After a brief break from their worldwide touring schedule, Dropkick Murphys will hit the road again this week for U.S. dates in Reno (August 5) and Las Vegas (August 6) and a stint on the Vans Warped Tour from August 7-15.

Dropkick Murphys–Ken Casey (vocals, bass guitar), Al Barr (vocals), Matt Kelly (drums, backing vocals), James Lynch (guitar, backing vocals), Tim Brennan (guitar, accordion, piano, backing vocals), Jeff DaRosa (mandolin, accordion, banjo, bouzouki, tin whistle, acoustic guitar) and Scruffy Wallace (bagpipes)–are touring in support of their Live On Lansdowne, Boston MA CD/DVD (Born & Bred Records/ILG), which captures the intensity and camaraderie of 2009’s sold-out St. Patrick’s Day week hometown shows in Boston. Following in the tradition of 2002’s Live On St. Patrick’s Day From Boston MA–which has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide–Live On Lansdowne features an entirely different 20-song set list, including the group’s platinum-selling single “I’m Shipping Up To Boston.”

While on tour, Dropkick Murphys have received widespread acclaim for their live shows. Here’s a sample below:

“The Celtic punk band played an energetic set with songs like ‘God Willing,’ ‘Fields of Athenry’ and ‘I’m Shipping Up to Boston’ in Sunday’s afternoon’s brutal climate.”
–Brian Mansfield, USAToday.com, June 14, 2010 (Bonnaroo coverage)

“…There were righteous odes to the working man—including a revved up cover of the classic, still-blistering ‘Which Side Are You On?’—and tributes to our armed forces. Hardscrabble fighter ‘Irish’ Micky Ward got his due with ‘The Warrior’s Code.’ Breakneck punk rock songs that managed to highlight an irresistible melody inside the swirl of power chords and catharsis—as on ‘Sunshine Highway’ and ‘As One’—were well represented…As the band’s records have grown more nuanced over the years, so have its shows with layers of instrumental flavors–a melancholy barroom piano, a rich string quartet, a pas de deux for banjo and accordion, the wheeze and flutter of bagpipes and tin whistle–more ably mixed into the proceedings…Toss in ringleted step dancers–one of whom sang along with infectious glee while high kicking–and the one-two punch of Al Barr and Casey’s lovably gruff shout-singing and you can see and hear why some traditions endure.” –Sarah Rodman, Boston Globe, March 15, 2010

“…there were kids as young as 5 and seniors as old as 87 at the sold-out House of Blues…Dropkick Murphys play a harsh and frenzied brand of fist-in-the-air Celtic punk rock. It just happens to be fun for the whole family.” –Jim Sullivan, Boston Herald, March 14, 2010

“…the Murphys raged for a sold-out, psychotically amped-up crowd…the Murphys did what they do best: put on a kick-ass, raw-boned rock show…Onstage, young girls in brightly colored Irish step-dancing costumes hopped and jigged, while beer and sweat flew in the circle pit as would-be crowd surfers momentarily caught air before crashing back into the melee…When Casey roared the opening lines to ‘Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya,’ everyone in the house joined in on the chorus, howling ‘hurroo, hurroo’ with what felt a little like love.” –Alexandra Cavallo, Boston Phoenix, March 18, 2010

“…a party it’s impossible not to enjoy.” –Paul Travers, Kerrang!, May 1, 2010

In other news, Dropkick Murphys continue their work with The Claddagh Fund (www.claddaghfund.org), the charity established by DKM founding member Ken Casey in support of non-profits that champion the causes of children, veterans and those suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. The First Annual Claddagh Fund Celebrity Golf Tournament co-hosted by NHL Hall Of Famer Bobby Orr will take place September 10 in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Play is offered at two incredible courses: The Golf Club of Cape Cod and Ballymeade Country Club, with an awards reception dinner to follow with prizes, an auction, and a shoot out finale with the top shooters from both courses. Ken Casey and co-host Bobby Orr will be joined by additional celebrity guests at the event which will raise money for The Claddagh Fund.

SideOneDummy Records is excited to announce the September 21 release of Real Ghosts Caught On Tape, the sophomore album from Naples, FL’s Fake Problems. Fake Problems are back and have successfully reinvented themselves again with their most accomplished album to date, an album that draws influence from a wide variety indie-rock, ’60s girl-groups, and Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’ production style.

Real Ghosts Caught On Tape was produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero) in the Spring of 2010 in Los Angeles, CA. The bright and beachy environment of Southern California shines through on the record, as does the reserved and understated vibe of these songs, such as the eerie “Songs for Teenagers” where Chris Farren poignantly delivers “Looking for drugs in all the wrong places, wanted to be famous but ended up nameless.”

Lead single, “Soulless,” is carefully crafted with lush O’s and A’s in the vein of Phil Spector’s ’60s girl-group projects. Lending their backing vocals were longtime friends and fans Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat from the critically-acclaimed television series Arrested Development. As Farren sings “I was Soulless, Soulless, broken-down, I was hollow as a Ghost, but you have brought me back to life and revived the hope” you can tell Farren has lived through each line and syllable he so tastefully delivers. If nothing else, Real Ghosts Caught On Tape is the perfect soundtrack for embarking out of darkness and into the light, showcasing a band that has grown to new artistic heights.

