Along with Steel Train, the band simultaneously released a digital companion album featuring each of the new record’s twelve tracks reinterpreted, re-imagined and remixed by a star-studded cast of some of contemporary music’s most heralded female artists. Entitled Terrible Thrills Vol. 1, the companion disc includes covers by Scarlett Johansson, Tegan & Sara, Amanda Palmer, Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian, Holly Miranda and others.

Known for their high-octane, unhinged live performances, Steel Train has been praised by Esquire, SPIN, Rolling Stone, Relix, Alternative Press, USA Today and others for their versatile, anthemic and infectious brand of rock and roll that’s garnered comparisons to Arcade Fire, The Hold Steady and Bruce Springsteen.

Manchester Orchestra opened up the first of two WRXP holiday concerts last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. “Matt Pinfield’s Holiday Extravaganza” had an interesting mix of bands: Manchester Orchestra, Jack’s Mannequin, Passion Pit and Phoenix. The only unfortunate part about the show is that we’d only be treated to merely a half hour of Manchester Orchestra. For those of us who arrived early, Manchester Orchestra put on an intense set of five stadium anthemic alternative rock songs including the band’s hit “I’ve Got Friends.” For what the band may have lacked in their stage presence, they more than made up with their sound. Hidden underneath a beard, semi-long hair and a winter knit hat, Andy Hull sang with such angst and passion that had us recalling the long forgotten Seattle sound (fyi, the guys are from Atlanta) that we fell in love with years ago. For the young crowd that was anxiously awaiting Jack’s Mannequin, Manchester Orchestra isn’t your favorite band now, but they will be.

Last night, we had the chance to attend WRXP Matt Pinfield’s Holiday Extravaganza Ball. Though the show was a bit lacking in holiday spirit, no one really cared as there was a solid lineup of rock bands. Headlining the show was perhaps the most popular indie rock band in America right now, Phoenix. Prior to taking the stage, Glassnote Records CEO Daniel Glass informed the band that they had been nominated for the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy. Is this why we saw one of the best performances of the year from Phoenix or is this what every show is like from them? Opening with their current single “Lisztomania”, lead singer Thomas Mars and company had Hammerstein Ballroom in an hour long danceathon and celebration. Seeing Phoenix live last night was like seeing Bloc Party or The Killers for the first time (no, we’re not old enough to compare them to see Nirvana or Led Zeppelin alive although several audience members seemed too old to be anyone’s dad). You knew that you were seeing something special and epic. Thomas Mars seemed to marvel at how popular the band had become as everyone sang and danced to every song. Mars, himself, even went into the audience on a few occasions singing an extra chorus of the band’s smash hit and closing number “1901″ laying almost backfirst in a sea of Phoenix fans. Even the tweener fans who came to see Jack’s Mannequin or the club folk who came to see Passion Pit (the other bands who opened the show) were in love with this band. Check out the setlist below (incomplete, don’t bug us about it unless you know the songs) and some pics and a video. (Send in your pics and we’ll give you credit and probably a free CD!)
