanaprasta) and buy their EP here

They finished their performance and the fans continued to stream in during the break before the headliner – Young the Giant. By the time they burst on the stage, the place was so packed you were pretty much stuck where you were standing. This show was extra special for them because it was their CD Release show, so the crowd was even more amped. They played tracks old and new, including “My Body,” “I Got” and “Apartment.” Part of what made them so fun to watch was the banter they had with the audience and even amongst themselves. They singled out the cello player, Sean Fisher, for being able to make it after coming straight from a wedding. They gave out two birthday shout outs to fans, and even dedicated a song to one of the livelier crowd members. They even did an improvised version of their song “Without Me,” adding in the cello to the 2nd verse just so Sean would have more to do. They were so energetic throughout the show, but for the final song saw the entire stage light up with frantic dance moves and the lead singer crowdsurfing while singing the chorus.

As for their music, it’s hard for me to think of an adequate comparison. The vocals kind of remind me of Brandon Flowers, but the music doesn’t fit that. There’s a touch of Interpol and The Walkmen, but I already like Young the Giant more. The best thing to do is to just listen to their music. You can stream their music at their Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/youngthegiant), buy the album they just released on iTunes. Check out their video for “My Body” below:

Los Angeles experimental rock quintet Vanaprasta will be releasing a 7-inch vinyl featuring the tracks Skinny State and Minnesota from their forthcoming full-length record Healthy Geometry on September 27th. The 7-inch can be pre-ordered HERE at a discounted price until the 27th.

Healthy Geometry explores the expansive landscape of the band’s musical influences. Vanaprasta’s heavy, bluesy riffs mesh with angular guitars, three part harmonies, pounding rhythms and ethereal sounds. The exhilarating end result is one cohesively and expertly crafted album. Having recorded the majority of the record in Portland and at some of the most prestigious studios in Los Angeles, the band still wasn’t able to capture the exact sound they were looking for. Into the picture walks Manny Nieto (HEALTH, The Breeders).

“Manny ended up taking our record and bringing all the tones out of the mix with this amazing room sound he has learned to use. The result was us immediately sounding bigger, trashier and much more raw. Minnesota and Skinny State were two of three tracks that were completely recorded in Manny’s studio. I think the 7 inch shows a level that we wanted to take our music to that we would have never been able to get to unless we worked with Manny,“ says guitarist Collin Desha. To top it off, the record was mastered by another well-known LA local Dave Cooley (Silversun Pickups, Local Natives).

Having formed in 2008, Vanaprasta have quickly become one of the most exciting and buzzed about bands in Los Angeles, due to their explosive live shows and critically acclaimed debut EP “Forming the Shapes.” Vanaprasta were an LA Weekly top pick for the Sunset Strip Music Festival, where they shared the bill with legendary rockers The Smashing Pumpkins and Slash along with up and comers Neon Trees and Semi Precious Weapons.

Vanaprasta will be continuing their Monday night residency at the Echo for the month of September and will be playing Healthy Geometry in its entirety on the 27th.

SXSW is the craziest, busiest music festival in the country. In addition to all the networking, conferences, industry panels, you have concerts.. during the day, night, and overnight. Then there are parties, during the day, night and overnight and super late night/early morning. Over the next few days, we’ll have some recap posts for you as well as some features on specific shows and exclusive interviews! Stay tuned!

We arrived into Austin late afternoon on Wednesday the 17th. If you have any questions as to whether Austin is a music town, there was a SXSW banner at the escalator at the airport and statues of guitars near the baggage claim.

Upon getting into downtown, we headed immediately over to our Manic Fest Destiny Party which featured over 40 bands! The event was a massive success thanks to Tijuana Gift Shop, Exotic Recordings, Sideways Media, and Half Door Records. Not only was the event at the extravagant Belmont, it was free and open to the public. Some of the stand out bands included Austin’s own The Black And White Years. The Black And White Years are super catchy indie dance rock slightly reminiscent of Tears For Fears. Check out some photos below thanks to Bridget Maher of Rockpit.com

We also caught The Art Of Shooting who remind us of Tori Amos/Poe if they rocked out a little harder. A highlight of the band’s set was catching their cover of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls.” Make sure to catch them at Piano’s in NYC on April 27th for their CD release show!

Next, we saw Middle Distance Runner from Washington, DC. Think of Arcade Fire with a little more fire and soul. Check out some photos below and make sure to catch them Tuesday April 6th at Jammin Java as they compete to perform at DC101′s Chili Cookoff in May.

The last band that we caught at our awesome Manic Fest Destiny Party was California’s own Vanaprasta. If Kings Of Leon were from Silver Lake, they’d sound like Vanaprasta. Expect big things from these guys this year. Catch them next April 9th at the Beauty Bar in San Diego.

In order to make sure that we caught a little bit of everything, we went over to the Speakeasy to see Tabi Bonney who was great. For rockers like us, Tabi Bonney was a lot of fun to watch. He’s not hardcore rap but alternative hip hop. (apologies for the low quality cell phone pic!)

A little later in the Kabaret room at Speakeasy, we tried to see/hear the mad hyped Madlib. Unfortunately, the place was so packed and the volume was so low that we didn’t really get to truly enjoy the experience. Either way, it was cool to catch some different music.

To say that we were beat from our connecting flights and over 7 hours of music would be an understand. Stay tuned for Day 2 coverage.

Vanaprasta formed in December of 2008, and the Los Angeles/Silver Lake experimental rock quintet has already generated a swift buzz through their blood-stirring live act and critically acclaimed debut Forming the Shapes EP. The band recently earned an LA Times Top Pick, and examiner.com designated their forthcoming LP Healthy Geometry as one of the most anticipated albums of 2010.

Vanaprasta – Collin Desha, Steven Wilkin, Taylor Brown, Cameron Dmytryk, and Ben Smiley – traveled to Portland to record the bulk of their album over the summer and fall of 2009. The band released Forming the Shapes EP as a precursor to these sessions on March 2nd. The 3 song EP showcases “their dramatic blend of churning rhythms, bright riffage and glowing imagery” (Kevin Bronson, buzzbands.la).

Vanaprasta‘s live shows and recorded tracks feature aggressive guitar interaction, abrupt shifts in tempo and time signature, tandem drumming, and soaring vocals. The band is influenced by various sounds, such as the bluesy monstrous riffs of Dark Side of the Moon to the slurred guitar of The Moon & Antarctica. Their sound also draws influence from the driving rhythms of Silent Alarm, the funk of bloodsugarsexmagik, and the raw three part guitarmonies from The Bends.