Fake Problems are currently performing on the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, and are certainly one of the more “left of center” bands on the tour, which has enabled them to captivate old and new fans alike as well as make new friends in each city. Fake Problems will also be supporting The Gaslight Anthem on their Fall tour in September and October. More dates for that tour to be announced shortly.

Having just spent the last month on this summer’s Vans Warped Tour, Fueled By Ramen road warriors The Swellers hit the highway once again. The Flint, MI-based band will join Fireworks alongside Man Overboard and Transit this month on tour. Kicking off August 12th in Traverse City, MI, the tour will crisscross the county including Canada, wrapping on October 1st in Detroit. In addition, The Swellers will be a part of this fall’s Riot Fest on October 9th in Chicago. (Full dates below)

The Swellers joined Fueled By Ramen just over a year ago and have proven themselves to be an aggressive and hard-working live act. The band has been on the road nearly non-stop over the last four years, touring alongside the likes of Less Than Jake, Motion City Soundtrack, and labelmates Paramore. The Swellers also recently visited Europe for a handful of festival shows this past spring, including the Give It A Name Festival in Munich, Milan, and Vienna, as well as the Groezrock Festival in Belgium.

“UPS AND DOWNSIZING,” The Swellers’ Fueled By Ramen debut, was named one of the best albums of 2009 by both Absolute Punk and Punk News. “The Swellers have topped their Everest and written an album that might just be the perfect balance of melodic & pop punk since [Green Day’s] Dookie,” gushed Absolute Punk, while Punk News raved it’s “without a doubt, the best thing FBR has released since the days when the Stereo, Jimmy Eat World and the Impossibles dominated the label’s landscape.”

I love going to shows (duh, it’s why I have this sweet gig). There is awesome music, fun shenanigans, and a communal feeling in the audience that we’re all in this together, experiencing the epic epicness in front us. These have been some of the best shows I’ve ever been to. And yet, that was not my experience at the Motion City Soundtrack set.

Now disclaimer time, I really dig Motion City Soundtrack. I usually have a track or two on my ipod and will occasionally quote lyrics on my blog, facebook, etc., what have you. So I was pretty psyched to see them live. Got there early like the nerd I am so I could be close to the front and see everything. They were behind schedule and the set was at noon, on a ridiculously hot day at an outdoor venue. Needless to say unconscious kids were being escorted to the medic tent before the set even started. People were passing the eff out. Umm, problem.

When they finally do come out, the crowd essentially bum rushes the barricade to get closer. I get it, you’re excited, but calm down. Everyone is singing along it is generally a good time had by all. They are singing songs from all their albums (3), the crowd is going wild, absolutely out of control. Then the crowd surfing starts.

Now, crowd surfing and moshing is fun, but this was neither. Even this being thrown across the crowd derivative could be fun too, IF THERE WAS SOMEONE TO CATCH YOU. People were being thrown into holes in the crowd. I apparently was supposed to catch someone with the back of my head. I have never feared for peoples’ lives at a concert before that set. It was such a blatant disregard for the well being of others. Usually when we go to concerts the camaraderie of being there together (and the fact that it is an actual person you’ve got in your hands) keeps people from being jerks about the crowd surfing. People get up safely, people get down safely. The irony of the whole thing is Justin Pierre (frontman) is plugging some kind of program linked on their site to good for others, just to do good. Um, you mean like not dropping your fellow concert attendee on the concrete? Yeah, MCS: Fail.

The Mayday Parade set was insanity. First there were people crowding the stage as soon as the previous set was finished (sorry Dinner and a Suit). Not only that, but people were climbing into trees and on top of port-a-potties for a view. Let me repeat that: port-a-potties, on top. Perhaps they should have been playing a stage bigger than the Ernie Ball Stage because there was not enough room. So much so that when a kid started a mosh pit, people chewed him out because there literally was not room, and no one wanted to mosh with him. He looked like he was having a violent seizure.

The band came out in parade fashion to the Imperial March from Star Wars. That got the crowd excited. Two guitarists, a bassist, drummer, and a singer/keyboardist comprise the Florida quintet who have mastered the pop rock sound. They just released their major label debut album on Atlantic Records but have two previous albums (one is an EP). The bass lines are heavy and the drums are piercing matched with the guitar riffs and keyboards it is a great sound.

The audience kept pushing forward during the set to get in as close as possible. And when the set was done they were calling for an encore. Something leads me to believe that they don’t know how festivals work.

But it was a good time had by all, except maybe the people on top of the port-a-potties.

Hey, Monday!

So I was really excited to see Hey Monday live. Cassadee Pope is known to have an amazing voice so I was pumped to see this go down and see firsthand. I must say this that within the first song, surprised even. Either Ms. Pope is the best vocalist of our time to be able to run all over the stage and not miss a note or take and audible deep breath or something else is in play; a vocal track perhaps? I would rather my performances be raw and real then perfect pitch. It takes away from the experience if it is not truly live. I can’t plainly assume because I have no proof. However such practices are not new to Warped tour.

There was amazing energy during the show, but after I realized the set was suspicious it was kind of ruined for me, sadly. Luckily all was redeemed during the We The Kings set when Cassadee joined Travis on stage and sang acoustic. Let’s just say the girl has a set of pipes on her.

While they were not on the main stage, it was still comparable as was their audience. They got a lot of adorable fans. So luckily the Florida quartet brought a good show that was full of energy and the charm.
